Packers Rookie Abruptly Retires From NFL Ahead of OTAs (msn.com)

Easy Packer Hall of Famer.
I'd say retire his number but I suppose he would have needed one assigned first.
He saw what was ahead and realized he had no shot, the physicality was way above what he expected, and he values his brain (I suspect). When it's time, it's time.
Back in my day they called it quit.
You mean those "my days" that old players can't remember any more?
I know that I would be absolutely torn about quitting. It was so hard to give up my amateur hockey career; after almost 25 years of playing year-round up to five, six nights a week, it felt like a death in the family. Yet, my knee was beyond shot and the ends of the bones looked like the cratered surface of the moon, my shoulder was -- at best -- iffy, my back could flare up at any time, my hip was giving signs of the replacement to come, etc. And yet, I had to sell all of my gear as soon as stepped off the ice so I wouldn't even be tempted to play again.

Would you like to formally retire as a Green Bay Packer ?
We can probably arrange a 1-day contract and then you can go out in style.

Back in my day you had to start working before you quit.
Back when I was a retail manager I hired several folks who agreed to come work in my store, only they never showed up for their first day. Aggravating, had to start the whole hiring process all over with an already understaffed store.
