This is a low risk, high reward move. At worst you're getting a player comparable to CJ Wilson...good against the run, but doesn't offer much else. At best you're getting a really solid rotational player who is strong against the run and athletic enough to offer something against the pass. Trgovac will get as much as possible out of him so hopefully we will get a lot more of the latter.

Also I hope they have Merling drop some weight. He played at Clemson at around 270 and played for the Dolphins around 295. I get the sense that the athleticism he showed at Clemson and pre-draft didn't stick with him during his time in Miami. I wonder if that 25 extra pounds was the reason why.
I was also hoping the Pack could get Merling in that draft.

Now, he's got to be a better alternative at DE in a 3-4 scheme (something like 6'5" 315 lbs)like we run than some of last years back-ups at DE. Man, there's gonna be some fierce competition on our DL line to make the final 53 this year. I suspect that there will be new faces and names making the team this year.

Our D is gonna be much improved this year.
