And here is the reality of the new deal from the Chargers point of view

"There is a catch, however.

If a team lowers the bar for blackouts, the number is fixed for the season. Whenever the team clears the mark, it will be required to share much more ticket revenue than usual with other teams in the league. It’s that part of the new rules that the Chargers believe would be too high a price to pay, said A.G. Spanos, the team’s executive vice president and chief executive officer."

"And even if you went to 15 percent lower, hypothetically an 85 percent manifest, that doesn't necessarily guarantee you a lift of the blackout for every game," Spanos said Monday. “It's also important to understand that the manifest is set for the year for every game, whether it's a big game for us or a game with a less attractive opponent.

"It's not a flexible policy. It's not a flexible manifest."

In order to get the blackout lifted for a "dog" opponent, they have to be willing to give up the added revenue from the popular opponents

More window dressing from the NFL...but thankfully they moved the afternoon games back 10 minutes so they can jam in a few more commercials

Maybe the other reason might be... could there be alot of transplants from other cities in San Diego that root for other teams like the Cowboys, Giants, Packers, etc.?

I must say, those Chargers teams of the late '70s/early '80s, I was equally in love with those teams as I was with the Packers (I was in early grade school during those years). Once they traded John Jefferson to the Packers, I think that really cemented me as a Packer fan and my Charger bandwagon fandom faded gradually. By 1984 or so, I was completely a Packer fan and didn't even think of the Chargers at all.
