Sounds like a great trip.   I’ve been to Asheville several times and recently and enjoyed each.  Great hiking, breweries, restaurants, artwork, restaurants, etc.   Nashville is fun but can be busy with bachelorette parties, etc.  Still always great music somewhere!

It was my first trip to both places. The hiking options in Asheville are incredible. The only place I’ve ever been to rival it for breweries is Portland. Unfortunately , my beer drinking days are over, but my kids made up for that.

I have always considered Nashville a place of  bachelorette parties and country music, not that I dislike country music. There is much more to do there.

100%.  People are genuinely nice.  Neighbors WANT to help each other.

I feel like race relations are way better in South than they are anywhere else too.   I don’t know how to articulate it, it’s just a feeling of normalcy there as there seems to be less segregation than on the west coast   I go to the bar in rural SC and chances are it’s 50/50 black / white   On the west coast, you stay on your side of the town   That’s my experience at least.   I’m sure there are pockets of extremists here and there, but it appeared the normal people were more accustomed to not being segregated there than anywhere else I’ve spent time

Yes, and unfortunately those pockets get all the attention.

Not to β€œharsh” anyone’s buzz, but here is my take on Asheville. We visited a few times and bought a lot in a nice subdivision there and engaged a builder. The reality of that city is the local government has decided that the β€œrights” of the mentally ill and drug addicted to be on every corner panhandling and harassing citizens supersedes the rights of taxpayers.

We rethought our decision and decided on suburban Raleigh. We thank our lucky stars every day.

So, panhandling was your major concern?  Mentally ill and drug addicted on every corner.  It must have changed since I was last there but I was also unable to diagnose mentally ill and those with drug addictions.

@Packy I failed to mention the crime that goes along with that cohort. While I am no clinician nor rocket scientist, I gather you don’t agree with my statement about the folks at most intersections being mentally ill or drug addicted. What would your diagnosis be? Quirky? Starving artists? Misunderstood millennials?

I didn’t see a single panhandler in Asheville. Lots of them in Nashville.

Edit: Wifey just reminded me of the guy by the airport.

Just seemed like without knowing each situation that you were throwing them all into a negative group.  Many could be homeless without any mental illness or drug addiction.  Until you know, you don’t know.

But I didn’t mention homeless people. I mentioned people that I presumed to be mentally ill or drug addicted.  The reason I presumed it is because that is a fact. Are you saying that is an incorrect assumption? We have a huge homeless problem in this country mostly driven by mental illness and drug addiction. Take those two factors out and the problem is more than halved.

I was supposed to go with friends to a U2 concert in Philly a couple of years ago.  We backed out because of other priorities and I was experiencing FOMO until one of my friends said it was one of the worst concerts he had ever been to.  Turned into a quasi political rally just as much as a concert.  I like their music, especially the early stuff, and I pay to be entertained, not to be lectured.

That's like going to Taco Bell and being surprised when you get the shits.
