Sounds like the exact same player as Tom Crabtree. Known more for his blocking and ST ability than his receiving skills.

I did like the reminder at the end of the article that GB has only had 2 losing seasons in 21 years!

@BobMcGinn: Matt Mulligan is exactly the kind of base-blocking, big-body TE that Mike McCarthy hasn't wanted for yrs. Start of getting bigger, tougher.

‏@BobMcGinn: Mulligan (6-4, 260) is same ht. as Crabtree but 15 lbs. heavier. Runs just 4.9. He's capable of blocking DEs at point for run game.

More in JSO article. Link

Me likey.

From the article:

Mulligan, 28, possesses the big-boned body type that has been of little interest for coach Mike McCarthy, who since Franks has collected lean, receiving-type tight ends.
Quarless. 6'4" 256.

Quote from MM regarding Quarless at the combine in February,

quote:
“In a lot of ways in his time when he played, (Andrew) is probably our most complete tight end,” Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy said during Friday's NFL Scouting Combine. “His ability to be the on line tight end, the bigger tight end, to do some of those things. I thought he really did a good job playing in the backfield. link

Doesn't mean Quarless is 100% healed and ready to go, but I wouldn't classify him as a lean receiving type of TE either. He's not afraid to take on a DE. I don't get the "type that has been of little interest to MM" from Bob. Quarless would be firmly established as the #2 guy without the injury.
Watching Alabama highlights from 2012, You notice the following:
1. Alabama runs a close version of U-71. Only difference is 2 WR's weakside, 2 TE's and no FB. They run this set a lot.
2. TE Mike Williams might have opened up as many holes as any OL at Bama. The guy can block.
3. Barrett Jones has no shot when a big DT is lined up on his nose. Kwame Geathers moved him around like a throw pillow in the SEC Championship game. Tough to watch.
4. Chance Warmack is better than advertised. That guy can get on a LB FAST and then bury him!. Fluker... run behind him, but don't depend on him to pass protect without help.

Back on point, I see Mulligan as a preemtive move by TT knowing he wanted Lacy all along and then run a version of 2 TE's with Jones, and Jordy or Cobb weakside. A slighty modified version of U-71.

You line up Finley and Mulligan together and you force a safety down out of cover two. That means either Jones or Cobb (or Jordy) is seeing single coverage.

AR is reading the S. Stay's deep it's going to Lacy (Finley HAS to block) behind Sitton and Bulaga, S moves down it's either Lacy, PA and Rodgers finds the single coverage, or Finley peels off and has single coverage against a S. Those are three pretty good options.

Would not surprise me at all to see GB run a U-71 version of smashmouth with Lacy and exploit out of that and I think Mulligan plays a big roll in that.
Add one more TE to the mix, a guy that H5 commented on earlier

Brandon Bostick 6-3 and now up to 260 and learning how to block better

http://m.packers.com/news/head...6-9e5a-581e1efd11dc/

"I know the offense. I've been in the offense for a year now," Bostick said following one of his recent offseason workouts. "I've gotten stronger. My blocking has improved, and I'm still working daily on that. I'm ready to make the leap to the 53 this year."

Mulligan, Quarless, Bostick add some beef.

But does he tweet?

I don't care if Crabtree is gone. I'm still going to watch him on Twitter. Dude's friggin' hilarious.
