It's it possible to acquire a competent ILB in this draft?

If it is possible to acquire a competent ILB in this draft, can we please have TWO!!!

I'm sure it's possible, but doesn't TT have a poor record drafting ILB?

Perryman's now out with an abdominal strain, sounds like a potential first-rounder for Green Bay. TT's first round record, sans Rodgers, is rather spotty.

No complaints of Rodgers, but the rest?

Hawk: Waste of space.

Raji: One good year, a coach-killing tease the rest.

CM3: is a stud, when healthy. He;s not the most durable fellow though.

Bustin: 'Nuf said.

HaHa: Way too early to say either way.

D.Jones: Not very durable and, at best, inconsistent, though deserves another year before "final" judgement.

Perry: More time in the tub than being productive. He flashes once in a while but can't be counted on for anything of substance or consistency.

Sherrod: Maybe injury was the whole story, but contributed nothing really.

Bulaga: Another good player, when healthy, which hasn'r been often enough lately.

 

IF Matthews and Bulaga were durable, it would go a long way in making TT's first-rounders look much better.  

 

Only 30% truly deserve to be starters on a good team, and two of those are somewhat brittle.  We'll see in a couple of years if Dix (I'd bet yes) and Jones (I hope) are added to the group.

Wait unitl the Wisconsin and Iowa alumni start suggesting TT should draft Badgers and Hawkeyes respectively.

I actually really like Carl Davis. Great hustle and great size. Looks pretty raw right now though, but man with that kind of size he could play anywhere on the DL. His battle against Linsley in 2013 was pretty good.

Yeah, I'd have no complaints about Davis, at least until the conference championship game when he's inflicted with dum like the rest of the former Iowa players (though I'm inclined to cut Bulaga some slack for his penalties).

How anybody can question Clay Matthews' draft value, especially given the modalities of how TT moved to get him, is beyond me.

 

This is a beyond stupid statement. The 2014 Packers went 12-4 and just played for the NFCC and of the 10 (1st rounders) player listed, 5 are starters and 2 others are significant contributors. But yes, Only 30% truly deserve to be starters on a good team because the 2014 Packers are not a good team.

 

 

Hawk is not a starter, Jones is rather pushing it.

 

Matthews is a difference maker when he's on the field. It's too bad they can't "LT Fuel" him with cortisone and cocaine to keep him there.

Yeah we are super off topic. No one thinks TT is without faults. The thing some fans forget is that every GM has busts on their resume, every GM has crappy players, every team has gaps that the GM failed on. Packer fans are lucky because we have a GM who has more successes than failures and keeps his team stocked with talent every year. Don't confuse fans being greatful to have a GM as competent as Thompson for fans being nuthuggers or whatever you called. Being overly critical and nitpicking isnt the same as being realistic.

Interesting parallel, however, in that Ted really makes hay in rounds 2 - 5 or so.  Wolf was sort of the same way.  Decent record on first-rounders, but likely because he was always picking late there were some busts there too.  Wolf was absolute money from rounds 3-5 or so.

 

Just draft all Wisconsin guys and get 'er done.

Does Wisconsin have a football team? That's great for them!

With the rookie pool/cap, it really doesn't matter where a player was picked. Just show up on Sunday and play like you mean it.

 

 

Thompson's a good GM, I don't see anyone saying otherwise, but the major reason for that is his post-first-round work and Rodgers. Buddy Nix wasn't far off when he said 'the difference between a genious and an idiot GM is finding a franchise QB'. Let's face it, Rodgers covers a lot of warts on this team, just like Brady, Brees, Luck, etc. often do.

Now if Mike Sherman had drafted the same players then 70% would be starters on any team.

However, he did have a very good 2014 draft IMO.

 

The last few years were not as impressive, but 2014 was solid.   He still has a massive problem drafting DL/OL with any kind of consistency.

Datone Jones, Eddie Lacy, David Bakhtiari, JC Tretter, Micah Hyde, Josh Boyd

Pretty average draft honestly.  But nothing like this past season.

 

Jones has been a whiff.  Lacy obviously is a beast.  Bakhtiari is a decent LT.. nice pick up for where he was selected.  The other guys have performed well in spots and help shore up the depth for sure.

Still a year early to make any "final" grades, IMO, but Lacy's been mostly nails and Bakhtiari despite his limitations has held up as well as could be hoped. Hopefully Jones will find some consistency and better availability in the coming season and Boyd continues to develop in to a solid role player.

I like Stephone Anthony from Clemson and Amarlo Herrera from Georgia in the third round range, which is probably more where TT would grab one.

 

The guy I really like is Eric Kendricks from UCLA, but I think TT would have to trade to get in a good spot to get him. He covers a crap ton of ground and is good in coverage too.

Kendricks, McKinney, Perryman. 

 

Gladly take either of them at ILB in RD 1. Instant upgrade. 

 

2015 is a very good year to need ILB's. 

The thing we need in an ILB is not just a big guy or a fast guy, it's someone who has the instincts and awareness to get to the ball quickly. Hawk can track the ball, but he has very poor instincts and reacts very slowly. The reason I like Perryman is that he not only is athletic enough to cover a lot of ground, he has great instincts and a great ability to shed OL and take on the ball carrier immediately. He's also very aggressive though sometimes he's over-aggressive and misses tackles because of it. To me he just looks like a very natural football player rather than just a great physical specimen. Des Bishop was not an incredible specimen, but he had a natural feel for the game and had great instincts. I will take a instinctive football player like Bishop, even if they're phsycial measurements aren't impressive, over an elite athlete like Hawk (or at least was) who doesn't have those same instincts every day.

People have gotten really focused on the defense again but when looking at the team as a whole the biggest need area just might be offensive tackle.  The Packers played there with virtually no depth this season.  Tretter was completely overmatched when he stepped in at tackle and I don't see the Packer's trying that again.  Barclay will be back but he's coming off an injury.  The Bulaga situation will have a huge impact on how Thompson approaches this draft.  The Packers will probably take a tackle within the first three rounds regardless because of the lack of depth at the position.  If Bulaga is not resigned, I think it becomes the team's top need.  I can see Thompson being content with resigning either Guion or Raji and picking up some backup at NG off the scrap heap.  They might even try Boyd there just as a backup/rotational player.  Ted could live with Matthews and Barrington at ILB.  But having to choose from Tretter and Barclay to be a starting right tackle?  I don't see it.  If Bulaga leaves then offensive tackle is the team's top need.

I wouldn't exclude OLB by any means either as a high priority. I don't trust Perry will ever live up to his 1st round billing. There is no telling how effective Joe-luis will be assuming he's back in 2015. Mike Neal is just hit and miss.

 

And while I loved CMIII's production the 2nd half of this season, he also disappeared the 1st half of 2015 then bailed out of what was arguably the 2nd most important games of his career the final 2 series of the NFCC.

 

I like the DL a lot going into 2015 (assuming Raji and Guionn split duties and are back).

 

But another young pass rushing 3-4 OLB running to the QB with his hair on fire? Sign me up.

 

 

I love Missouri DE Markus Golden as a 34 OLB in tbis D. He will go in r1 or r2, but he would be a solid boost to the pass rush.
