Kevin Greene Wants to Return, Dom Capers Says No

By Joseph Bonham, 9:00 am

Kevin Greene abruptly left the Green Bay Packers and coaching in January 2014, just days after the team’s season ended at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers.

Greene, who coached the Packers’ outside linebackers from 2009-13, stepped away to spend time with his family. Now, the newly-elected Hall of Famer wants to get back in the game.

Greene has expressed interest in returning to the Packers. Unfortunately, defensive coordinator Dom Capers has already killed that possibility.

“I’m sure you’ll see Kevin at some point in time back in the league coaching,” Capers said. “There’s nothing available (with the Packers). That’s always (a big factor) in this business in terms of availability. But he’s a passionate guy. He did a good job for us in the five years he was here.”

When Greene left, the Packers removed the “inside” from inside linebackers coach Winston Moss’ job title. On paper, Moss coaches all linebackers. In reality, he still only coaches inside linebackers and assistant linebackers coach Scott McCurley coaches outside linebackers.

As for Capers’ assertion that the Packers don’t have an opening, well… When a talented individual comes along and you don’t have an opening, you create one.

Greene brought something to the Packers that no other coach on Mike McCarthy’s staff ever has.

Fire.

Passion.

His presence was refreshing, especially when compared to the dour, dull Capers.

We can only assume the Packers’ reluctance to bring Greene back is because either, A. someone is holding a grudge over his unexpected departure or, B. someone is worried about their job.

Not Dom's decision right?

Maybe. Maybe not. I could see MM allowing Capers to have say over this position or say whether KG comes back. I suspect more then Dom, MM was not amused that Greene left. Several reports we're that MM had no idea Greene wanted to leave and he was more or less blindsided.

All kidding aside, IF KG is a good coach and he wants to come back shouldn't MM swallow his pride and welcome him back into the fold?

MM swallow is pride ? that's half the problem with this Packer team. MM is way to thick headed for that.

Well, Dom Capers could be using the "corporate line" in order not to offend or scare any currently employed coaches.  This happens a lot...an applicant expresses interest the response is "we'll keep your resume on filed".  Then the employer talk about it and then if something can be worked out it gets done or it doesn't.

From what we have seen, heard and read there had to be a lot of internal turmoil among the Packers coaching staff.  No sense in someone saying something pre-maturely or out-of-place.

I've been as critical as anyone of Moss, but his OLBs have performed really well since he took over coaching them. Arguably better than Kevin Greene. Then again Moss has had part time Clay, Peppers, Perry, Neal, Elliot, and Mulumba while Greene had Clay, Perry, Mulumba, Palmer, Zombo, etc. Moss has had more talent to work with, but he's supervised the conversion of Neal and Peppers, which have gone surprisingly well.

According to one of the papers, McCurley is working with the outside linebackers. Moss' title changed after Greene left, but apparently not his responsibilities.
