Which one has cemented their legacy and made more of an impression on WI sports history? As much as NFL is king and I personally follow Rodgers more, the more I read/see about Giannis the more I feel that he is the one I’ll end up respecting more from a fan perspective 20 years from now….

Should  I be around that is.

Rodgers, but only because football is king, and especially because Green Bay Packers football is king of Wisconsin.

If Giannis gets multiple NBA Title rings, maybe the Bucks become kings of the state for awhile, but I still think they are a far distant 2nd or 3rd fiddle to the Packers.

Giannis has so much less drama surrounding him than Aaron does. I love them both, but if I had to pick one, it would be Giannis. It seems Giannis has to prove himself, each season, to get sports pundits to recognize how great he is. Giannis, winning this season's MVP, should be a done deal, but it isn't due to sports show people dissing him. Aaron doesn't have anything to prove, anymore--except to Packers' fans that he can win in the playoffs.

This is what I was getting at. It’s my opinion that if you were to reverse their roles  that Rodgers could probably run for governor and win. Giannis coming back from what seemed to be a horrific knee injury and winning a title, coupled with how he carries himself and says all the right things should make him more iconic than he actually is. We can all say that this is the case, but I don’t personally believe it is.

Giannis by a gigantic margin.

Rodgers is top 5 QB all-time, but independent of all the drama this past season, if Rodgers never plays for the Packers what really changes? The Packers are one of the legacy teams of the NFL. The Lombardi Packers are one of the most talked about teams in sports history. Harlan, Wolf, Holmgren, and Favre were the group that reenergized the team and made them relevant in the modern era. Rodgers was just the next guy in line (even if he is a lot better than Favre). Lambeau Field was selling out 50+ years ago and that hasn't changed.

The Bucks hadn't won a title since 1971. They had some good teams in the mid-80s and one good run with Allen, Cassell, and Big Dog. However, that 2000-01 team was the only Bucks team to win a playoff series or a division title between 1989 and 2018. In 2013, they played in a building that was built for hockey in the mid-1980s and were probably headed out of Milwaukee soon.

They obviously won a title last year. They are constantly on national TV. They're becoming a brand world-wide. People across the globe that didn't even know Milwaukee existed wear Giannis jerseys. The Deer District (a part of the city that was pretty barren up until about 5 years ago) was filled with 65,000 people who stood outside to watch the NBA Finals last year. Giannis is already considered a top-75 player all-time and he's arguably into the top 25 all-time at this point. The fact that his life story is so unbelievable they made a movie about it just adds to the legend. And most importantly, the fact that Giannis could have gone anywhere he wanted to last year and decided to stay in Milwaukee long-term means a lot. Does anyone seriously believe that Aaron Rodgers would still be in Green Bay if NFL players could move as easily as NBA players?

The bottom line is that without Rodgers, the Packers are still the Packers. Without Giannis, the Bucks are highly likely to not even be in Wisconsin. At best, they are the Indiana Pacers (a team where you go to watch the opposing players).

While his injury looked ugly, it required no surgery or really any treatment. So it's not like this was an ACL. He hyperextended it.

I am a huge Giannis fan but I have also learned to temper my hero worship since my young days following Bert. I have no reason to think Giannis will morph into some self serving A HOLE but then again, in 2011, I never thought Rodgers would hop on the crazy train either.

The NBA or MLB or insert ____ will never compete with the NFL in terms of popularity. It's just the reality. The Bucks are a great story. But there is a reason sports talk radio could talk Packers 365 days a week and get better ratings then talking Bucks/Brewers with both competing for a title. Those sports will forever be the much littler brother to the NFL

I agree with the Bucks take, but don’t agree 100% with the Packers take. Rodgers keeps the Packers relevant by increasing their level of play and their success. If the Packers sucked they would not be on National TV and Primetime as much as they are now. Also, if Rodgers never plays for the Packers, I doubt they win the SB in 2010.

I don't watch the NBA anymore so it's easy.  Rodgers is hated by other teams fans because he is so good and knows how to subtly rub their faces in it. I would probably hate him too if he played for anyone but green bay. Packers are also a national team and bucks are not. A lot more people care about the packers than any team in the NBA except for maybe Boston. Rodgers wins by pure numbers. In 20 years sports fans will still be talking more about Rodgers greatness  than Giannis. Probably wisconsin fans too.

Giannis...because I played basketball in Greece and the idea that anyone could spring from Athens to the NBA is unbelievable, I don't care what their origin story is...

well  ...okkay.....my Greek basketball career was on a third rate  military team...and when we played in Athens we were typically so hung over from  our 'prep 'night in  Glyfada Square that what we did on the court could only roughly be considered basketball...

If Rodgers wins another Super bowl maybe that changes things, but I can't imagine that happening. One title pales in comparison to the Lombardi era and that is what football in Green Bay will continue to have to be compared with.

The early 70s Bucks were great, but Giannis has already matched their title wins.

Maybe Gainnis does something that tarnishes his legacy or goes elsewhere and becomes more affiliated with another city..and maybe Rodgers becomes more positive and beloved after football and this reflects on his Green Bay connections---but I'm thinking the chance of that is about as probable  as Randall Woodfield being placed in the Lambeau Ring of Honor.

For those that actually live in this state or follow basketball it’s Giannis by a significant margin.  For those that don’t live in this state and/or don’t follow the Bucks or NBA you have no clue.  Some of the comments in this thread are utterly ridiculous.  Like seriously.

It’s what I love and hate about Wisconsin and the Packers.   Put it another way, it’s not all about the Packers all the time. Or it shouldn’t be.

You have to take the time to branch out and experience other cool WI sports moments like the 2001 and 2018-2022 Bucks, 2011 and 2018 Brewers, Badgers Final Four runs w/Bo Ryan, Dwayne Wade Final Four run.  Badgers Rose Bowl Ws.  All cool shit.

If you are a real sports fan, you have to experience the Bucks and Fiserv Forum. It’s pretty incredible. I’m heading there tomorrow night for game 1.  Been to all the Wisconsin sports events and stadiums and arenas and Fiserv is as electric as any of them.  Arguably more so than Lambeau. Been to a number of playoff or postseason games as well.

In the end, Rodgers is a self absorbed arrogant d bag poser that has failed to answer the bell time and time again and he won’t this year either. Run for Governor?  Lol.  He’s a fake ass Cali flake that would get boat raced if he ran against a horrible opponent. Like Tony Evers awful opponent.

Brings back memories. Was stationed in Greece the early 80's. No basketball but softball, volleyball and bowling. Plenty of hungover experiences. Except for bowling, the other team asked us if we were there to drink or bowl. We won the championship 😎

Giannis seems like a great guy but it is Rodgers by a mile for me.  The Packers are the king of Wisconsin sports and always will be and the NBA to doesn’t even get within the anything close to the NFL in popularity.  Rodgers can be a total d bag but he plays QB for the team I love more than any other.

Yount was excellent but he’s not Giannis

As for the “NFL is king” crowd what exactly has that shitbag pimp to NFL owners done to make the product better?  Nothing.

I know some hate the NBA but they are leaps and bounds ahead of what fans want to see. If the NFL doesn’t adapt and improve they will be dead in 10 years.

Giannis is a better player than Rodgers ever was amongst his peers and he’s not an arrogant fucko to boot.

The NFL is king. You can love the Bucks and Brewers all you want but they both pale in comparison to the NFL. As great as the other teams or players may be, most don’t give a shit. It’s Packer football day in and day out.

Lol yeah OK ammo

If Giannis leaves the game tomorrow he’s accomplished more than Yount over his entire career.

Quit hating on the guy and the Bucks.

Celebrate yo

LOL to you. Show me how I'm hating on Giannis or the Bucks?  I just prefer Yount.  You got some great imagination there.

Reality says NFL/Rodgers; heart says Giannis. Rodgers was king of the hill until he decided he was bigger than the team and the game; after that, it's been disappointingly downhill. But the NFL remains the #1 sport, so it's what we talk about. The Greek Freak is a generational talant whose story is almost unbelievable and he genuinely seems humble and willing to continue getting better at his game.

Giannis for now, but ask me in a few years and let's see if Giannis remains almost too good to be true.

Agreed on the Giannis too-good-to-be true part.

Some of this depends on whether you are considering just the sport's popularity in the US vs. worldwide. In terms of US sports, the NBA is exponentially more popular than the NFL worldwide. It's really only behind soccer in terms of pure numbers. Giannis puts Wisconsin on the map in Europe, Asia (mainly China), and Africa. No one knows who Rodgers is outside the US or Canada.

5 times as many people watch basketball relative to football worldwide.

And yet Jordan is regarded by everyone as the number 1 athlete ever. No NFL player comes close.

The NFL is a team sport. The NBA is a superstar league. Giannis is a megastar in that league. It’s not as cut and dried as you think.

As a rule I don’t get involved in these kind of discussions. They are stupid. Not much more intellectually stimulating than the Superman vs Batman thing or worse, Jordan vs Lebron. Your answer reminds me of that. I don’t actually give a shit. Carry one. 😀
