By and large MLF is a good coach, but what is this shit telling national announcers that they "just pray" every time Carlson went out there this year. If you are going to keep your kicker, you can't say that. It's idiotic. You can still be honest and just say, "We know he's struggled a bit, but we really like his potential and how he's grown and I have 100% confidence in him if we need him." Make or miss, you really think that helps Carlson at all when he inevitably hears the quote?

It was the same type of comment about hoping his STs didn't lose a game in 2021. He has to stop doing that stuff with the announcers so he can be buddy-buddy with them.

Jason Wilde covered this on the Sunday Karma Podcast this morning at 42:34.

Wilde also talked about this topic last night on Green Bay Gamenight

He seemed to suggest Tom Rinaldi may have stepped out of bounds by reporting comments made in a production meeting that weren't meant for air. Video of Rinaldi's report from the game:

If that's the way it went down, then there's two things wrong: Rinaldi is crap because you never burn a source by reporting something that wasn't meant to be aired, and MLF shouldn't have said that to anyone except his wife or maybe his coaches, not even if he was kidding. In both cases, it's just wrong.

Regarding the failed 4th and 1, I thought the Packers got a bad spot on the 3rd down run by Jones.  I was thinking it would be 4th and inches, but when they spotted the ball, it was more like 4th and a full one.  I wonder if MLF rushed the play without realizing the crappy spot.  Admittedly I have not rewatched it, nor do I intend to, but those were my thoughts at the time.

If we're still playing "history repeats", i.e. all the Favre/AR, AR/Love, Love first year stats comparisons, beating CHI to get into the playoffs, beating DAL in the playoffs, losing to SF in the playoffs.

GB went 14 years between winning SB31 and SB45.  It'll be 14 since SB45 this coming season; SB 59.

This is exactly what I was thinking.  If we are on a once every 14 year pattern to win it , SB 59 would be ours to win. This season would be the equivalent to 1995 or 2009. An improved and up and coming team, but not quite there yet.

It might have just been a bad slip by Rinaldi. People make mistakes. Those production meetings are informal. There's no context for how MLF said it and how it came up.

According to a bio, Rinaldi has won 16 Sports Emmy Awards, 7 Edward R. Murrow Awards, 3 Associated Press Awards and a USA Today Feature-of-the-Year Award. He should more than know not to burn a source. Mistakes do happen, but if MLF said that, Rinaldi should have made it clear it was on the record. If that was a "mistake," it's the type that can lose you interviews in the future.

I swear the refs have a mental note of where the first down line is and make sure the spot is never too close to it. It's almost always clear good or clear bad. If they think the offense got it they move it up a couple inches and if they think they didn't they move it back a couple. Have to figure there's sometimes when none of them have a clear view of the ball out when the player is downed.

There were a couple clear head shots this weekend with no flag. 10 took one from Greenlaw on that sneak and there was one in the Chiefs game on the guy who fumbled it through the endzone.

Certainly, but I think we're assuming MLF prays for the kid in the sense he thinks he's horrible. It's entirely possible he prays for him in a positive sense in that he hopes he does well. MLF has seemed like a more than decent person towards everyone his entire time as Coach. I think it's much more likely he feels for the kid and wants him to do well and this whole thing is getting blown out of proportion.  It's such a quick hit down to Rinaldi no one thinks it blows up into a viral moment before it does and now it's a story that writes itself.

Fort some background Olsen and Burkhardt were on The Sports Illustrated media podcast this week and talked about what the production meetings are like

Rodgers vs Love would be the worst officiated Super Bowl of all time if it happens. NFLFU indeed.

Thoughts about the actual game... oh boy...

Very frustrating watch, as it should have been a win.

There's a lot of hate for MLF, but I like him. I think he's a better coach than Shanarat. And compared to McStoopid? Not even a contest. The clock management is pretty good (despite Greg Olsen's nonsensical rant). Seems to be a pretty good offensive mind. Despite happening upon the playoffs at 9-8 (not every 9-8 team is so lucky), it was very much an offensive rebuilding year. And that project seems pretty on track.

Not sure why Love isn't doing a little more with his legs. He's a young guy. Even Purdy took running space at the end when he had it. Rodgers in his late 30s would make more plays with his legs. And then there was the failed Love Shove... I was super happy when they ran it once earlier in the season... and then I'm not sure how many times after that we actually saw it until this game. I was always frustrated that McStoopid/Rodgers almost never ran the sneak. I want a team that can pick up 1-yard on the ground in virtually any situation. I don't think they practice it enough, and I don't think they do it enough in game.

"You gotta take the points" -- might be my least favorite sports cliche.

Joe Bury? I don't know man. I feel like this game it was more the players than the coach. I'm gonna blame Gute. Give poor Joe 11 guys with NFL athleticism who can learn and execute their assignments. That being said that last drive was brutal classic Joe. Angry Bald Man was scapegoated for far less. We've gone through multiple coordinators and sets of players and they still kind of suck in the same way. Who knows what it would have looked like if the Deebo Show wasn't canceled early.

I feel about playoff Aaron Jones the same way a lot of you felt about playoff Rodgers in the later years. I have no problem with moving on from Jones. The dropped toss was a bit of a drive killer. He made some big plays... but some of them should have been uhhh... bigger. Jones is still a solid useful player, but we need to acquire some complementary talent at the very least. Dillon ain't it, the guy filling in for Dillon doesn't seem to be it.

Doubs running out of bounds 5 yards early was pathetic.

Purdy's turd balls weren't picked. And he got a TD right after they let him get away with grounding.

I'll be cheering for Coach Caveman and the Lions next week. Hell and maybe even the Super Bowl. Let the Vikings be the sole North team with a barren trophy case. It would only be fitting.

I guess I don't particularly care if the Ravens win. I didn't have much of a problem with the Chiefs before but MVS with two rings? Mr. Pfizer and Taytay? Naw.

Positives:

I really enjoyed watching this young team grow up so fast after earlier in the season everything was going wrong.  The future is really bright for this team and I wouldn't want to play them next year now that they are more experienced and very talented.

MLF to me did an amazing job keeping things on course and getting things rolling on offense with an aggression that I really liked seeing.

OL really came together this season and they played really well against SF.

Negatives:

I usually am not one to criticize the refs but a couple of the spots were pretty bad IMHO and how in the hell do they not call intentional grounding on Purdy?

The defense wilting a the end has become a consistent theme.  I had a hunch going in to this game that was going to happen.  I hope that if they make a move they find a DC that doesn't go in to the soft shell and not playing prevent style so much

I am not that disappointed about this game because I honestly had very low expectations but I am very sick of losing to SF very sick of it and I hope the Lions take it to them

Anders Carlson is Rich Bisaccia’s long term project. Y’all are just going to have to be patient. The talent is there. Big huge leg. Rich fixed the older Carlson brother a few years ago. Can he fix Anders? We’ll see.

That's my point as well. If anything else, older Carlson can help the younger through this confidence crisis he seems to be having. And if any player needs a sports psychologist, it's a kicker. But if they play for Buffalo, they need psychologists, angels, voodoo dolls, ayahuasca, dark rooms...

I've said more than once, they need to find Jones' replacement. Only so much tread left.

I was struggling with streaming issues here in Mexico, saw some, missed most of the game.  The one play I recall that stumped me was the tush push.  I didn’t mind the call at the time but it just seemed rushed, almost time running out panic rush.

Take you your time, get lined up properly and run the play. And most importantly wait til you are sure it is a yard or less.

Carlson does have a strong leg. When he pushed that FG just to the left, I was amazed at how far that sucker traveled. It passed outside the pole only about a foot from the top and it was a 41-yarder. And that was probably the issue: he overhit it.

@Boris posted:

Bullshit.....but let's be the Vikings and just cut Carlson so he comes back in Minnesota and beats the Packers for 2 decades.

Give him competition in TC next year of course but to completely give up on the guy with that leg, disagree.

Yeah because anybody said cut him right now.  Or that kickers determine two decades worth of games.  Because nobody said that.  What's the huge big leg you people are in love with?  The one that went 4 out of 9 from 40 to 49 yards?  The one that missed 6 extra points?  The one that was 14 of 21 his senior year at Auburn?

It was a bad draft pick as of right now.  Period.  Do I hope he gets better?  Of course, he wears my favorite team's jersey.

But, as of right now, he sucks.  It's bad.

You'd think he'd be able to kick a touchback on demand...

I agree, finding someone for Jones to pass the baton to, is paramount.  I think it's worth a 3rd pick.  It still amazes me how devalued the position has become even though they touch the ball more than any other player other than QB and center.

He'd have to have excellent vision, know how to block, know how to pick up blitzes (a difficult task for most as they weren't coached how to in college), know how to catch the ball out of the backfield, know how to set up and use the zone blocking scheme MLF uses, and be fast. Plus, GB has a history of making RBs sit for at least a year to make sure they're rock solid on the skills needed, so the guy would have to be willing to learn for a year while sweating in practice. If that guy is there at 25, I still might pass on him because there's more need at OL, S, CB, and ILB. If he's still hanging around in R2, then I'd take a good, hard look at picking him.

Watch a replay of Bass's missed FG. It started out perfect then swerved to the right. I watch a lot of Bills games and a lot of his kicks do that. Almost like a slice in golf.

Crosby missed 8 his rookie year.  Carlson missed 6, all from that 41+ range.  He certainly needs work and they need to bring competition in.  Not sure he had to kick much in adverse elements either this year.
