Running back Ryan Grant could have a new home in the NFL before the draft according to Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Though his agent, Alan Herman, declined to name the team, he said: “There’s some things actually going on with Ryan but not with Green Bay. That’s a strong possibility, more than a strong possibility,” Herman said. “It could be as early as next week.”

Grant has played for the Packers since 2007. He split time last season with James Starks. A year after playing in only one game because of leg and ankle injuries, Grant averaged 4.2 yards per carry and rushed for 559 yards. He appeared to get stronger as the season went on, averaging 5.5 yards per carry over his final five games, including playoffs

Too bad.
Grant may not be a home run threat, but he's a good, strong, dependable back. As long as he can stay away from the injury bug, he should be able to contribute for another year or three.
And he was indeed running very well those last few games.
Bye. Why do some people fall in love with pedestrian type players? Nice guy... hard worker. Appreciate the time he put in. But very, very replaceable.

Nothing personal. I just be a bidness man.

Not sure, but I think it has something to do with the Green and Gold uniform
Hardworking great guy. He'll play another year or 2 somewhere.

But like Lombardi said....

"It's better to get rid of a guy one year too soon, rather than 1 year too late."
Well if Grant signs with another team it means the Packers will pick up a 4 or 5th comp pick next year. They sign 2 free agents one street free agent lost 3 free agents, with Grant that will be 4 players lost. So they can get 2 comp picks.

Better than pedestrian, but not elite. I think he did look like he was on the way down last year even though he still showed flashes of his old self at times. In 2007 and 2009 when he was healthy, he was a good player. I know Pro Football Weekly had him as a top 10 NFL RB going into the 2010 season and that's a consensus of scouts and other top NFL personnel that put those lists together for PFW, not just some journalists offering their opinion.

But I think it's realistic to think we will not see the 2009 version of Grant again no matter who he plays for.

Starks hasn't demonstrated an ability to stay on the field and Green is coming off a serious injury. If Grant's gone TT will have to do something.
We know what Starks is capable of in the rare event he can stay on the field. Alex Green showed a few flashes of potential and was a 3rd rounder. Saine is just a guy, but he can at least be a 3rd RB in the NFL.

I think there's enough here to move on without missing Grant, especially if he's asking for more than vet minimum. And I'm sure we'll see a draft pick added, possibly as high as the 2nd or 3rd with rumors of the team sniffing around Chris Polk from Washington.

One of Ted's best moves.

Both Grant and Starks were acquired for 6th round picks and both contributed to playoff runs. Grants' playoff game vs Seattle in the snow was a classic

Other than, good idea. All the talk of GB having interest in McClellin is actually interest in another late Rd.1/early Rd.2 Boise St choice. I think they draft Doug Martin.
I think James is a game-breaker, and if the Packers took him in the 2nd round (late, of course), how could you argue with it?

I have a feeling one of the playoff teams will take him in the 1st, though. I don't think anyone will be too hung up on his size if you recognize the role that is right for him. The fact that he could break any play for a score might push someone to pull the trigger early. Maybe even Green Bay.
RBs of Grant's ability are a dime a dozen

That's not to suggest James Starks is totally the answer either

GB needs more talent at the position, period

Thanks for the contributions Ryan, but don't let the door hit you on the backside on the way out
I have a hunch James will go early 2nd round, well before the Packers pic. Maybe San Diego tries to recapture the Sproles magic they let get away.

Grant was a good work horse for us. Losing him along with Starks not always being available, Green being a total question mark following ACL repair, and Saine being just a guy, necessitates Ted to make a move at RB. Doug Martin would be surprising as I don't see Ted taking a RB so high. Chris Polk is my favorite pick for the Pack....strong, good shiftiness, and very good hands.
This offense doesn't need a dynamic RB.. Look at the production last year.. Just be able to pick up the blitz, catch an occasional dump off and get 3.5 YPC.

I would much rather see TT use early picks on more important positions.. OLB, DE and Safety. (Assuming Collins retires)

But I think what we are seeing is that the passing game benefits from a guy who can create mismatches. Darren Sproles, Chris Johnson, Arian Foster, Ray Rice, Joseph Forte, and Fred Jackson all averaged more than 40 yards/game receiving last season. You have to go back 5 yewars to the 2006 season to find a group of RBs that large with those kinds of numbers. From 2007-2010, only one player/year did and it was only two players: Ray Rice and Reggie Bush.

So having a guy that can get to the flat and pick up 1st downs and sometimes break one is a thing we are seeing a lot more of because it saves your QB. And of course it keeps the short field more honest to open up the longer downfield throws.

I would like to see the Packers get someone with some breakaway speed. If James falls to them I would love it...
The Pats are looking for a RB who can above all pick up the blitz. The Packers have the same priority for RBs, protect the QB; all the other stuff a RB does is secondary. Picking up blitzs is not a dime a dozen skills, it is a skill RB develop in the NFL. A team just can not draft a blitz pick up RB, the RB has to be coached up to be good at it.
