NFC coaches breakfast

@TomSilverstein
MM on training camp: We'll have less night practices and more morning practices. We'll change some things.

@TomSilverstein
MM: I felt like we were a little stressed in camp last year. Off-season schedule plays a part in it, too.

@TomSilverstein
MM: We're looking at sleep patterns with night and day practices. You have to look at all factors. It will be different this year.

@TomSilverstein
MM: We went to in-season schedule midway through, but it was middle of camp had issues. More no-huddle, more stress on the legs, injuries.

@TomSilverstein
MM: One thing bothered me in SF was when they hit big plays, they got us on our heels and we didn't get back on the ball of their feet.

@TomSilverstein
MM: QB scrambles were huge plays. Talk on headsets were rush plans on third downs because of scrambles. Not as much read-option.

@TomSilverstein
MM: Confidence wasn't there on defense. Did you play with enough vision to football? Never countered the big play production.

‏@TomSilverstein
MM: Can't have the same player on the dive and the pitch every play in the read-option. That's part of what we're studying in the off-season

@TomSilverstein
MM: Each coach is giving his recommendation for their ideas for change and that is the process of coming up with defensive plan next year.

@TomSilverstein
MM: Feel the 3-4 has a lot of flexibility. When you play defense to compliment our offense, you're going to have nickel on the field a lot.

@TomSilverstein
MM: We weren't regimented enough against read-option vs. SF. The way we practiced last part wasn't conducive to hunkering down (injuries).

‏@TomSilverstein
MM on injuries: It doesn't add up right now.

@TomSilverstein
MM: Went to Texas A&M for lesson on read-option. It was great, great for camaraderie and talking football among staff.

@TomSilverstein
MM: Great opportunity to do that. Ton of feedback at Texas A&M. I'm sure there will be some things we learned from that. Spent one day.

@TomSilverstein
MM: Only the defensive staff went to Texas A&M. McCarthy did not go. Left at night and returned the next day.

@TomSilverstein
MM: If Jordy, James and Randall can stay healthy, we've got some young guys we like, too.

@TomSilverstein
MM: Contract issues with Rodgers and Matthews are at forefront of organization, But that's not my focus. I'm confident TT will get that done

@TomSilverstein
MM on safety spot: Nick was a great player. I don't know if Ted will ever get over that one. Talk about a guy in the middle of a HOF career.

‏@TomSilverstein
MM: Morgan Burnett has to cash in on opportunities around the ball. He was very productive down at the line of scrimmage. Like young guys.

@TomSilverstein
MM: Will be some schematic changes in the run game. Made some changes, but running backs have to get better. Simple as that. Blocking, too.

@TomSilverstein
MM: Changes will play to the strengths we have. Wish we had DuJuan earlier. Couldn't just put him in there, lost of stress on backs.

@TomSilverstein
MM: Felt great with DuJuan in the backfield. He's going to play for us next year.

@TomSilverstein
MM: We've expanded our running game. Have to watch ourself that we don't do too much. Have concepts but variations have to adapt to team.

@TomSilverstein
MM: Part need to improve is when you just line up and run, not when Rodgers has options to call run or pass.

@TomSilverstein
MM: Would like to get into a 1-2 punch with the backs. It really helps if you can keep doing it with same guys. Starks, Green weren't 100%

@TomSilverstein
MM: Expect B.J. Coleman to push for the backup QB job. "He has to." Wish he was here now training. We'll go full bore when he's back."

@RobDemovsky
MM: "The game of football is safer today than it ever has been. ... Still have to teach taking the head out of the game."

@RobDemovsky
MM on Crosby: "Competition's good. Don't think you can look past any performance and not think competition will help."

@jasonjwilde
McCarthy: "Adrian Peterson and the San Francisco games are our two black eyes. We have to play better defense in big games."

McCarthy on Rodgers: "I understand where he is (on the pay scale). I look at Aaron as the centerpiece of what I've tried to accomplish.

@TomSilverstein
MM on Tramon W: "We need to get on the same page with him (in regard to injury). But he's a pro. Injuries are part of the game."

@RobDemovsky
MM on OL: "Marshall played OK. We need some improvement from the left side and the center position."

@RobDemovsky
MM: "Bulaga/Barclay with Josh on the right side was a good combination. We've got to get the left side better."

@TomSilverstein
MM on OLB: Ask who biggest surprise is and you have to say Dezman Moses. He played a lot of football for us. Feel very good about him.

@TomSilverstein
MM on OLB: We're confident he'll continue to progress at the position.

@RobDemovsky
MM on Jeremy Ross:Would have been great to have those guys earlier in training camp. We put him out there in some big games. Never done that

@jasonjwilde
McCarthy: "When I look at DuJuan Harris and Jeremy Ross, I wish we had them in training camp."

RobDemovsky
MM on Ross: That fumbled punt was a huge momentum swing. To lose a series in that first half, that was obviously a big play.

@TomSilverstein
MM: Talk about a leap of faith putting Jeremy Ross out there. You have to make tough decisions like that."

@jasonjwilde
Still more McCarthy on @J_Ross_10: "He's going to get another chance. That's all I can tell you."

@RobDemovsky
MM on Nick Perry: "A guy who didn't know if he was going to be an OLB or a DE. ... He'll be better prepared this year."

@TomSilverstein
MM on NIck Perry's wrist: I've been told he'll be fine. He'll be ready to go.

@jasonjwilde 48s
Says @BBulaga hopefully will be ready for April 15.
@TomSilverstein
MM on TEs: like to have two in-line type bodies. Expect Quarless to come back. He looks great. Maybe adding another bigger-body guy.

@jasonjwilde
McCarthy with high praise for Jarrett Boykin. "He's a good football player." Glad he ran poorly at #NFLCombine and was available to them.

@RobDemovsky
MM: "Coaching staff will finish evaluations this week and then have two weeks off. Get back in April, will be cranking as a staff."

@jasonjwilde
McCarthy on @mneal96: "Mike has a unique skill set. I think we could do a better job of taking advantage of those things."

@jasonjwilde
More McCarthy on @mneal96: "I look for Mike to have a little bit bigger role this year."

@RobDemovsky
MM: "Davon House had surgery."

@TomSilverstein
MM: First three weeks of training camp Davon House probably was the best cornerback we had. Surgery went well on shoulder.

@RobDemovsky
MM on whether Woodson could return: "I haven't been part of that conversation."

The left side needs to get better and that can come from many options:

1) Newhouse improves
2) Sherrod is ready
3) New player in FA
4) New player in draft
5) Datko surprises
6) Bulaga moves over

I'm guessing 1,2, 4 are the best bets for 2013
I know the options are there but do they believe in those options? A lot of questions surrounding Sherrod. We don't even have a good sample to his play in the first place coupled with a ****ty injury. Add in Buluga is also coming off an injury, one that could be a nuisance for the rest of his career and the overall health and ability of the tackle position is somewhat of a question mark.

Hopefully there are some pleasant surprises this Spring but it wouldn't surprise me to see a tackle drafted early if the value is there.
It wasn't just LT... he mentioned Center in the same comment.

MM on OL: "Marshall played OK. We need some improvement from the left side and the center position."

The two OL spots most fans noted at the end of the season as needing help. I don't see help at either of those spots in FA so it will existing development or draft.

The Center comment is in line with what he said this morning.

‏@jasonjwilde
McCarthy on EDS: "He had segments of games where he didn't play as well as he should've. But overall work was something we can build on."

Center goes without saying. I'm just wondering if TT sees a prospect at tackle drop to him he may see it as much of a need as Center. Basically, I wonder if it's more of a concern than fans make it, including myself.
RE: Learning and adapting...

@jasonjwilde
McCarthy says that even though he liked night practices, he's looked at sleep studies and how people perform in morning, afternoon, etc.

‏@TomSilverstein
MM: We're looking at sleep patterns with night and day practices. You have to look at all factors. It will be different this year.

@RobDemovsky
McCarthy said players had trouble winding down after night practices. "The ice cream at St. Norbert didn't help, either."

@jasonjwilde
... "Or the late-night pizza."

@RobDemovsky
MM: Right in the middle of training camp we had some injuries. We have to look at everything.
‏@RapSheet5m
The Jim Schwartz challenge flag rule has also passed, I'm told.

The "crown of the helmet" rule for offensive players is going to be an unmitigated mess in 2013. The refs are still trying to figure out the "defenseless receiver" rule.

‏@richeisen5m
I'd feel a whole lot better about these safety-related helmet penalties if they were reviewable. Need to pay heed to in-game competition too

I agree with this. As long as the review process was improved first.

also said that the right side with Bulaga/ Barclay along with sitton was strong.
He didn'nt say anything about a drop off once Barclay was put in when Bulaga went out.

I've got the feeling that MM's starting tackles will be Bulaga(Left) and Barclay(right) if he gets his wish and it all works out.

I can live with this as it would mean that Newhouse is the backup for both.

not often you have a backup that was actually a "seviceable" starter.

count me as one that thinks Barclay will end up stabilizing the RT spot for the next few years...

somehow reminds me of Tauscher...

I think your answer is just a bit further down, Dave.

Also adds a perspective to the Jackson coming to GB speculations.
Also puzzled by the comments on T Will; I'll never understand how players and the team/doctors wouldn't be "on the same page" concerning an injury.

Good news about Quarless if he indeed "looks great".

LMAO, I'cheese, but your point is well-taken. If Flynn's time here doesn't inspire every QB in a backup role in GB, there's something wrong. And there's plenty of the same history before Flynn, too.

All the talk about left side of OL is being directed at Campen, I hope. We've got some players; let's get something out of them.
I'm also not opposed to targeting a T in the draft, but the trend has been to draft guys who can play multiple positions. I'd much rather get a T-specific player, but if it's a relatively high pick, I couldn't see another year of Sherrod on IR.
In addition, I'd like to read between the lines of MM's comments on Center/EDS. I would think he would be better prepared to play C this year, but is he going to be good enough?
