Justin is jousting with KC on his long- term deal and I wondered how good he'd look in a Green & Gold uniform

(That's the beauty of living in the clouds  )

Need: Packers need to replace Peppers in 2016. And Nick Perry will either get back-up money or be gone in 2016

Neal isn't the answer and Hubbard/Mulumba/Elliot are fine depth, but not front line starters

So, GB will definitely need to invest in an OLB or two

And the good ones are often gone by the time GB drafts, especially over the next 3-4 years GB when the Packers will be a bottom five drafter

Cash - GB is sitting on $16+ million and the offense is all signed through the end 2016. On top of that the cap will go up at least another $7-9 million a year for the next 3-4 seasons. Perhaps there's a way to structure it so it doesn't kill your carefully crafted balance sheet

Draft picks: Gotta give up (2) firsts, but at least one of them would have been spent on an OLB anyways

Packers 1st rounders are at as low a value as they're ever going to be....# 30 this year, #32, next

In 2015, most say the first tier is over after 20 picks, meaning GB will get a 2nd tier player for their first rounder. Likely the same in 2016

And, the deal doesn't have to happen until after the 2015 draft.

That way both GB and KC can draft in 2015 knowing that their needs at OLB are about to dramatically change.

Maybe KC gets the Packers 2016 and 2017 1st rounders.

Either way, KC is totally cash- strapped in 2015, they don't even have enough to sign draft picks right now.

This only works if Justin Houston truly wants out, and he has said as much back in March. Was he just negotiating ? No clue.

But if he wants out, I don't see how either the cash or the draft picks would truly stop the Packers from acquiring a book-end OLB...and it sure would be fun to watch on Sundays. Will it happen ? Very unlikely, but I think it could unless some of the larger brains around here show me the error of my thought process.

Ha I was thinking about starting a thread with the exact same topic last week.  I'd actually be ok with this.  We've seen such low returns on late first rounders anyways (Sherrod, Perry, Jones) that 2 picks doesn't sound that bad.  And I fully expect this team to be picking in the late 20's as long as Rodgers is healthy.  TT has this team in such great cap shape that he could handle a contract like Houston's ($12m per year?).  And you're right, we likely spend a first on an OLB this year or next anyways, so it's like you're paying an additional first rounder to get an all-pro in his prime.  And if things get ugly in KC, he might be had for less than 2 first rounders.

What I don't know about Houston are the intangibles.  Is he a punk who just wants to get paid?  Is he a POS off the field?  Will he poison the locker room?  On the field, does he benefit from other players?  Are his numbers scheme related?  I don't know the answers but if that all checks out, I'd do this.

Read this and wanted to dismiss it as a silly pipe dream.

Reasons it makes sense.

GB can grab a CB and ILB in rounds 1 and 2 this year and do this deal after the draft.

The two picks GB will give up are not going to be better than 26 or later in 2016 and 2017.

Houston would be a top 10 pick if 2011 was redrafted.

GB is going to have to spend a top pick on OLB within the next 2 years to replace Peppers

its a move way outside Teds MO he pulls off every so often

Houston gets to the QB as well as anyone in the NFL

Reasons it makes no sense

Hard to tell exactly how big a POS Houston really is.

He was projected in round 1 in 2011 but smoked a bunch of weed and failed his draft drug test

His bed probably has no sheets. He can't cover anything.

He is the definition of a one trick pony. But hes really good at that trick.

They think Perry is going to make the jump at OLB at some point.

Its unlikely. But GB is never drafting a player with Houstons ability at the slots they will be picking in 2016 and 2017 and one of those picks would likely be used to take an OLB. It isn't an automatic pipe dream.

Wish I shared your optimism.  Perry is a serviceable player in Capers scheme (when healthy....) but he's really a 4-3 DE trying to play 3-4 OLB (similar to Kampman).  I think Perry leaves after this year to go play with his hand on the ground for a 4-3 team.
