Nice work...

Get this: Matthews was so little thought of as a linebacker at Agoura High School (Calif.) that his position coach didn't start him most of his career there. And that coach was his dad. Matthews was so unheralded at USC that he had to walk-on. His dad and uncle are USC All-Americans and still he got no scholarship. He spent more time on the bench than Thurgood Marshall. And every day, for four and a third seasons, he asked position coach Ken Norton Jr., "Why?"

It really is amazing that the two best players (arguably) have had to start out at the bottom. AR at Butte Community and Bloodline as a walk-on.

Was just about to start a thread on this. May as well stick it here. Clay II talks Clay III:

Former Cleveland Browns linebacker Clay Matthews has one son in the Super Bowl and another in the Senior Bowl

quote:
"It's been a big year. It's amazing," Matthews said in a telephone conversation. "I'm just enjoying it. My brother figured out the other day -- in 38 years, we played in one Super Bowl. Clay got one in just two years in the league."

(snip)

"Knowing where he came from, anybody would be [surprised]," Clay said. "It's been great watching him. He didn't start at SC [University of Southern California] until his fifth game of his senior year. Here we are, and he's going to the Super Bowl.

"He's not by any means satisfied with where he's at. He's already talked about things he wants to work on. By the nature of how he developed at USC, I don't think he'll ever take anything for granted. He had to fight and scratch to get on the field. As a pass rusher, he's done that for, what, 21/2 years. So I think you can make the case that he'll get better at it.

"He's [a] better [NFL player] than me. He's got a motor. He can run. He gets to the ball and makes plays." continue
Great article and well worth the click. Clay II reveals what sparked the long hair style for Clay III, talks about how happy he is that his son is in Green Bay, talks about Rodgers, and how fun it is to watch the 2010 Green Bay Packers...

-Something tells me Clay III is going to be one motivated mofo once that ball is kicked off. He's not just playing for himself, he's playing for the whole Matthew's family and their legacy.
It keeps guys working and humble when they aren't handed everything. Those star players who get it all on a platter don't get what it's like to be hungry.

Some great lines in the Reilly column:

"...Matthews' mane rival being Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu, whose mop resembles a black wooly sheep that mated with a bottle of Rogaine."

On Clay: "With the hair, the Cuisinart arm-flailing and the shrink-wrap jersey, quarterbacks must think they're being attacked by a Swedish raptor."

I love Reilly when he's on top of his game writing good columns. Miss him in Sports Illustrated, where he was really good.

You're just coming into this information? This was a hot topic when he was drafted.
It's not just Matthews, but that could be his best move in the draft IMO. At the time a lot of people wondered why he did what he did, but now it looks like a phenominal value. Put it another way- if the 2009 draft was held all over again you could make a case that Matthews might be taken in the top 3 overall.

I'm sure New England would have loved to take him at #26 - instead of picking up a 2nd and two 3rds. Damn you ROTTT!

The 2009 draft was pretty impressive overall- with two studs in Raji and Matthews and two other starters in Johnson and Jones. I also wouldn't close the door on TJ Lang or Brandon Underwood just yet.

Somewhat similar to Wolf trading for Bert just a gut feeling hunch that worked out for the best.

Who nows maybe TT will top the Matthews move wouldnt that be sweet.

I think you'd still have to say AR is the best move, TT still had to make that choice when everyone else was letting him slide. I know it wasn't a reach but I'm sure the doubts about the drop were still there.

Matthews on the other hand, there had to be some serious points put on the player traits side of the ledger for TT to make the move he did to get the Claymaker.

A franchsie QB is still #1 in the process of winning games and making Super Bowls.

Nice to know we got both and better yet, that we have TT making those moves. All JMO.
