They just play harder than we do.

Vic Ketchman believed defense just wasn't in GB's DNA.  Offense has been going all the way back to Dickey/Coffman/Lofton/Jefferson.  But no matter what they do, they are doomed never to have a dominant D save a couple meteoric seasons that won them a SB.

The defense is just one or two players away from being dominant. The problem is that those one or two players need to be guys like Reggie White and Charles Woodson. You don't usually get those guys unless you hit a grand slam on a first round pick. R. Gary is more like a hitting a solid double to the gap and Van Ness has not flashed much of anything yet.

The Packers got both White and Woodson as free agents and they are probably two of top 3 free agent signings of all time. I'd say Drew Brees is the only one you could make a debatable argument about being more valuable.

You got anything in the "not actually dealing with reality" category this morning?

The unfortunate reality is that they despite using 8 first-round picks and 5 second-round picks since 2016 on defensive players they just have not found a true impact game-changing player. They found two lower-level Pro Bowlers (Alexander and Gary), busted on a few picks (Savage, Josh Jones, Josh Jackson), and picked a few other guys that have good to elite athleticism but struggle to consistently use it in game situations (Walker, Wyatt, Van Ness, Stokes, (and Savage)). I'm optimistic that Bullard and Cooper will be solid players from this year's draft class, but it doesn't matter who the DC is and what your scheme is. Sometimes you just have to have an elite player make a play, and that hasn't happened enough on that side of the ball.

We're all too painfully aware of the defense's historical shortcomings and hope springs eternal with a new DC.  But that's hedging a lot on one unproven guy and a few assistants.  It's just the first game but I really don't know what else they can do at this point.  Gute's not going anywhere and this organization is not one to "clean house" really for any reason.

One sliver of hope I have is that, and this may be totally coincidental, considering how much better Gute's drafts have been since AR's departure, maybe just maybe we'll see better defensive talent now.  That's all I got.  That and the fact that there are 16 more games ahead.

Continuing the baseball analogy, LVN is Pedro Cerrano.
He can smash a fastball over the middle of the plate, but hasn't been able to hit the curve ball.
