That's just nuts.

Shohei Otani's average salary will be higher than 8 teams current payroll.

Actually it won't be.  According to ESPN most of the money is deferred so the Dodgers can keep signing high level guys and not exceed the luxury tax too much.

The deal does not include any opt-outs, a source told ESPN. Another source said the "majority" of Ohtani's salary will be deferred in order to mitigate what the Dodgers are charged toward their competitive balance tax payroll on a yearly basis, giving them more freedom to add players over the life of Ohtani's contract. Those deferrals, according to the source, were Ohtani's idea.

Is it bad that all of a sudden I hope he gets hurt and the dodgers are stuck laying a boatload of coin for nothing?

I don’treally hope he gets hurt on a personal level.  Just to stick it to the Dodgers.

1.2 billion in guaranteed money for Betts, Freeman, and Ohtani.

They didn't need Ohtani as badly as they need pitching, and Ohtani isn't going to pitch until 2025.

As of now, their depth chart shows their 5 starting pitchers are Walker Buehler (coming off Tommy John Surgery), Bobby Miller (3.76 ERA), Ryan Yarbrough (4.89), Emmett Sheehan (4.92), Ryan Pepiot (has potential but has played in 13 MLB games). They need about 3 starting pitchers.

Now the Corbin Burnes trade can happen.

MLB should not allow that. It is 10/700 and should count as $70 million per year for the luxury tax purpose.

And it sounds as if the Dodgers were bidding against themselves.

The Dodgers aren't as crazy as you think, when health he is the best player in baseball, will sell tons of jerseys and tickets and elevate the brand.  The only risk for them is injury that takes him out for long periods of time

And yes, take everything you can for Burnes

Didn’t the Brewers defer money with the Yelich extension?   Granted, the contracts aren’t comparable but I’m surprised more teams don’t do this.

The rich get richer, that’s for damn sure.  The Toronto rumors made no sense and he was already in the LA market where he should be able to rake in some major sponsorship and marketing deals.

As for Burnes, it sure seems like there’s a lot of Dodgers speculation so we’ll see how that plays out.  He’s a California guy so LA wouldn’t seem like an odd landing spot plus the Dodgers need pitching.

Ohtani is deferring more than 97% of his earnings. The deferred money -- totaling $680 million -- will be paid to Ohtani between 2034 and 2043. Ohtani is believed to make upward of $45 million annually through endorsements. Ohtani's cost toward the Dodgers' competitive balance tax payroll -- which typically uses the average annual value of contracts, in this case $70 million, but discounts deferred money -- will be about $46 million after each season. That puts the combined cost of Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts toward the CBT payroll at somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 million annually. The luxury tax threshold sits at $237 million in 2024.

Yeah that’s a bit suspect if you ask me but it’s such an MLB type situation to completely screw up or cover up.

Steroids and PEDs, service time manipulations,  no hard salary cap, a commissioner that everyone basically hates and now this gambling issue.

Nothing to see here!!
