Why do I feel this could a nightmare if it's passed:

The National Football League may adopt a rule that penalizes teams 15 yards when one of their players uses the N-word on the field.

While I understand the need to look at language on and off the field because these players are seen as role models, I'm not sure this is something that can be policed effectively on the field.

Imagine this: The Green Bay Packers are down by five points with five seconds to go in a playoff game against the New York Giants. It's fourth and goal from the one. Aaron Rodgers hands the ball off to Eddie Lacy, and the running back pounds the ball in for a touchdown.

But wait....

The line judge heard someone on the Packers using the N-word and throws a flag. The guilty party yelled "That's my nigga!" when Lacy scored.

It was a term of endearment toward the black running back from a white teammate, whom he hugged after the go-ahead score.

The Packers are penalized 15 yards, and the ball is placed on the 16-yard line. On the next play, Rodgers is sacked, and the Packers lose.

Do you fault the player? Pop culture? Should a white person ever use the N-word in any context? What if the player who yelled "That's my nigga!" was a black teammate? Does the ref throw a flag?

This could be hilarious! Player A scores the winning TD and celebrates with his teammates by referring to his bro as a "N" word. The refs throws the flag and gets on the mic.

"15 yard penalty and loss of TD for referring to his teammate as a nigger".

At some point, old men have to understand that society will change. That word means a whole lot less than it used to. That's a good thing, John Wooten. Stop empowering the damned word for nostalgic reasons.

It's stupid to try to govern this.

What if it is a black player to black player?

Black player to white player on same team?

On the sidelines?

The refs can't handle the rules they have and now the league wants to have some old white dude tell a black man 30 or more years younger that he can't say n*****?

Please please please can we finally get past the 1960s!  There's no reason why what was a cultural touchstone for the Boomers ought to be a touchstone for the rest of us.

“I think it’s used as a term of endearment between players, and I think it’s so much a part of pop culture and culture in general that it’s going to be very hard to eliminate that from the game,” Packers linebacker Clay Matthews told Dan Patrick on Tuesday.  “I think is more something that should come from the locker room, organization, and team leaders to remove it if they see fit.

“This is an emotional game played by tough men who obviously are a little crazy in doing so,” Matthews said.  “I think this is going to be a very fine line as far as where this stops, when you start eliminating language from play. . . .  It’ll be very difficult.”

This is probably a bit simplistic... but it seems to me that context would be the issue.  In the example with Eddie that packerboi gave earlier, that's one thing.  The context with which this whole issue is supposed to be addressing is quite another.  I'm from the North, but I've lived in the South most of my adult life, and even a country boy like me can tell the difference.  Call the bad stuff "unsportsmanlike conduct".  Same penalty, but it goes after improper intent.  Doesn't that handle it?

What Black Honkey said.

I wonder what the hand gestures will be for the refs?

Official "Racism. Number 75. 15 yards. repeat secon.... correction... Racism number 65. 15 yards. Repeat 3rd down"

Joe Buck "Well that's interesting, there is no number 75 or 65 on the field Troy"

Troy "Well your exactly right Joe. If there was it would be a shame for number 75 to have to explain why he's a racist when clearly.... he's not"

This is going to be fun.

What about other names?

5 Yarders:

Spook

Spear-chucker

Yard Ape

10 Yarders:

Jigaboo

Porch Monkey

Jungle Bunny

Spoon Lips

We haven't even gotten to the Mexicans, Italians, Jews or the gays yet.

What if you tell the ref a black joke?

AJ Hawk: Ref, did you hear about the black boy who got diarrhea?

Ref: No, AJ, I didn't, and by the way, YOU SUCK!

AJ Hawk: Yeah, I know.  Bong tells me in his letters.  Anyway, he thought he was melting!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Is that a 12-yarder?

Sooooo stupid.

Clay Matthews's view:

Packers linebacker Clay Matthews thinks it will present a challenge.

"I think it's used as a term of endearment between players, and I think it's so much a part of pop culture and culture in general that's it's going to be very hard to eliminate that from the game," Matthews said on the Dan Patrick Show. "I think is more something that should come from the locker room, organization, and team leaders to remove it if they see fit."

Matthews also pointed to the heated nature of the sport as an additional challenge when it comes to enforcement.

"This is an emotional game played by tough men who obviously are a little crazy in doing so. I think this is going to be a very fine line as far as where this stops, when you start eliminating language from play ... It'll be very difficult."
