Ray Nitschke (66) levels Oakland’s Hewritt Dixon (35) on first play of Super Bowl II, setting tone for what would become Vince Lombardi’s final game with, and final championship for, Green Bay.

The two premier franchises from the pre-merger National Football League and American Football League meet this coming Sunday, as your NFC North-leading Green Bay Packers (9-4) bring a two-game winning streak into Oakland Coliseum to face their final AFC West opponent this season, the Oakland Raiders (6-7).

Next Sunday, December 20 at 3:05 PM LFT, on Fox.

This game marks the first of two consecutive western trips for the Packers, who then will have to travel to Phoenix to play the Cardinals on December 27.

It also is Green Bay's first regular season game at "the Black Hole" since 2003, when the Packers defeated Oakland 41-7 behind an inspired team performance in support of QB Brett Favre, whose father died unexpectedly on the eve of the game.

Packers vs. Raiders:

  • Regular season, all-time: 6-5
  • Preseason, all-time: 3-5
  • Postseason, all-time: 1-0
  • Streaks: The Packers have won each of the last six regular-season meetings.
  • Last meeting, regular season: Dec. 11, 2011, at Lambeau Field; Packers won, 46-16
  • These clubs first met in Super Bowl II, a Packers 33-14 victory to make Green Bay back-to-back Super Bowl champions.
  • The regular-season series started in 1972 and the Raiders won each of the first five matchups. The Packers’ first victory against the Raiders during the regular season came in 1990 and Green Bay has not lost to the Raiders since.
  • In the last six regular-season victories, the Packers have outscored the Raiders 210-70, including scoring at least 35 points in each of the last three games (41, 38, 46).

The Raiders are a dangerous team, with an up and coming quarterback in Derek Carr and perhaps the two best young players in the league at their positions in OLB/DE Khalil Mack and WR Amare Cooper. And a future first ballot Hall of Famer in the great Charles Woodson.

The Packers are in the final quarter of the season with a division championship, a playoff berth, a potential first round bye and playoffs at Lambeau firmly in their sights.

You know what you've got to do, boys.

I was flipping back and forth between the Packer game and the Raider game, and saw Vernon Davis have a critical drop with about 4 minutes left that might have helped Denver march down the field for the tying FG.

From NFL.com:

Khalil Mack unstoppable as Raiders upset host Broncos

Khalil Mack was unstoppable Sunday, piling up five sacks in leading the Oakland Raiders (6-7) to an upset 15-12 win over the Denver Broncos (10-3) at Sports Authority Field. Here's what you need to know:

1. The Raiders have themselves a superstar in Khalil Mack. The second-year linebacker abused poor Michael Schofield all day, finishing with five sacks, including a strip that led to a safety and a fourth-quarter takedown of Brock Osweiler that doomed Denver's final possession. Mack has at least two sacks in each of the past three games and 14 on the season. His five sacks tied a Raiders record held by Howie Long. Wow.

2. This game was almost laughably one-sided at halftime. The Broncos outgained the Raiders 224 to minus 12 in total yards, with Oakland's biggest play of the half just four yards. The Raiders stayed alive because the Broncos had to settle for four Brandon McManus field goals and a 12-0 lead.

3. He's unlikely to get much pub, so we'll show him love here: Raiders punter Marquette King played a huge role in Oakland stealing this game. King put five of his 10 punts inside the 20-yard line, and buried Denver inside their 5 on a possession that ended with a safety. In the fourth quarter, he boomed a game-high 55-yarder that was muffed by Emmanuel Sanders and recovered by the Raiders. Three plays later, Oakland scored the go-ahead touchdown.

4. Brock Osweiler was hit with the first loss of his career as a starter, but he was not the main culprit in the offense's disappearing act in the second half. Osweiler was under constant duress, and was let down by some bad drops from his receivers. Osweiler does deserve blame for missing a wide-open Virgil Green in the end zone in the second quarter, a misfire that acted as a four-point swing.

5. Vernon Davis has found a role in the Broncos' offense, but he picked a terrible time to have one of the worst drops of his career. On fourth-and-5 inside four minutes, Osweiler found Davis all alone over the middle for a 20-yard gain. The ball clanged off Davis' hands and the Raiders took over in Broncos territory. It would be Denver's last true scoring chance.

6. Bad timing put the Raiders in a difficult spot early in the fourth quarter. After Derek Carr hit Mychal Rivera for a touchdown to give Oakland a 15-12 lead, Jack Del Rio was forced to go for two because snapper Jon Condo was in the locker room being treated for a shoulder issue. The 2-point try failed, keeping Denver within a field goal. Brandon McManus and Sebastian Janikowski traded misses in the final period.

Cant embed this but it's bad.

When I first saw the schedule I automatically put this one down as a W.  Not so sure now because this is not the same Raiders team that we have spent the last 15 years making fun of.  They have talent everywhere and have shown they can be dangerous.  But hopefully this will be a let down game for them after going to Denver and winning.

Isn't it incredible that Woodson is still playing at a pretty high level?

Here's hoping the Pack doesn't have a let down week after their big win over Dallas. The Raiders are no team to be unprepared for. The Pack have three big games left and none are going to be easy to win, as are most games they play.

Green Bay - The following is a summary of Packers coach Mike McCarthy's Monday evening press conference:

(On Daniels re-signing) Very happy for Mike and his family. It's an exciting time. It's something well-deserved. I'm thrilled we could get it done. He deserved it. Any time you can lock up your players... I'm excited to move forward with him.
(On his progression) He's always been a buzz saw. I think he's matured in every way. Work ethic has improved. He's a bigger man than he was when he got here.
(On offense) I thought we played well offensively. Run-pass combination was good. Video was good. There's things to learn from.
(On execution and play-calling) I addressed play calling last night. Everybody has their job.
(On Clements) Tom is very involved in the game plan. Game day is same what he did last year.
(On teams being defensive minded) It has shifted. Offense can take you a long ways. Biggest stat I've looked at is how the offense plays with the defense. You need an excellent defense to win a championship.
(On Randall and Rollins) Randall played well. Rollins had a few things to clean up. Proud of both of those rookies. They graded out well.
(On defense) We tackled pretty good. You look at the fundamental breakdowns and tackling on defense was in our favor. When we stop the run, we're dropping the hammer on third downs.
(On Jayrone Elliott) Love the way he's matured. He does a lot of good things on special teams. He's playing with a veteran group. I think it's a product of that.
(On staying in pocket) I've never gone into a game and told him to scramble more or less. I'ts a product of the execution. He has the ability to play from the pocket. And the ability to extend plays. Every play has a time clock.
(On why he didn't scramble) I think defense has a little something to that. We've seen a lot of five-man rush, a lot of man-free, clearly more than we have.
(On Lacy and Starks) It's what you're looking for. Their running styles are different. Physical elements are different. You can get attempts around 40, that's where you want to be.
(On Shields) Too early to tell. He looked pretty good after the game. We'll see how he is tomorrow.
(On Charles Woodson) Charles Woodson is a generational player. What he's done is so unique. I was in Kansas City when he came into the league. He was a shutdown corner. Then look at his time here, his ability to play in the system we had first, his pressure play and run force. He was best player I've been around at the line of scrimmage. He's always on the football. That's something we have to pay attention to. Now he's playing safety. I'm not surprised he's rolling the way he's rolling. Those decisions are never easy to make (letting him go).
(On running more and playing defense) The makeup of our team is different now than it was Week 1. We need to do whatever we need to do to win. It's going to be a grind come Sunday. The game doesn't fall into categories. You get up on a team and that's it. It changes every week. That's the challenge.

Green Bay - The following is a summary of Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers' Monday evening press conference:

(Opening statement) Best thing we did yesterday was situational play was very good. We won 13 of 14 possession downs. If you look at time of possession, I think we had five three and outs. Areas we have to work on, is you can't have three long runs. The second series of the second half, they went four plays and 80 yards. We had some missed gap fits and some missed tackles. But I thought we were able to disrupt Cassel all day. We had a big interception in the red zone. Their long pass play was 19 yards. I like the way our guys responded to adversity to start the game. I thought they finished strong. WE have to go on the road and play an Oakland team coming off a big win. I like the way our guys have trended the last five games.
(On run defense) A couple of them came off a personnel group and they ran toss-crack play. They have one of the best offensive lines. What happened in those plays can easily happen. We overpursued. They cut the ball back. Those three and four plays we have to clean up.
(On rookies at CB) I have confidence in both of those guys. They've played a lot of football. They've improved as the season went along. Our plan was to match Bryant with Sam. Damarious did a good job. If you told me Bryant had one catch for 9 yards, I'd take that.
(On Mike Daniels) Starts with his temperament and attitude. He's going to go to work and study and prepare. He's a tough guy. He's confident in his abilities. He's not the tallest guy but sometimes that works in his favor. He's got leverage. He's got the quickness and acceleration to get off the ball. I'm happy to see we have him locked up on a contract. He does all the things you ask him to do. You need guys with that sort of attitude on your defense.
(On Jayrone Elliott) So much of that depends on your opponent, how the game goes. We like him. I think he's gotten better and better. You saw a little flash in the preseeason as a rookie. He's an athletic guy. He had two or three plays that were just what you want. We've seen that out of him. We're trying to monitor the reps and keep Julius fresh. He's in the mix.
(On Matthews blitz) Cassel didn't take the protection to Clay. Clay wasn't inching up in there. He was flat-footed. The back thought he was in coverage. Cassel was looking strong and Clay came weak. Morgan and Ha Ha deserve credit for disguising the coverage.
(On when offense was running well) I think the combination of us... Dallas was No. 1 in time of possession and 10-plus play drives. If we can get off the field 13 of 14 times because they don't get extended drives, that's a really good combination.

Provided for information only:

Usually on Monday evenings McCarthy and the coordinators give pressers. This season the lineup has been MM, Capers, Clements, Edgar, and Zook.

No Clements tonight.  Doubt we'll see him for the rest of the season at one of these. Nothing to be gained from the media, even the benign GB types (thanks Bob), asking him about what went wrong, what this means for his future, and (Wilde specialty) how he feels about all this.

Does that mean he's fat too?

Statement game this weekend. They go out there flat and convert less than 50% 3rd downs and they are who we thought they were. But if this O takes off with the new play caller and we win like last week, I feel much better about our chances in the playoffs.

Didn't want to quote the entire post but wanted to comment on Capers:
For as much grief as I give him, and for as many times as I have tried to run him off, it's hard to argue with the results of the defense over the last 5 games. Despite 2 of them being losses, both opponents were held to low scores. Stafford and Cutler did next to nothing against us, Megatron and Jeffery were the only WRs to have solid, but not spectacular performances, and both running games were held in check.

Henry may have been correct in a post from earlier this year when he said DC's forte' was scheming. There have been too many breakdowns in the execution of plans, but the concepts of accomplishing what needed to be done have been dead-on. Again, I'll grant that we haven't faced a murderer's row of QBs in this span, but I can't argue the scheme of eliminating the threat to force these guys to beat us...which they can't.

Green Bay - The following is a summary of Packers coach Mike McCarthy's pre-practice press conference Wednesday morning:

  • (On Montgomery, Linsley) Hopefully, they'll practice today.
  • (On Khalil Mack) We had a chance to play them last year in pre-season. Extremely athletic, good motor, instinctive player.
  • (On Woodson) He’s excellent around the football. That’s what we look at when we detail the offense. He’s always clawing at the ball. Very strong hands. His anticipation skills are at a high level. He’s playing very well.
  • (On Quarless) He'll practice the whole week. I don’t have a set plan. Definitely better last week than the week before.
  • (On Carr) Good young player, gets the ball out quick. They're doing a lot of shifts and motions. Good young player.
  • (On using a fullback) You evaluate as a one-back or a two-back team. That's how you judge the personnel.
  • (On leaving on Friday) The time of year is a factor. It definitely helps going out on Friday from an acclimation standpoint. It creates a challenge with your practice team. You look at all those things. With us going out Friday, we have a return trip the following week to Arizona. Practicing on Saturday is different than on Friday now.
  • (On wet conditions Sunday) We took care of the football. Definitely a factor in winning. Maybe a better focus. It's football. Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn't.
  • (On Lacy) Put together some really good weeks. This is a huge challenge for us. You play uncommon opponents it's difficult, especially on the road. You can just look it up.
  • (On Starks in pass game) He's an ascending player. He started off here in 2010, he was an impact runner for us. Really, to be a three-down player, it’s always about pass protection. Our protection system is complicated and James has mastered that. He has pass receiving skill. Our system is difficult.
  • (On screen pass) There's different ways to run screens. If you're just talking about every time it went to the back, then productivity goes up. We do other things. We're an adjustment offense. I have never had a post-game review where the screen was not a positive evaluation.
  • (On two-back offense) That's what you want. When you have two backs you can lean on, we're fortunate. We have two backs with different styles.
  • (On Jake Ryan) Just about opportunity. He's been making progress. So far, so good. He's put together two good games.

And that's it for McCarthy. We'll have a practice report and interviews from the locker room later in the day. | Dec. 16, 2015 11:17 a.m.

MUST NOT sleep on this team

@BenFennell_NFL: Derek Carr & the #Raiders offense has already produced 53 plays of 20+ yards (13 TDs) this year... Only had 36 all of last season (5 TDs).

Since the CWood experience in Green Bay, and McKenzie going to Oakland, I tend to have a 'softer' outlook on their team. Then, I remember just how dirty they were on defense in the 70s and 80s, and my hatred for them comes flooding back. And it still burns white hot.

The one play I remember above all others happened so long ago, I may not have the players correct, but I'll NEVER forget seeing the replay on the highlight show that night.
IIRC, it was a 1978 game, and the Packers had attempted a long pass that was incomplete. The play was over and the players were heading back to their respective huddles, but the Packers receiver (Lofton?) and the Raiders DB (Hayes or Tatum?) were still 20-30 yards downfield from everyone else. As they began jogging back, the Raiders guy comes from behind and literally clubs our WR in the side of the head! Of course, no one was looking so there was no penalty, but it was one of the most blatant, dirty act I've seen on a football field.

I pray that we crush them yet again.

Best NFL conversion rate this season is New Orleans at 47%.

For many of us our run of network broadcast is over (Go go goatd.net!)

@JeffAshGB:  Fox showing Sunday's #Packers #Raiders game to ORANGE areas + Fairbanks, AK, per @506sports. Subject to change.
