Nixon making the Practice Squad? No way. Not Packer People. Think he's a crook. And if you're old enough to understand my joke, you're really an old fart!
I'll reply in the words of Nixon - "I am not a crook"

I've been reading a bit about Greg Van Roten and I think he is currently the first back-up at the Center spot
Perhaps they will train Barclay for that role as well, but if Van Roten is the 2nd string center, then he can't go on the PS...
If he can't make the squad simply as back up Center. He'll have to be good enough at at least two and probably 3 spots to make the roster. Barclay is being crossed trained because you can't be a one trick pony on the OL, unless you are a hell of a LT. Otherwise it's 2, 3 or even 4 spots. That's why Newhouse is so valuable as a backup. He can play at least 4 spots.
That certainly makes sense ATM and its likely that Van Roten can handle the guard spots too.
My question is this - right now, who is the back-up center as we enter training camp ? Van Roten is the only one of the back-ups who has played the position in an NFL game
Barclay is a pretty good bet to be the utility interior guy, but I don't think he has much experience at Center
Maybe ThIS guy is our backup center. Party on, Garth!

Interesting prospect, RW. I didn't even know he was on the roster.
His brother, who is a Viking, is Toby, and he is Garth. I wonder if his parents are fans of country music?
I think Stoneburner has potential but maybe only practice squad right now.
TE's going to be an extremely interesting competition and once you get past Finley and Quarless anything can happen.
this breakdown is extremely useful. thanks sschumer.
MM and TT have some pretty tough decisions to make, as usual.
βWe played a lot of the season with A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones,β said Dan Compers, the Packersβ defensive coordinator. βWe were fortunate, of course, when Bish went down and D.J. stepped in, and then we had to go to Brad, we thought Brad did a good job. We like his length in there. Heβs a smert guy, heβs a good communicator. So weβve got two guys in there we think are smert players that can make all the calls.β
OK, so he thinks DJ Smith was good? WTF?
If you want to tell me Jones and Hawk are better options than Bish off injury, OK, but don't try to sell me DJ Smith at one point was a better option than Brad. That guy was an epic stiff from day 1.
Where did he say Smith was good?
He made the call to start Smith over Brad Jones. One would think in his mind he was good enough to be starting in the NFL based on that.
I thought that as a possibility, but I also consider this:
Smith came in as an ILB and Jones had been (recently) converted from OLB. They had game tape of Smith in the middle but not Jones to that point. Assignment sure is so important for the ILB and it is why Hawk remains, so we've been told. I think it wasn't so much that Capers thought Smith was better as much as he knew what he had with Smith and Jones at that time was mostly an unknown for the ILB role.
