There isn't one problem on this defense; it's a combination of injuries, lack of talent at key positions, lack of development, and poor coaching/scheming.  A performance like that on Thursday reeks of problems everywhere.

Re Neal: he's a rotation player.  It's year one of him playing OLB in space so to expect him to be a good starter right now is ridiculous.  Hell, the guy didn't even play DE in college; he was a DT.  He played well behind CMIII and Perry as a situational pass rusher but just hasn't been able to be consistent yet.  It'll take more than 1 offseason to transition.

Re Hawk: I've piled on him and I'm going to keep doing it.  I like him and want him to succeed so bad.  He's available and a great lockerroom guy.  But he's just not any good.  We can blame the OL or Capers or whatever but the missed tackle on Ross on the third and short was it for me.  There is no defending that play; that was 100% on him.  Capers called the right play and the other ten guys executed perfectly, putting Hawk in position for an easy tackle on a street FA WR to bring up 4th down.  But no, he can't even get a hand on him, giving up a 20+ yard run in the process.  Worst thing about that play is that Hawk will trot out as the starting ILB next game like he always does.  There is no accountability on this team and that's what worries me the most.

This!  So much this!  I imagine practices where a defensive player throws out an arm tackle and the whistle is blown.

Do all the other teams practice with pads any more than the Packers do?  I don't think this is a valid excuse

Under the new agreement with the players union padded practices are at a restricted number.

-My comment is regarding tackling around the league, in general, to include the Packers.  A lot of pundits/analysts/former players have commented that tackling league wide seems to be poor, and often the reason cited is the lck of tackling during the week during the season.

-The thread topic is comparing the Packers tackling this year to previous Packer teams under this coaching staff.  Since the new CBA regarding practices took effect this season, the comparison doesn't have anything to do with the other teams in the league.

Just a personal observation, PLVA, is I agree with this general assessment.

Since the new rules regarding practices took effect, I think we've seen sloppier play from all players, just not defensive ones. It also looks to me as if it takes most teams longer to 'gel'; that is, they don't look ready to go at the end of preseason.

However, regarding the second paragraph that I quoted, I thought we practiced under these same rules since 2011. Am I wrong on that?
