Here's an interesting read from SI.com:

Talks about the evolution of offenses- using much more up tempo & spread and how some defenses have reacted to it by playing more man coverage and less zone.

That's where Shields and Tramon should provide an advantage, but the slower- than- molasses LBs are a huge weakness in man coverage that teams are happy to exploit

"There are other reasons man coverage works in today’s NFL, such as tempo. Offenses are playing faster from snap to snap, on the logic that more plays equals more chances to score (and more chances to establish a game-controlling rhythm and wear down the defense). With less time between snaps, defenses aren’t able to coordinate their spacing and assignments in zone. So they just line up and say, “I’ve got him, you’ve got that guy.” Offenses will keep playing fast because it’s also a great way to simplify things for the quarterback. A defense that doesn’t have enough time to coordinate spacing and assignments also doesn’t have enough time to organize blitzes or feigned pressure packages."

The amount of time between plays for a defense to make the calls & adjustments has been drastically reduced and Chip Kelly among others, uses this tactic to hog-tie the defense. They have to default to a basic coverage due to time limitations and the default defense is what they wanted to face all along.

Cat and mouse continues in the NFL and its cool to watch all the large-brained chess pieces react.

When GB went man vs SF, Kap killed them on scrambles because we just don't have the athleticism on defense. (yet)

Nice analysis.  The questions will be, what can Defenses do to counteract the up-tempo play?  Do we see more "fake" injuries?  Will defense players become injured more frequently, since they are playing more snaps?  Will the NFL mandate a specified time to allow defensive changes?  Or will there be a new scheme to account for athleticism on offense?

Line changes, like hockey.  Or players are allowed to rotate in after a stoppage in play like basketball.

I think George Carlin said that all 45 players should be on the field at the same time!

It use to be fans of teams that successfully ran 2 minute offence asked why weren't their teams running that offence all the times. I guess the answer was the fan were smarter then the head coach.  Head coach are a conservative bunch.

My guess is linebackers will need to get faster(and smaller) that the safety position is becoming more important.

Here's another great read on defense; this time its from Grantland and talks about Pete Carroll's defensive philosophies. Cool info on some of the hybrid defenses that use both 1- gap and 2 -gap techniques on the same play

When he's coaching Hawaii in 5 years after Cam Chancellor, Earl Thomas and Bobby Wagner left for richer free agent pastures everyone in Seattle will wonder why they ever trusted a filthy ass turncoat like Pete Carroll.

Pete can coach defense. But like most good ones. He needs the horses in the middle with smarts, range, and hot nasty speed.
