Mike Vandermause column: Mystery isn't fair to Packers fans or Aaron Rodgers

When is quarterback Aaron Rodgers going to play again?

For the past month, that’s the only question that anyone truly cares about regarding the Green Bay Packers.

Sadly, the Packers organization has done its best to give out as little information as possible about Rodgers’ broken collarbone and his playing prospects.

The Packers will argue they simply don’t know when Rodgers will return. Fair enough, but that still is no excuse for providing vague, sometimes cryptic, and rarely direct information about the injury and healing process.

Their reluctance to offer detailed updates on the status of their superstar quarterback is a disservice to Packers fans and Rodgers.

In the court of public opinion, Rodgers is taking a beating in some small but growing circles.

There have been accusations that Rodgers is soft, and that a tougher quarterback would have returned by now.

It’s a ridiculous argument given the nature of collarbone injuries, but the Packers and their tight-lipped injury reporting policies are begging any hack with Internet access to lob grenades at Rodgers with wild and unsubstantiated theories.

Here’s a novel concept the Packers should consider: full injury disclosure.

What would be the harm in providing specific details about Rodgers’ collarbone injury and his recovery progress? Instead of inviting rumors and innuendo, the Packers would control the debate with the facts.

Instead, Packers coach Mike McCarthy goes out of his way to be evasive. For example, McCarthy on Wednesday was asked about Rodgers and said: “We’ll see how he is tomorrow. We’ll set a plan for him again tomorrow.”

So at his press conference the next day, when asked if Rodgers had been medically cleared, McCarthy said: “No, he was not evaluated today. Wednesdays and Fridays.”

It doesn’t matter what day of the week it is, in the Packers’ world, the less information provided about Rodgers’ injury, the better.

McCarthy could explain specifically why Rodgers hasn’t been medically cleared but chooses to speak in generalities and leave everyone guessing.

If McCarthy is afraid to give an opponent a competitive advantage by revealing too much news, maybe he should consider how the 11-2 Seattle Seahawks handle injury reports.

Earlier this week, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll announced that cornerback Brandon Browner would be out between four and six weeks with a groin pull. But Carroll didn’t stop there. “It’s not just a pulled muscle,” Carroll said. “He has tissue damage.”

Carroll’s straightforward comments didn’t reveal any high-level secrets, and it would be a stretch to think they will contribute to a Seahawks loss down the road. Most important, Carroll’s forthright approach ended any idle speculation about the injury, something McCarthy should consider in Rodgers’ case.

The cat-and-mouse game McCarthy and Rodgers are playing with the public is almost comical.

When asked for details about Rodgers on Thursday, McCarthy replied: “The specifics of how he feels and anything he wants to share with his injury situation, those questions should be for him.”

So a few minutes later in the locker room, Rodgers was asked about the prospect of getting medical clearance, and he replied: “I think you have to talk to Mike (McCarthy) about that one. I’m not sure about that.”

That’s what you call getting the runaround. Is it any wonder Packers Nation is in a state of confusion?

Rodgers isn’t doing himself any favors with some of his evasive answers about the injury.

Here's the problem with MM's refusal to be upfront on injuries. This was tweeted tonight:

@Paulimig

RT @SchroederWBAY: : @AdamSchefter reported that @AaronRodgers12 is scheduled to have a scan on his collarbone TOMORROW.

They even hash tag this #leak.

So really if I'm MM what's the point of lying/omitting info? How many Press Conferences have we seen where MM gets obviously annoyed that a reporter has specific info on an injury (e.g. Perry has a broken foot, Cobb broke his leg)? He looks dumbfounded as to how the reporter knows this. Then you had AR visibly annoyed last Wednesday that someone inside the organization "leaked" inside info on his progress last week.

We have a story yesterday where several outlets used the term "Cats out of the Bag" and "Oops" that Andrew Quarless leaked/let it slip that AR took 1st team reps, Some even joking that might be his ticket out of the Packers or into MM's doghouse. Indeed it IS comical.

So since you have either medical staff, admin staff, or players inside the organization leaking info to the media anyway why not just disclose what you know? I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that outlets like :espnsux: likely pay their source in some way/shape for the info. By playing the game MM is, he is essentially encouraging leaks to occur and keep happening.

And that can't sit well within the organization where you have staff willing to take money or some perk or favor OR doing it to piss off MM. So indeed as Mike V points out if GB is proactive and fully discloses what they know when they know it, then they control all the info and rumors of this or that go away.

IMO it's pointless to hide this since it's getting leaked anyway and what's getting leaked is creating angst within 1265.

Vandermause described himself well , an internet hack. Actually Rodgers health is nobodies business except Rodgers.  MM owes not one word to anybody.  Who cares if fans of other teams or even Packer fans think Rodgers is soft.  I think it is great what they are doing.

I wouldn't say the Packers release of injury status/progress or the lack thereof is a disservice, it is just weird to me. Taking Rodger's injury as an example, from week to week the info coming out from the coach and the QB is almost contradictory. That said, I'd like to know what's going on with Rodgers, Cobb, Lacy, Sherrod, etc... but I don't have to know.

MM has a premium on game planning beyond most NFL coaches.  When we lose a key offensive player during the early portion of a game we have all watched as few things are changed.  Even declining to receive after winning a coin flip may build into MM's game planning fetish.  By declining if he wins the flip he can plan the same win or losing the flip.  Rarely do we see in game adjustments to opponents tendency other than during half time.

Imagine how traumatic personnel changes at the last minute must be for this highly regimented head coach.  In his twisted but thorough mind he must find a spike of excitement as he plays this shell game with the opponents.

My disclosure, one time in high school somebody spiked my mochachino with a laxative then I had to poop and went into the girl's bathroom by mistake, then 3 girls came in and I had to poop really bad and I did very loudly and they screamed and ran out then when I was done I went out the door and the whole school was there laughing at me for pooping in the girl's bathroom because I'm a guy, and then I was so traumatized that I quit school to become the commissioner of the NFL, the end.

I knew this one poster ( on another board) who totally obsessed over injury reports.

It drove him nearly insane and it irritated the schit out of everybody around him as he droned on and on incessantly about the validity of injury reports.

. Not sure what happened to that guy, but its a fair guess he ended up in an asylum where they give hourly injury updates via their new rectal delivery system. I guess they figured if his head was up his ass all the time, that was the best way to deliver the medications and the latest news on injuries.

The weird part was that this guy was absolutely smitten with the Patriots ; who are even more obtuse with their injury reports than McCarthy and the Packers.

Hell, Belichick once put every single player on his list just to screw with the mediots.

Crazy world we live in when NFL injury reports can drive a normal person insane.

I hope he gets the help he needs.

MIKE MCCARTHY WON'T SHARE THE GAME PLAN WITH ME!  THIS IS A DISSERVICE TO ME AND MY FAMILY!

Really?  People are manufacturing outrage over what MM does or doesn't say about injuries?  I swear, the older I get, the more sports fans I encounter online and on radio, the less I like sports.

Hey at least you attended math class unlike...

@WesHod

Um... RT @ilpesce85: If Packers go 9-6-1 for ROS, beat CHI, and CHI finishes 10-7, who wins NFC North?

Even for the Packers this is weird as ****.q

From yesterday...

- McCarthy says Rodgers was not evaluated today. Evaluated on Wednesdays and Fridays. Felt better than last Wednesday.

- MM on Rodgers' chances for Sunday: He's a limited practice member.

- Rodgers said he felt better after practicing this week than he did last week but still no clarity on whether he will be cleared this week.

- Rodgers, when asked if he's still hoping to play Sunday vs. DAL: "Ah ... yes."

- Rodgers on when he might be medically cleared: "I think you have to talk to Mike about that one. I’m not sure about that."

- Rodgers, asked if he'll be scanned before end of week: "I’m not sure about that, Pete. I’m not sure yet."

- Rodgers, on if return based on scan: More to it, "but I would guess there would have to be another scan for me to be on the field."

- Rodgers says decision won't go to game time. "If I’m going to play Sunday, I’m going to need to take the majority of the reps tomorrow."

@Satori, hopefully that poster has been freed of his obsession and there is safety from his demons in that asylum.

Does it really matter? All that matters is whether a player can play or not and despite the Dr. Strangelove (He'll see the big board!!) act at the MM pressers the Packers are pretty transparent about injuries. The only thing different about AR is the rather transparent and desperate attempt at intrigue. When Flynn goes under center the Cowgurlz will do the same thing kids do in sandlot baseball when the weak hitter comes up. Everybody play in.

I get that the Packers don't have any duty whatsoever to tell me or media members about injures. And I suppose I understand the logic behind concealing it. I just don't think it's very effective.

Yea the Packers should practice full disclosure, it is only right. It is not like there is some law (HIPPA) that prevents them form releasing medical information on Rodgers..

if Rodgers wants to release his medical history to the public he can.  If the Packers did they would be inviolation of the HIPPA law (medical privacy).

Too bad HIPPA can't slow down the folks leaking medical info "off the record". Ed Werder had the correct call on Monday and it wasn't from a ouija board. If anyone believes the Packers never discussed the possibilty of shutting AR down for the season if/when they are eliminated I've got some festive drinking glasses with the Vikings logo for you. Only been dropped twice

Absolutely. Bottom line is, he'll play when he's healthy enough to play and not before. That's really all anyone needs to know.

I agree VA
Yesterday Rodgers made a remark about leaks about his health. I do not think he was very happy with the leaks.
If identified the people leaking Rodgers medical information could be in serious trouble. Not jail but could loss thier jobs or be sued by Rodgers.
If the PAckers orginization was caught leaking Rodgers medical information It would be an illegal act, I wonder if  the team leaked his medial history  that could violate his contract and make his contract voidable by Rodgers?
