According to the linked article below the author assumes a CAP of $123 mil for 2012 and says the Pack are currently $29.7 mil under the CAP, if Collins is forced to retire and about $26.3 mil under if Collins returns. Dont know if those are accurate numbers however.

I know the premise of the article is how to sign Mario Williams, but that is the only info a quick search provided on where the Pack stands currently regarding the CAP for 2012. The author also thinks AR and CMIII get extended contracts in 2012 to eat up alot of that CAP space.

If those numbers are correct and we gain about $10 mil more room from letting Cliffy and DD go, that gets us about $36-40 mil in room for TT to play with in 2012.

If the CAP comes in at less than $123 mil, say $120 mil, reduce those numbers accordingly.

With that said, I think there is room for TT to find a FA or two for Defence, where thats the primary area he has really signed any FA's previously, and sign players like Finley and Wells, give extensions to AR and CMIII, and still have enough left over for draft pick signings. Again, if those numbers are accurate.

How to Get Cap Room To Sign Mario

Ted does not sit on cap money. I think he had 5.5 million at the end of the year. There were only a few team with less cap room then the pack. Teams that sit on cap money were about 30 million under the cap. This is the last year teams can sit on cap space, next year the Full CBA kicks in and teams will have to spend almost all of it. How much we will see as the CBA is explain more fully to us.
This maybe the year Ted may sign some free agents, more then 200 players as of now will be FA.

Boy, 80 million for a guy whose season ended early because of a torn pec muscle? That doesn't sound like something TT would go for at all. Who knows, maybe he'd surprise us, but that just hasn't been his method of operation in the past.
The talent level on defense is poor right now. I don't know who Ted is going to get, but he's going to bring someone on board this year. When he got Pickett and Woodson in 2006, the talent level was only a bit worse than it is now.

Woodson only played 5 games the season before he was picked up, and he had taken on the label of "injury prone" by that point. Not many "experts" thought he was worth the deal he got, either. There's no reason to keep Clifton and Driver around, and it would probably also be smart to ditch Hawk (he can play steady football when surrounded by talent, but he sucks really hard when he needs to step up). If those guys are cut, they should think long and hard about signing someone. Wells is the only guy they should re-sign, and Finley should be allowed to walk.

With the extra picks in the draft after comp picks are awarded, let's hope we get someone oppposite Clay there along with some DL depth.
Joe Johnson was 30 when he was signed and he had a rotten attitude, a typical Mike Sherman signing. He was a poor judge of character (one of Ted's strengths) and he was desperate to get someone to cover up the piss-poor talent on defense.

I wouldn't go that far, but there are certainly several gaping holes.

TT isn't going to go after Williams and some fans just need to give it a rest. I can see the possibility of a mid to lower tier FA, but his price tag and injury history rule him out.
I think Collins is going to hang it up, that's not the kind of injury you mess around with. He's got a ring, he's got great career numbers, he's a Packer HOFer...there's nothing for him to play for.

There's also a very real possibility we also see Driver and/or Clifton released before the new league year. Driver's cap number is close to 3 million and Clifton's cap number is around 5.5 million so realistically the Packers could have anywhere from 26.3 million in cap room to around 38 million depending on who stays and who goes. I'm guessing we release both leaving us with about 38 million.

If they franchise Finley that's 5.5 million and whatever it costs to re-sign Wells (I'm guessing he would have a cap number of about 7 million) and alternatively if they franchise Wells they're on the hook for 10 million plus whatever it takes to re-sign Finley (I'm guessing he would have a cap # of about 4 million). Plus we have Jarrett Bush who will command 1 or 2 million IMO, so to re-sign our own will take anywhere from 7 million to 16 million. Say we franchise Wells, re-sign Finley and Bush, that's a cap hit of 16 million give or take.

Figure we spend about 3 million on rookies, that's about what we spent in 2011.

That leaves the Packers with about 19 million to sign free agents, re-sign either Wells or Finley and re-sign Greg Jennings who is an FA in 2013.
Based on the details from http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/ ... I think these are accurate. UFA's not listed.

I would guess TJ Lang gets looked at before the end of next season too.

As for Collins, in MLB's guaranteed contracts, when a player gets hurt, insurance picks up the bill for whatever remains (Bo Jackson and Albert Belle come to mind). With Nick, will he get a little bit more money if his injury takes him out of the league? Will it cost the Packers any money and/or cap space? When he got hurt, I was glad he got the contract he did, and I hope he stored a lot of it away.
Im excited about this offseason, I think we can make some nice upgrades defensively. With 38M+ to spend potentially, it will be interesting what Uncle Ted does. I think he will have a good offseason.. holding out hope.

Although, I could see a significant chunk of that money going towards extensions for several guys on the squad now.. Nelson, Matthews, (God no.. please not Raji)...
Remaining SB for Hawk is $6.4mm... it accelerates if a player is cut.

$4mm of Woods $10.5mm is in the misc bonus category on the site I linked. Not sure if that is roster or workout...

I think they try to extend Lang this off-season. He's an UFA after 2012 and I doubt they want him testing FA or even having the contract talk lag too far into the 2012 season.

Diggr14: Raji got paid in 2010 and 2011 w/ a little over $12mm in bonus cash.
I remember hearing that this year the cap is scheduled to increase slightly, but next year it goes up dramatically. This should help them extend Raji and Lang after the season. The bigger concern is being able to extend Rodgers and CMIII this year, b/c those two are grossly underpaid right now considering where they stand against their peers (CMIII especially).

I would love to see Mario Williams here and it's definitely doable. But two problems I see: 1) TT only goes for value and it's likely that Williams' price will be too high. Not that TT thinks Williams is a bad player, but he'll probably command $12-14m a year for 6 years. Maybe TT thinks that's value, but I'd lean towards not. And 2) It's a gamble paying Williams that much money to play a position he hasn't really played before. Can Williams drop back in coverage? Is he good in space? How is he rushing from a two point stance? We have a 3 game preview of him at OLB, which just might be enough for TT. But that's just one more risk TT has to deal with.

Still, I'd love to see Williams in GB. But I'm not holding my breath.
Thanks H5.

Looking at that, it's clear Clifton and Driver have to go. Time to move on...

I don't think Hawk is a bad player. He's good enough. Yet, I don't think he's better than Smith and such his salary looks way out of line there.

If Collins retires there's even more money saved from the cap.

Matthews is considerably underpaid and needs an adjustment sooner than later. Not lost on me is how you never hear the guy bitch about his contract. He's an elite player that is getting compensated in NFL peanuts... Yet he just shows up and plays. Much respect to CMIII for how he handles himself.

Another guy due for a bump, especially if he wins the LT spot, is Newhouse.

I'm guilty of looking at the potential cap space available and translating that into Free Agency. But the reality is GB has some very talented young players, including Rodgers, that are going to command substantial contracts in the near future.
