I am big fan of deferring to the 2nd half. If the Packers have the momentum going in to half time they can get the ball and if SF has the momentum you get the ball and try to establish it for yourself.

Defer. Find out how Kaeperdick is going to handle the Packers D. If he gets off to a fast start then McCarthy will try for long, slow drives on offense to keep him off the field. If Kaeperdick is pressing and struggles with the Packers D, then I think McCarthy will go with a high tempo offense that tries to score quickly to get Kaeperdick in a hole. However he performs, seeing him on the field first gives a good indication about how the game is going to go.

I agree. I was glad they did it last week against the vikes, and if they have a chance, they defer again this week.

I didn't say I don't like Kaeperdick. I did think he was a product of the Pistol Offense and I didn't think he find much success in the NFL. Have I been proven wrong on either count?

Defer - for all the reasons given. It also gives the Packers a chance to quiet the crowd a bit if we can force a punt on SF's first possession.

Stats this season lean toward the defer for the Packers.

He will want the ball to start the second half, plus Kaperstink jitters starting on offence my yield a early turnover.

I would always defer. You know that the score is tied at the beginning of the game, you have no idea what it's going to be to start the second half.

What should they do if they lose the toss?

I like to see him receive the ball and go with the no huddle offense. I think if the Packers can get out in front it will force CK to throw the ball more, which could mean more mistakes. I also think the Packers defense needs as much help (points) as they can get.

You are on the road so I take the ball and hope they go down and score. IMO, you play more aggressive on the road and set the tone with the offense.

Nothing deflates a home team in situations like this than a quick score and if you are serious about your strength you set the tempo and let SF adjust.

Minnesohhhhhhhhhhhhhta scored first against GB last week, on their opening drive no less. That worked out quite well.

You're right, it only seemed that way. Packers outscored their opponents on the 1st drives for the regular season. Not opening drives, just 1st time having the ball. Also scored more on 1st drives of the 2nd half.

The last thing you want to do is let SF get on a long, established scoring drive right off the bat. That let's San Francisco take control of the game and if McCarthy is serious about what he's said recently (i.e. we play our style of game and don't worry about the opponent) then I take the ball and go on offense.

Obviously if SF wins the toss and takes the ball there's nothing you can do to change the decision but play good defense.

I think they do what they've done all year: Defer so they have an opportunity to get the ball starting the second half.

It could be argued that the Packers style of game is to defer.

This year it has been.

Niners are rested, ready and likely to pop their nut in the first 5 minutes.

Deferring has worked out well so far and MM won't change it when it's been working.

Hate those 2nd and 10's.

I don't think MM should be concerned with a detail like winning the toss. I think he should pay off the refs and let nature take it's course. Why leave these things to chance?
