We actually allowed fewer points and yards per game in the regular season than Super Bowl Champs Baltimore Ravens.

This team has tallant...it just has to overcome coaching in certain areas (OL and ST namely).

I'm not going to bash either one of those coaches.  ST's has not always been great but they have made some huge plays in recent years.  The fake FG against the Bears last year was a thing of beauty.  On the OL, Campen has done an OK job with what he has to work with.  With Sherrod and Bulaga out, Campen is working mainly with a bunch of undrafted guys and late picks.

Campen hasn't done much with Newhouse. Newhouse has a high intellect & fairly fast feet. He has no "punch" & his footwork is often poor. Is it cuz Newhouse could never improve or because he has a poor teacher?

The Oline hasn't been good in any of the years Campen has been there. I think it is the teacher.

The Pats have a much better oline coach. They've protected Brady much better than any line Campen has trotted out there to protect Rodgers.

I think I heard John Madden once saying that a great offensive line coach was the hardest coach to find in the NFL.  Said any team who has a great one never lets him go and they're a very rare find to begin with.

What Newhouse lacks is lateral quickness.  Defenders get around him on a regular basis.

Again, look at ANY player on the oline that is a "athletic developmental" guy.  All the TE to OL players are flops.  All the developmental guys are stagnant turds.  If Tretter becomes a baller it's truly because he is a wicked smaaart and has excelled in doing so since high school.  Datko!  This guy was low round because of injury but supposedly had all the skills.  He isn't getting completely destroyed because of injury, its because he has no technique to play at this level and gets tossed like a pair of tightie whities after a burrito eating contest.

What you have on the line is players who were straight up, consistent linemen throughout college.  Buluga, Babaganoush, Sitton, Lang, Barclay, Newhouse all 4 year starters at their position in college.  EDS.  Christ.  How many years of development and this guy defaults into the starting C position.  Can't pass block and we see Lacey had a good game against the Rams in spite of him.  Newhouse is just begging for a solid coach to tweak him up.  Truly has all the tools and intelligence and he just sits there in neutral.

You can tell the drafting philosophy for olinemen has changed.  The first couple of years it was "coach them up/potential/athletic" guys.  Hell, TT is drafting to overcome Campen's coaching.

If that OL does well (AR upright - MVP) it will be because Thompson and staff can find football players anywhere. If that OL does not do well (AR fall down go boom) it will be because Campen sucks.

My perspective is more MM being able to game plan knowing what he has at each position.  I would even go with Free Safety's take of Rodgers waiting for deep plays to develop as part of the problem.  Outside of the Houston game last year, almost every game was a matter of one olineman underperforming and a lot of scrambling.  I think the starters on the oline are good but not great by any means.  I also believe they lack for polish and coaching and could be a above average line.

We've seen with the Steelers and other good teams you can win a Superbowl even with a average to poor Oline.  I would say that is the exception, not the norm.  I do believe this team has a competent enough oline to win a championship but it needed augmentation with thugs like Mulligan and a run game with a guy like Lacey who can throw a big body as well as run or catch a pass.

To me, Campen is a generic coach going through the motions and it shows.  He's a clipboard holder with a rote style of coaching and bringing nothing unique to each individual player or their needs for development.  He's a cog.

I don't think Campen has done a poor job, but has he done a good enough job to still be here after 7 seasons? I would probably say no.

But I will say this, if he can get this year's offensive line to perform at an acceptable level, I'll give him a big slap on the back. A rookie at left tackle, a stiff at center and an undrafted free agent at right tackle. Good luck, Jimmy.

Joe Philbin cut his teeth in coaching on the OL.  When he was in GB under McCarthy he was OL coach and OC. While he was OC he was very involved in the OL coaching. Was there a coaching problem then?

Yes.  I don't think Philbin is anything special either when it comes to Oline.  He's a step above Campen, big whoop.  Philbin was more valuable to the offense as a second pair of eyes for MM.  Oline coaching has been an issue through MM's tenure.

I would also add that Philbin will benefit from Sherman as OC specifically when it comes to Oline.

I don't think Campen is a bad coach, but he's not a good coach. To me he seems like a guy who is very knowledgeable, he effectively gives his guys the information they need, and they're very prepared. What I think he lacks is that intangible coaching quality that makes the players want to give everything they have for the coach. I see that with Kevin Greene, seems to me that our OLBs would run through a brick wall for Kevin Greene...can you say that about Campen? I don't think you can. That doesn't mean he's a bad coach, I think he's an effective teacher, but I don't think he gets 110% on every player from his guys. I think our players are prepared, which is a great thing, but I'm not always convinced he's getting all he can out of them.

Every coach has holes in their game.  They may do some things superb and others just average.  It's those coaches that can take their strength and push it to a new level that win championships.  Running game is MM's "average".  It just needs to compliment the other aspects of MM's coaching style.  Overall, I'm excited to see what a true running game will bring to this offense.  That said, a lot of changes on the Oline again and striving for above average is high praise.

I agree with GD on his assessment of Campen.  I think he's a by the book teacher.  I don't think he is great at adjusting that knowledge to individual players.  He's what he is, a "meh".
