Don Banks at SI opines about Mark Cubans's previous prediction that the NFL has gotten too big for its britches

The Arrogance from the owners and their minions will be their downfall...

"Where are the owners, who get to hold the shiny trophy aloft on a confetti-strewn Super Bowl stage, but beg off from taking the stage in front of the cameras and the microphones when the lights get too bright and the questions too hot to handle?"

And to add more fuel to the Arrogance file, here's a partial list of what the almighty NFL demands from potential Super Bowl hosts

And the NFL requires their demands to remain confidential so the peasants don't get a whiff of the excrement they are shoveling

a friend sent me the following and it struck as so true.  not sure about the claims about Rozelle and Tags but the rest works:

"It's called wearing something to death.  Rozelle and Tags were old school and understood how you have to keep the audience wanting more.  By giving them everything they desire the product becomes less desirable."

So will the fans fight back by hitting them in the hyper-capitalism face ?

I know the fantasy ****s can't stay away for one weekend, but maybe the regular NFL fans could pull off a boycott and deliver an empty stadium one sunday ....

I beg to differ.

Yeah, me neither.

Yup. The NFL will come out of this fine, but expect continued harsh penalties regardless of the "due process".

Greg Hardy is likely to end up on the Commish's exemption list as will McDonald.

Nothing is going to change (and the NFL is just 1 item) until there is either:

1) Washington is marched on and the suits are literally thrown out into the streets by millions of people and we start over (yes, thats right a coup). Thats the source of problems.

OR

2) The markets tank, and there is a reset to the phony BS QE/Fed/ZIRP/long-term debt/dollar debacle which would cause #1 above.

Then the hyper-capitalism/building, and phony capitalism monopolies like Jerruhs stadium monstrosity, casinos, TBTF banks and the NFL would come to a standstill.

The repercussions AND fallout would be wonderful to watch.

It's more like socialism at their level. They do  not get punished for bad ideas like we do who at the co-called "capitalism" level of society.

The stadium "experience" is a joke now. $10 (or more) for a Miller Lite? $60 pizzas? $20 Burgers? $12 hot dogs? $5 coke? Long lines at the bathroom....and oh yeah Don't forget that $250 price tag for the seat you're sitting in.

I don't get it. The NFL has definitely lost its luster for me. I'm more than happy staying home, cooking USDA Prime steaks on the grill for about $5-$8 per pound & getting the best seat in the house with great tasting micro-brewed beer for about $1 a bottle, no line to the bathroom & the ability to replay any play I want with the DVR.

I like receiving value for my dollar not giving it away for bull$hit in return.

That all being said, I'm going to Soldier Field this year on the 28th

However, I won't be buying beer or food in the stadium. If everyone would follow suit across ALL the stadiums, I assure you the vending prices would drop. Ticket prices would drop to draw you in. Parking prices would drop. Everything would drop.

It's not gasoline which you need to power your vehicle (in most cases) & get to your job. It's entertainment. And guess what?? The People have all the money & the power.

Stop going to the stadiums & watch how fast this "non-profit" organization changes their collective tune.

Yes, the government has been running roughshod over the likes of Jerry and Snyderbrenner for years.  This must be one of those great libertarian ideas you talk about.

In the context of this article in particular, this might be one the stupidest things ever stated.

Not a surprise for me.
Watching the similar graft and corruption that took place with Atlanta's bid to host the '96 Olympics was much the same.

I'm confident that any city's bid to hold any event is very similar, although it may be on a smaller scale in some cases. Baltimore hosted an F1 race that took place on a street course a couple or so years ago, that was such a boondoggle that organizers and sponsors had not paid the city more than a year after the fact.

To be honest, when I mentioned central planning, I had the league office in mind in the case of the NFL, not the government.

Although the government has been trying to get its snout into tryting to tell sports leagues how to do things.  Look at the Redskins kierfuffle for example.

You'll never find those cockroaches on Wall St(First hint of trouble and they'll be gone like the windand can function remotely) ... and a lot of those office workers are just doing their job.

But those politicians, those bastards, thos muthertrukkers ... there is a special place in h?lll for most of them. They are the enablers, they allow EVERYTHING else to occur, they sent the agenda or allow the scums' lawyers draft the laws that they'll push ...

On "Coup day" (as I like to call it), there should not be a tree in Washington left without a politician hanging from it ... and I don't care what color of skin they have. I'm unbiased when it comes to those bastards.

Its a wee bit different in that you can boycott attending on Sunday and read about it on Monday

Drop in ratings and drop in attendance will send a message in the only language they understand.

you're right though- it won't happen, but a guy can dream....

I don't know about other stadiums, but most of the vendors at Lambeau Field are volunteers working to raise money for their charity/organization.  No doubt the Packers are getting their share.  Where are these $60 pizzas, $20 burgers and $12 hotdogs located?  Haven't heard of such a thing.

From Packers.com:

CONCESSIONS

A wide variety of refreshments are available from concession booths, kiosks, and vendors throughout the stadium. Vendors will stop serving in the stands at the end of the third quarter. Most vendors and staff running the concessions at Lambeau Field are volunteers working to raise money for their favorite non-profit organization. A portion of every dollar you spend toward concessions goes to support these worthwhile local organizations.

You need to get out of the comfort of Lambeau Field sir.

Check out Levi Stadium (Niners new park) or Jerruh's stadium.

Without even looking I can guarantee you the NY Giants/Jets stadium & most likely soldier field too will be right up there.

That just makes it all the worse. League gets smokin deals on the beer, has zero labor cost and still charges $10 for a beer that cost them 33 cents. What portion do they give to charities ?  I am guessing about 3 cents because if it was anymore they'd trumpet that instead of just saying " a portion"

Checked out Levi Stadium:

Beer = $10.25

Hotdog = $6.25

Hamburger = $12.00

Nachos = $6.00

Candy = $6.00

Coke = $5.25

Pretty much in line with Lambeau.  Mind you, I think those prices are freaking ridiculous.  Every time I go to Lambeau people have a face full of food and are pounding beers left and right.  I don't see that changing....

More or less than the pink crap they sell in October?

The NFL has no problems in the short term. Too many of us grew up playing sandlot games, participating in the college football experience on campus during college, and bonding with our fathers and grandfathers watching the games. For many families, it's the main thing everyone can talk about and spend time together regardless of age, political persuasion, etc. It's also the fact that football's time slot is institutionalized. For the most part, we've watched Packer games every Sunday afternoon for as long as we've been alive. It used to be exciting to get an occasional MNF game. This year, Green Bay will play at least 5 late evening games. Not as many 8 year olds stay up until midnight to watch the games with their fathers relative to almost all that watch a Sunday afternoon game. That's especially where Cuban is right. Baseball got greedy and now most kids can't watch a World Series game without falling asleep during class the next day. It makes you more money in the short term, but at the expense of giving away the NFL's greatest single strength - the lifetime long habit of watching football during a fall Sunday afternoon and then maybe going outside afterwards and playing a pick up game with your neighborhood friends who also had just watched the game.

What will cost the NFL is when this pipeline begins to change. The concussion issue is lowering participation rates at the entry level, high schools may end up dropping football programs due to insurance issues, etc; the arrogance of Roger Goodell in dealing with the fans may have longer term effects. The fact that almost 1/3rd of this year's Packer games are not on Sunday afternoons. It's maybe 15 years away, but it's coming.

Eventually some of these corrupt, arrogant owners will have some effect. Kids under 20 are not Dallas Cowboy fans because they like Jerry Jones. They are Cowboys fans because their fathers were teenagers when Aikman, Smith, Irvin, etc. were winning Super Bowls; or because their grandfathers have watched since Tom Landry, Staubach, Too Tall Jones, Bob Lilly, etc.

If I'm football I'm worried my cash cow will eventually go the way of boxing. Quick, who is the current heavyweight champion of the world? I had to look it up. It's Wladimir Klitschko. Dempsey, Tunney, Marciano, Joe Louis, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, and even Tyson were some of the biggest sport stars in the world. Then people started seeing their idols like Ali have neurological damage. Also, the corruption and greed took over and it became too much.

A great article that sums it up pretty well.  The NFL has completely lost touch with reality all in the pursuit of the mighty dollar.  The problem now is they have to face the music with the criminal activity/element and I'm not convinced they will "get it right" which will give fans even more of a reason to look elsewhere.

My interest in the NFL has waned over the years and it's not due to the thugs but just simply what the NFL represents- they want it all and they want it now and will sell their souls and act with impunity.   When I saw the list of "demands" placed on the Super bowl hosts it blew me away.   Forget about what's fair and reasonable; the league has gone well past arrogance and greed.

Cuban was right

imo, they'd find players willing to put on the uniform and willing to play in the sandlot if they had too.

I posted this in another thread.  But perhaps it is more appropriate here too.

I hope Goodell goes away.  Over the last several years the NFL game has grown away from its roots.  He has made lots of money for his owners and himself.  In the meantime, the average football fan is getting priced out of the market.  At the stadiums, at the cash register and in front of the TV.  His administration is distorting the game by rule changes, over-enhanced technologies and de-emphasizing one side of the line of scrimmage while over-indulging the other.  Parody has diluted the competitive winning nature of the sport also.  The NFL Draft has become a side-show with hype that rivals the Academy Awards.  His rules and punishments on player violations have become a joke too.

If it wasn't for the Packers, I would rarely watch the NFL anymore.  I don't watch it much anyways now. And for that matter, college football too is heading down the same gold-paved alley-way.

Like I said, I had begun to believe the NFL would crumble and football would slide back to earth one day in the future.  But I didn't think it would begin to happen this quickly.

I agree with a lot of that.  But some of the rules changes have been to reduce player injury (or really law suits) and I don't see how any other commissioner would avoid that.  Roj has had enough to do with the changes but some of them are litigation related and unfortunately, the new comish won't be able to do a whole lot about it.  Sadly, there are elements of the game that will only devolve more.

You're obviously very fond of that posting as well you should be, but if you're going to keep reposting it can I suggest you change "parody" to "parity"? Just some friendly advice.

We had some famous parities back in the day. We'd go into towny bars and take over. Head stands on the bar. Tap Tap Olympics. Snatch the girls right out from under them. Skinny dipping if there was any water. Skinny dipping even if their wasn't. Townys didn't know what hit them.

Then there were the Island of the Crazies parities.  OMG
