Is it if he still has the ball? I mean, I get it if he has thrown the pass and the defender takes 2+ steps, but isn't it just a sack/tackle if the QB has the ball?

Hopefully the preseason calls stabilize some during the regular season.

How do you tackle someone without leading with your helmet? If the player with the ball ducks, or lowers himself, his helmet comes into play against the defender. I watched the vikings-jags game on replay. Tons of penalties committed by both teams. Some were real head scratchers and it was interesting to hear Paul Allen and his cohorts of purple shame, dance around the Rodgers hit Barr committed with no flag thrown.  The refs are going to throw a lot of flags in preseason, and IMO, not throw many during the regular season unless they can change the outcome of the game or provide a momentum shift to the other team. Also IMO, any new rules will give refs more opportunity to show off their poor officiating skills.

Remember the play a few years back when Perry crushed Andrew Luck's soul, caused a fumble, recovered by GB and while the defense celebrated no one noticed the personal foul flag for hitting a defenseless player?

I get why that would be a penalty now because Perry put his helmet right into Luck's sternum....But I've still not forgotten that play. Perry did everything perfectly.

I remember as well. Textbook play by 53.

Luck, a strong man who wasn't embellishing, went down like a house of cards. I thought Nick might have ended his career right there.
