Canada has a knack of being able to beat the U.S. in the Olympics. They really don't care that the U.S. beats them in the World Championships; they know everyone only remembers who wins the Olympics. That's what they shoot for. Once they got that fluke goal off the defense's knee, the U.S. kind of went, Here we go again. And they were right: There the gold medal went again... north of the border.

Couples figure skating would look like a goat wandered out onto the ice.

Just no coughing, especially in curling.  End up with a mini curling stone going the other way.  Very confusing.  HARD!! HARD!! HARD!!

Think of the family fun that would ensue if they tossed them out there naked after they were required to drink a case of beer and eat a pound of chorizo immediately before taking the ice.

That's theater.

I respect Canada for protecting their turf. It means everything to them. Watching todays game again you could see 130 years of pride on display. They wanted it like they should have.

SI had an excellent article just before the Olympics about the political situation there and how Russia keeps intruding into its neighbors' business, and how the people in the area feel about it. It's an interesting read. Agree, Chili. Sports matter.

It's amazing how much some countries spend to host the Olympics while many from those countries live in poverty.  And, many of the structures built just for the Olympics are hardly ever used again.  At least, the structures in Lake Placid are still used and kept in good shape.

Can't say the same for some other past hosts:

Interesting photos, Packy. Sarajevo was beautiful, until the war destroyed so much. The trouble with building facilities like these is that no one other than Olympic athletes or those in training can use them. The tracks for winter sliding sports would be wicked sledding runs but few moms would let their kids take that ride! So you either dismantle them (too expensive) or let them rot. I wonder what the Squaw Valley facilities look like today??
