Highest paid LB in the NFL.

quote:
According to a source, the five-year deal makes Matthews the highest-paid linebacker in the NFL.

Matthews Tweeted: "Trivial amongst the recent tragic news, but happy to continue my career in Green Bay!"

Matthews was due to make $3.73 million in the final year of his contract, but he was expected to see a bump to somewhere around $13 million per year, which would put him in the same neighborhood as the NFL's highest-paid linebacker, Dallas' DeMarcus Ware.
Spotrac saying it is 5 years, 66 million. No other details though.

I will be interested in the guaranteed money. I'm guessing somewhere in the neighborhood of 35-38 million.

EDIT: Info came from MJS

Packers | More on Clay Matthews

Updating a previous report, the Green Bay Packers signed LB Clay Matthews to a five-year, $66 million dollar extension Wednesday, April 17.

I am very happy for CM52. He has worked hard for everything he has had and has been exemplary on the field and off. He has a shot at the HOF pending longevity.

I am, however, concerned about his recurring hamstring problems. As has been discussed ad nauseum, this training staff surely has problems.

However, I am very concerned about the upcoming season. Seeing the 2010 Arizona playoff game on TV made me realize just how much talent this team has lost without adequate replacements. THIS IS NOT AN ATTACK ON TT - he has done the best under tough circumstances (not easy to recruit top free agent talent to GB without overpaying IMHO), and a lot has to do with age and players retiring. Also picking at the bottom of each round on a consistent basis and having to mortgage a substantial portion of the salary cap for 2 players doesn't help matters.

1. Defensive line - Jolly and Jenkins.
2. Offensive line - Cliffy and Tauscher (never adequately replaced in a decade plus despite multiple high OL draftees).
3. RB - Grant played very well that season and consistently found holes in the playoff game.
4. LB - Barnett played decent, I would say better than the current AJH level. However, he was adequately replaced by Bishop who was unfortunately injured.
5. DB - Woodson was a different player back then, what a shame father time ultimately showed up. But, by far the biggest loss was that of Collins, who was seemingly in every play (pack probably don't win the SB without his pick 6). TT has more than adequately stocked the CB position IMHO.
6. Receivers - Finley a different player back then, Driver and Jennings at their peaks, etc... It's up to Cobb.

I heard that the Pack are no longer considered elite on a talent basis. I basically think they have very little chance to beat SF on opening day or any of the other quality teams if they continue to be destroyed on TOP.

So please TT, just like you stocked up on defense last year, can you please give Packers fans a legimitate OL (and protect your franchise in the process) and RB tandem this draft??? I still have visions of Ahman Green running through that powerhouse U-71 package at Lambeau in December. Seriously though, how much more challenging is it to defend RG3 because of Morris, Wilson because of Marshawn, Kap because of their OL and Gore? AR12 is in the middle of his prime years - please don't waste his talents!!

Or, will this be the year that the Pack doesn't make the playoffs and essentially becomes a rebuilding year (it will be VERY tough to win more than 10 games with that schedule)?

Thoughts.

Which part specifically?

Are you suggesting that the current Packers team can match the niners in an opening game in SF Sunday night, after their FA losses this spring? Why not be a realist?

I'm not suggesting that the game should not be played, that the outcome is decided, etc... I'm just saying that just like the Pack were favored to win every game 2 years ago, they will not be favorites at the niners this time. And the fundamental problems resulting in reduced TOP (i.e. lack of effective run defense and inability to defend running QBs, coupled with an erratic offense which is just as likely to score a td on a long drive as it is to go for a 3-and-out at times, have not been addressed IMHO).

Or maybe they have, and you have the answer... please kindly share it if you do.

All I know is that in the last 15 months or so the Packers have been beat twice by NY and Sf both, giving up yards in historic proportions each time.

That's a funny post

Which of course means the Packers have no shot to win this year.

Damn I hate it when we lose the off-season battles
It'll be nice having Perry, Bulaga, and Bishop available. Maybe Quarless and Sherrod as well. Missing FA that could have the biggest impact week 1 is Goldson.

But c'mon man. Getting twisted up over a game before the draft? Maybe we should see if both teams get through camp and the Pre-season healthy. Lot of time between today and week 1.

36-12 over the last 3 years. 2 division titles. Super Bowl Champions.

GB is plenty capable of winning the SB this year.

I agree ChilliJon - the capability/potential are there.

I am just saying that I would like OL and RB to be priorities in the draft, as well as a game-changing safety. I am just asking for positions of need to be filled.

Anything can happen - you are all correct in that respect. The muffed punt was a disaster against SF. However, the continued loss of the war in the trenches against both SF and NY is a cause for concern.

I just think that with the lack of turnovers by the offense, if GB can add a consistent rushing threat and improve the OL, the team would reverse TOP, improve scoring, and also improve defensively.
