I suspect the DL situation last year and the experience of that drop-off may have spawned this approach. I wouldn't expect a complete departure from his core philosophy, but at least some flexibility in matters like this. And as mentioned, it's a safe, one year deal, so not exactly debilitating if it doesn't work out.
From Pro Football Weekly

" There was growing sentiment among regular Packers camp watchers before the signing of RB Cedric Benson that projected featured back James Starks was not sufficiently progressing. “I get the feeling we might have seen the best of what he had to offer in the (2010) playoffs,” one daily team observer said. “I’ll tell you what: None of these RBs can pick up the blitz, which is going to keep (FB John) Kuhn on the field more.”
Packers QB Aaron Rodgers welcomes the addition of RB Cedric Benson if he can help the running game: "It’s good for our team to have guys who have had success other places come here, add some leadership to the team, some experience. I think it’s going to be a good transition. He’s in a spot where he can be around some other veteran players and have maybe more of a leadership role than he’s had at other teams. There’s high expectations for him but we have no doubt he can come in and meet those."

Translation: This is a great opportunity, don't **** it up.

His 5 fumbles (lost 2) last season came in back-to-back games. That to me indicates a mental/preparation issue.

Talked to two people who've forgotten more about football than I know (which isn't hard, I grant you) about @Cedric_Benson vs. @RyanGrant25.

One said, "You can't think Grant is better than Benson. It's not even close." Other one concurred. Which is why I ask such questions.

I'd like to read more about that; he didn't fumble once in 14 games in 2011, then he put the ball on the ground 5 times in 2 weeks in December...WTF ?
3 in a dome against a crappy Rams team.

2 the following week against a crappy Arizona team. Christmas anxiety ??

2 lost fumbles in 280 carries last year.

19 total fumbles in his career (1529 carries). Lost 11 fumbles in 7 years.

He's a Capricorn.

It is odd...

@STL (Dome): 3 fmbls, lost 0 (recovered 2 himself, 3rd recovered by OL)
ARI: 2 fmbls, lost 2 - sunny day according to the video on NFL.com

Wilde types their twitter addresses in hopes of a reaction. If reporting the news isn't enough...try to make some. Even if it's true, it seems kind of insulting and calculated to send it directly to Grant

Neither game should be close enough where it would matter
Arod on Benson:

Said Rodgers: ”Hopefully young guys are taking notes – how much it means to him. I don’t know if this is a second chance for him and he’s viewing it like that and he wants to do some of the things that he hasn’t done in the past, or maybe this is normal for him. But we love it. Because this offense a lot of times turns into best-play scenarios at the line of scrimmage with me making some checks, and him and I being on the same page is going to be important for us. I love how much it means to him, and I love the chip he’s got on his shoulder.”

He lists guys' twitter handles when referencing them, big whoop. From what little I've seen of twitter they all do it as standard practice in part because "mentions" are a big thing. Nothing to see here, move along.

Benson has been sitting in on quarterback meetings in an attempt to learn the offense in a hurry. Benson arrived nine days ago and is working hard to learn a foreign terminology so that he can handle all of the offense come the regular season. "He’s taken my seat in the meeting room," McCarthy said. "He sits next to Aaron. I’ve been bumped back a row. I think that’s a good thing. He’s really into trying to learn this offense because I know I’ve said it a couple times already, he’s trying to learn a different language. He’s an accomplished football player. I’m glad he’s here. He seems very motivated. And I know he’s looking forward to playing Thursday (against Cincinnati)."
Ahman Green shares his thoughts on Benson coming to GB.

quote:
Q: What's your take on the Packers' running game right now?

Green: "Yeah, their running game has hit a rough patch. A lot of their running backs are young. Even (James) Starks is only three years in. You have (Marc) Tyler and (Brandon) Saine. Those guys are all young so they have to go through the pressure of learning the playbook and the pressure of just going out there and performing at a high level. So I think they'll get it but they'll have their time of bumps and bruises. Hopefully, something gets figured out. Bringing in Cedric Benson is a big deal because he brings that veteran leadership. He's a guy who has been there before. He went to the Super Bowl with the Bears back in '06 so he has that experience to get to the next level. I know that once he gets his opportunity to play, which will be this week, he's going to do what he's always done for the Bears and the Bengals and be a good asset for the offense."

At that point in the game, the Titanic had already hit the Iceburg and the ship was already going down. That fumble just shut the lights out. What a horrible game.
quote:

“I’ve never been in an offense like that,” Benson said of the Packers’ up-tempo, no-huddle approach and primarily one-back tack to the running game. “There were a few times last year here in Cincinnati we tried to attempt it, but I’ve never really been in anything like this.

“It’s like a kid in a candy store. All I’ve got to do is press the hole and let the linemen get their headgear on one side and then explode through the hole on the backside. That’s easy work for me.”

By unofficial count, Benson played 19 snaps during the first half before calling it a night. He finished with 38 yards on six carries. He also caught one pass for 10 yards.

I saw a picture last night.

It said, Wash the **** out of your clothes and showed a picture of Bensons Bear jersey and his Packer jersey. Made me laugh but I can't find it online right now
