What I generally saw were complaints about the defense measured in a multitude of entire seasons.  That is about as remote from "a rough outing" as one can get.

Take everything I write and divide it by 5 and the result is 1/2 the Truth, most of the time.

Wrong on Shields but right on Raji. They already offered Raji $8 million. Why he didn't take it is beyond me but that's bad advice from his agent.

Shields agent is Drew Rosenhaus which is not a good thing for anyone except Rosenhaus.

I guess that's why I said I don't think they will resign both of those guys - possibly for different reasons

Similar to Jennings they offered Raji a pretty competitive deal and for whatever reason he turned them down.   I would not expect another offer from the Packers because they just don't operate that way.  Raji had his chance and he blew it.

As for Shields, I just don't see how or why the Packers should pay him top 5 CB money because I don't know that he's a top 5 CB.   He's been a solid player for them but is he an elite player?   I don't think that he is and I wonder what giving him the big time $$$ will do to his motivation.   There were plenty of times this year where he got lazy and was beaten and while that can and does happen I just don't think it's a good use of their money.   It's one thing to resign a Rodgers or CMIII to big time money but I just don't view Shields in the same light as a game changer.

I don't think Shields ever played lazy.  There was a lot of miscommunication between him and the other DBs which may have been  his fault and it may not have been.  The closing speed he has shown is not found in many other players and that makes him worth a little more, maybe a lot more.  Plus he is not afraid the stick his nose in a tackle a guy which can not be said about other DBs.  And he is a pretty good tackler too.

I've seen this mentioned a couple times already.  It was/is my impression that the Packers have a pretty good working relationship with Rosenhaus. I seem to remember both saying as much.

I have to wonder if he keeps that level once the motivation goes from getting paid to protecting the contract by avoiding injury.  It would cross my mind if I were him.

Once in a while Dom pulls out a corner-blitz from his vast 3-ring binder of plays. Other than that, our CB's should be covering receivers not having to tackle RB's.

I think Tramon is finally getting back to 2010 form & while I agree Shields may not be top 5, he is probably top 10 in the league & needs to be paid as such. Good CB's are not cheap. Shields is a good CB. Pay the man & move along

Perhaps I am misunderstanding...but unfortunately, the OCs in the NFL know how to make sure that the CB is the free man responsible for making that RB tackle. They have everybody else blocked up ( theoretically)

Packers try to do the same thing on outside runs

What we also saw is that OCs would use a lot of hitches on pass routes - quick short passes that force the CB to make tackles and if they don't: the opponent just keeps calling those plays like a bludgeon.

Packers do the same thing > 3rd & short they throw a quick out to Jordy and force the opposing CBs to tackle him. Then Jordy stiff- arms them and makes the first down.  Sorry, but your CBs  have to tackle, whether its an RB or a WR.

We don't need no stinkin' deion's on this squad

Shields got lazy in the sense that he was peeking a lot into the backfield.  More so than previous years.   Unfortunately that caused him to get beaten more often than he should.

Don't get me wrong I think they are better with him than without him but not at 10MM per year that I think he's going to command.   The Packers may have a tough choice to make because I'd rather they allocate those dollars to extending Cobb and Jordy.  If they have enough money to go around including Shields that's even better but I would not break the bank on him

I want LB and DL to be big hitters (and safeties to some extent).  CB need to be able to cover first and foremost.  Everything else is gravy (though I do want you to at least be able to tackle).  If you can blitz, that is great.

I know the offense designs plays for isolations on corners, probably because they are corners.  If Tramon can break up a bubble screen, that is more important to me than if he can take down AP with a head of steam.

Just a little spit balling here. What if the Packers do not sign Shields, Raji, or Finley then what do they do? Could Ted go after one of the big name Safety free agents? I would think in their (Packers)  brain storming sessions they must of thought up that one.

That's fair and with the smaller guys like Tramon and Shields, you don't want them getting pummeled

That's not what I meant but, per usual, your point stands & is made much better than mine.

Maybe he was peeking in to the backfield because he knew he might have to tackle a RB. Nobody else on the defense was, especially late in the season.  And once again his speed to recover and tackle a WR is something you just don't find everyday. I'm with Boris, he is a top 10 CB and should be paid like one.

Shields needs to be signed. On a defense that's lacking in speed and/or players who play fast, they can ill afford to lose one of the few guys that doesn't suffer in this area. It'll cost a good chunk of money, but he's a player that's still getting better. I think it would be a great investment at one of the most critical positions in the game.

If the Packers were tight against the cap and Shields was wildly inconsistent, I'd be more inclined to be leery of giving him a huge contract. But this kid is 26 and he is still ascending.

A trio of Sam Shields, Casey Hayward, and a healthy Tramon Williams (his shoulder finally seems healed).

GB could do a hell of a lot worse at CB.

Tramon has to lower his cap number. If he won't restructure then it's either him OR Shields and I would rather have the younger guy. I have a hunch Tramon will restructure, he's a little old to be starting new somewhere else. I think Shields should be a priority, you can't replace his athleticism. You can replace Raji's size or strength, but Shields has great size, great speed, and a lot of experience for a guy his age.

Tramons' another player whose contract comes up next year.  I could see an extension happening with him. Would like to see his 9.5 mill salary this year turned into a signing bonus and extend him for another 2 or 3 years with something in the range of 4 to 5 mill average.
