Re-watching the game. Sam Shields in man-to-man coverage, he tries to get a jam on Devery Henderson. Didn't do a good job at the LOS and D.H. was by him immediately.

He needs to watch tape of Al Harris if he's going to continue playing like that.

Did he get complacent? Last year he was very focused and played great but we've seen it all year so far in pre-season and now vs. the Saints. He's not the same player (so far) & we really need him to step it up especially if Tramon is down for any length of time.

Am I the only one noticing this? Sophomore slump?

One game isn't a trend. Let's see how he plays against some lesser WRs.
I'm not too worried about SHields. He struggles with that initial jam (happened twice in the Super Bowl) but it's something that is correctable. Unlike an Ahmad Carroll, Joey Thomas, etc., this is a technique issue that can be corrected, not an overall unawareness on the field. Lets hope he improves on this over the year.

His talent was on display on the coverage he had on Henderson earlier in the game, where he had a chance at an int. It's good to know that your nickel CB can run with any player in the league.
So after one game, Shields is in a sophomore slump because he go beat on one play? Tramon got beat once too, you know. They were playing against Drew Brees.

If you're expecting Shields to be Darrelle Revis at the very start of his second pro season, and third season playing CB at any level, you might want to lower your expectations a bit. He's at least as good as Tramon Williams was at this stage - better, if you ask me.

Like nearly every CB in the league, he's going to get beat once in a while. On most plays, opposing QBs will have the choice of going after Williams, Woodson or Shields. And since I've yet to see the defense that could hold most QB's to under 50% completion ratios, you can expect to see Shields get burned some more as the season goes on.
If you play like Shields did when he was a rookie, 2nd year expectations are going to be very high. (as they should be). The play against Henderson the other night was a reenactment of the TD against Wallace in the Super bowl.

Considering it's only his 3rd season playing CB, and he was playing drew brees and he had the entire offseason to himself, i'm not all that surprised he's not playing at quite the same level.

That said, I would expect shields to pick it up. Or at least I would hope shields picks it up. He, obviously, allowed Capers to do a lot with their defense.

Talked about it in another thread right after the game- back to back plays, Colston roasts him on a square in, the next play is the TD, and he dropped an INT.

But the secondary as a whole looked bad. It seemed to me that Brees was throwing to a LOT of open guys. Radgers was throwing into tight windows, but Brees was throwing to guys with defenders trailing them.

They had a bad day. It's not a trend... yet.
Shields should get better as the season progress's. I dont think you can completely shut down the Saints offense when all their guys are healthy and Brees is not getting hit in the pocket.

GB starts the season slowly every year as a team. Its almost like Gb is still playing preseason games. Now they cant tackle live and only 14 padded practices a year as well as camp being limited. No More two adays in camp what would Magee and Hourning think if Lombardi only had them practice once a day in camp?

Anyway with GB starting slowly we have something to look foward to as the season progresses.Shields with a nice long Pick Six allowing him to show his speed off.

Well said.. He has great ball skills and amazing speed. That cant be taught.

You can teach him to stop whiffing on the jam. I'm not worried after one game against Drew Brees and the Saints.
