Really interesting article. Apparently, things were as stale off the field as they were on the field. Team gatherings where 6-10 people would show up. As proud as Thompson and MM were of developing and keeping their own talent, inbreeding is never good.

Bunch a showboaters dancing around celebratin'. Who needs that?
The Packers lead the NFC North with a 6-1 record, and their defense ranks among the top 10 in nearly every major statistical category.
They've awoken a sleeping giant.
Aaron Jones interview at
https://www.packersnews.com/st...brothers/4049804002/:
"We're a band of brothers. You see the defense, they did their 'Remember the Titans' (move against the Raiders). If you were to look to the sidelines, offensive players were doing it as well. So it's just one big family. We're all happy for each other. We feed off each other's energy, and we all want to see each other succeed."
Lengthy piece but required reading. Pretty obvious that MM's shelf life had expired and drastic changes (both coach and GM) were necessary long before they were made.
Early returns indicate a good hire by Murphy but he was asleep at the switch earlier.
Maybe I'm reading between the lines too much, but I can see why Daniels and Mathews were allowed to walk.

I prefer, "White House, one, two, three."
My favorite part is when Pettine met with Gute and he was surprised to hear that the GM knew more of the holes in the D than the DC does. I freaking love what Gute has brought to this team and I what MLF has been doing.

I don't see many attendees.
Of course not, but it's the opportunity that counts.
Pretty telling that âteamâ get togethers over the last 2 years almost never happened and drew 6 to 8 out of 53 guys.
Interesting article, thanks for posting. I think it was Bill Parcells that said coaches have a shelf life of around 10 years. I think we saw that from MM. He really should have been fired after the 2014 meltdown in Seattle, which would have been 9 seasons as head coach.

Packers are near the bottom 10 in Rushing Defense...so far
But that may be by design ...somewhat anyway...it hasn't hurt them and they can crank up that physicality late season and into the playoffs.
It's General Patton type of strategery...bait em and then out blitzkrieg the blitzkriegers
Late Raiders patriarch Al Davis used to say that coaches have a shelf life of 10 years in one place, before their message grows stale and their voice loses its effect. When Bill Walsh left the Niners in 1988, after three titles and 10 seasons, Walsh reiterated that sentiment.
McCarthy, now at 12 years, isnât buying it.
Really interesting piece from 2017. Biggest problem appears to have been that MM was oblivious to the fact there was a problem.

Considering you can go to any drive-thru and get the same treatment.

Disagree....I'm going to go with Jan 2017 -- they got crushed by Atlanta because they had 6th & 7th string CB's trying to cover Julio Jones in the 2016 NFC Championship Game. Everyone else was hurt.
Hindsight being 20-20 and all because in 2017 when Rodgers was out & MM was like...."The QB room is FINE!" We all saw the shitshow that ensued. Then in 2018 it was even worse.
So I'm going with Jan 2017 -- final answer.
Anyway....2019 is shaping up to be a fun year. We have Gutey to thank for that by getting the Smith's & Amos, drafting Jaire & Savage -- retaining Pettine. That defense has changed the culture. I'll never forget the look on Rodgers face after game #1 - "We got a defense....(YOOOOGE smile on his face) We got a defense.'

I never bought that whole 10 year thing but after seeing the MM product that far in I think I'm a believer.
There are obvious exceptions (see New England) but not many. Guys can get away with this in college but in the pros if you are being coached by a meathead long enough you will figure out that he's a meathead.

I don't think you're reading between the lines enough lol.
Between Pettine's refreshingly honest quote about Gutey telling him he was fully aware of just how much new talent needed to be added to the defense and Gutey quickly getting rid of practically all of Ted's leftover defensive talent, I don't think it was just Daniels and Matthews who were "allowed to walk."
In addition to Matthews and Daniels, Perry, Ryan, Randall, HHCD, Brice, J. Jones, Rollins, Burnett (four first round picks) and other at least some-time starters I have thankfully forgotten are all gone from the defense that Ted left Gutey with upon his departure.
There was certainly a culture problem but there was also a talent problem on the defensive side of the ball.

At a drive-thru, after screaming into the microphone, a calm voice would reply "I am sorry, we don't have that on the menu". I doubt that happens in a team meeting.
