thru first 2 games

++ Though Nelson shys away from contact, being on the outside he can avoid it. Hes easily one of the top pass catching WRs in the game and hes deadly in space.

++ Rodgers has battled frustration but has proven hes the best in the game. If he remains in 1 piece, he'll have this team humming by November

++ Daniels emerging as the force wed hoped to see

++ Crosby is simply on fire. nice to have that weapon in the kicking game (though poor onside execution)

--57 points allowed before we finished 6 quarters of play to Seattle and NYJ who arent exactly offensive juggernauts.

-- Run game cant get going , though SEA and NYJ may be the toughest run defenses we face

-- Not using Cobb as much as Id hoped

--we need a halfway competent kick returner ( use Cobb!)

-- Matthews continues to lose containment, going kamikaze towards the qb on every play.

-- was hoping Peppers would have more an an immediate impact

-- as mentioned , playcalling has been atrocious. onside kick? challenges? preparation. McCarthy certainly stuck in preseason form

-- NFC is hard to gauge. SEA and SF look vulnerable at times, but so do Saints, Falcons Lions and Bears. Watch out for Carolina. NFCN will be a 3 team slugfest

I honestly believe Clay has no idea how he is expected to be used in this defense. He's being lined up all over the place.

Can you name one great defensive front 7 player in the NFL that lines up at different spots on every snap?

I get moving him from the right side to the left. What I don't get is asking him to line up at deep ILB, stand up over the C, both hands on the ground at DE. It's madness.

You don't know where he works best until you try him somewhere else. Clay has enough star power/clout to say let the coaches know he doesn't feel comfortable at a position, if he's playing there it's because he's okay with it. Clay has been at his best when he's been able to move around and not be locked into JUST playing OLB. Also moving him around allows you to expose weaknesses that you can exploit later on...say he stunts and rushes up the middle and destroys the Guard and sacks the QB, you need to go back to that as often as possible. Clay rushing off the edge isn't going to work 100% of the time (that's true with every pass rusher) so it only makes sense to move him and maximize his value. It's the same with Peppers, move him around and find the best possible matchup. Daniels didn't move around much because he was blasting that RG almost every play.

Huh? Almost threw the game away by holding the ball too long? Either he trows it away or he holds it, right?

Maybe you yearn for the gunslinger just being a kid out there and his (estes) rocket balls.

Positives:

1. They woke up and won.

2. Nelson.

3. Davante Adams is now the #3 WR.

4. Jamari Lattimore made a case to stay in the lineup.

5. Davon House getting rewarded for superb camp/preseason.

Negatives:

1. Rodgers holds the ball way too f'n long -- run or throw it away, please.

2. Packers are soft in the trenches and that will be a problem all year.

3. Still can't defend the read-option.

4. Jarrett Bush on "special" teams.

5. McCarthy is a dope -- horrible challenge, desperate onside kick, bad red-zone plays, and settled for a FG down 21-3 at the Jets' 2-yard line.

Compers rage aside...I gotta give him credit for making in-game adjustments and getting more out of our D in the last 3Q than we saw in the 1Q.

Hawk must lead the league in helmet coming off.

Lattimore was a marked improvement over BJ.

Sherrod looked like doo-doo in 1Q...got a lot better the rest of the way. Will have his hands full vs. Detoilet though...hopefully Boo-lager will be ready to go.

watching the replay...Mike Neal seemed to have a nice game. He looks like a solid edge player, did a nice job stretching plays to the sideline and seems athletic enough to make some plays in the backfield. Packers need to be careful with lining him up on the interior cause he can be blown off the ball pretty easily.

that said, he'll probably start at NT next week.

Disagree with your A-gap dislike for CM3, if used properly with Peppers ... if can give you an idea where a QB like Geno was going to scramble to during play. Also, if Clay lines up and hits the A gap late in play clock the OLine has a lot to deal with ... especially if ol "slippery helmet Mask-boy" hits the other A gap like he TRIES to do then the Mike call for the Oline is a bit confusing.(but having someone like Mask-boy get stoned at LOS doesn't do you a bit of good)

I get that idea, just hate how Dom takes an exotic scheme and has someone like Hawk trying things he CAN NOT do AND being an important part of the scheme. Effin cripes its maddning.

Case in point ... the play where Jets TD/timeout debacle. Look what Hawk does on that play .... holy f??? man, how far of a loop outside on the blitz you going to take?

And then is so off-balance he goes down on his own. Comically and pathetically inept IMO.

Game balls ffrom yesterday.

1 for Jordy, Daniels, Crosby. All pretty obvious choices. I forgot it was Daniels that almost got to Geno but forced the floater that Tramon picked off. 97 yard TD drive followed.

4th game ball? Andy Malumba for his special teams effort. Malumba was credited with 1 tackle and left the game early with a knee injury.

Slocum'd.

Boy, Shields is really biting on double moves lately. with his speed and a little technique he should not be getting beat deep like that.

Ha Ha is lucky Geno over threw Decker on the play where he was whipped deep by Decker.   Hopefully a low pain learning experience for the rook.

Did a a nice job against the run. The Jets like to run power, CJ and Ivory are no easy task. Nice fill by the defense...must've been pure talent, lord knows it wasn't a scheme adjustment.

Plus: the team didn't quit. I thought they were done for.

Minus: as mentioned everywhere on this board, the defense. Two instances were concerning to watch.
A. Matthews in a 4-point stand near goaline. Matthews should never be in that stand.
B. At least once there were two Packer defensive linemen that rushed on the field, got in a 3 point stance and ran into each other when the ball was snapped.

Bilal Powell, lined up improperly. So Mornhinweg ran down the sideline toward Ryan making the timeout signal with his hand.

The play clock had dropped under 15 seconds, shutting off the coach-to-quarterback radio connection - per NFL rules - and Mornhinweg couldn't communicate with Geno Smith anymore. Mornhinweg tried to alert Ryan, who had switched to the defensive headset to set up in case the Jets' offense didn't convert.

But then, Mornhinweg saw that Smith had fixed things - so he stopped calling for the timeout.

"We're rolling; we're good. I didn't even get Rex's attention yet," Mornhinweg said. "That's the scenario."

Too late.... -associatedpress

Capers has often called his defenses based on what personnel the offense has on the field, but McCarthy made a somewhat surprising statement about his thoughts on playing like that.

"I'm not a big fan of matching offensive personnel, frankly," McCarthy said. "Dom and I talk about this all the time."

McCarthy then began to change his thought process.

"I'm not saying what we do is wrong," he said. "Ideally you want to match personnel, but when the offense is in a muddle-huddle type mode as the Jets are and they're doing their substitution and just the way the substitution patterns are formatted from the offense; I mean, if you're going to match, it's all about getting the players the call at the right time.

"We want to stay aggressive in our approach. We don't want to be getting calls in at the last second and things like that. Matching, there's a place for matching and there's a place to play by down and distance, and that's how football has always been played." -foxsports

++ Davante Adams stepped up

Defense held on - barely in second half

-- We really need a tight-end to step up.  Its early.  Quarles is clueless.  Perhaps Rogers will step up later in the year

other random thoughts... biggest losses on Offense  = James Jones and Finley.  Boykin has been a no-show.

Peppers?  - has he had any significant impact? I haven't noticed.

"We want to stay aggressive in our approach. We don't want to be getting calls in at the last second and things like that. Matching, there's a place for matching and there's a place to play by down and distance, and that's how football has always been played." -- Translation: Quit trying to outwit them, Dom. Just line the f*** up and let our players whip their players!

Frankly, MLBs aside, we have some pretty darn good players on the defensive side of the ball. Why not just turn them loose and quit trying to out-scheme the other guy? And frankly, MM could use a dose of that as well.

There's a fair case to move on from Capers.  The tough part is who to replace him with.  Anybody isn't a good enough answer.  If you want to remove him you have to figure out what kind of scheme best fits your roster.

The personnel on defense is so bizarre right now there's not a really good base 4-3 or 3-4 grouping.  Where they want to head in the future is completely up in the air.   If they ever want a stout run defense they need to figure out which one to pick and build it out properly.  Right now it feels like they're just plugging holes with no direction.   When MM says he wants to utilize all his guys that comes with a price.  It's hard to play cohesively when everyone is constantly shuffling in and out.

There's never been a tougher time to identify a young up and coming coach on the defensive side either.  It's difficult for any defense to look consistently good these days. It's become more about the players than the scheme.  There used to be a time when that wasn't necessarily true.   You win on defense during the draft more now than ever.

Give Sherrod two more games and he might just make it.
Datone is setting his edge and just missing some plays in the backfield. Same with Boyd.
With Guion missing camp he is playing catch up from his ass , but is seems like he is improving. With these guys getting  real game time GB  should be going from soft in the trenches especially with Bulaga and Tretter returning.
Lattimore, Dixon and Shields are in the same boat. Guys like Shields play very little in preseason so the first four games are their preseason.
Burnett I don't have a very positive attitude about him but who knows?.

I do believe this defense can become very effective , exciting and able to produce turnovers . They need a few more games to jell. Wait till Peppers and Matthews learn to feed off each other.
