So says Packers CB coach Joe Whitt

Packers' Whitt praises Sam Shields, sees open CB competition in 2013

There will be no guarantees at cornerback for the Packers in 2013. On Tuesday, cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt Jr. made that much clear. When players report back to Green Bay, four cornerbacks may engage in an open competition.

“It’s going to be interesting to see who are going to be the guys who run out there on Day One,” Whitt said, “because right now I couldn’t tell you who’s going to do what because the way that Sam and Casey have played. And with Tramon and House there, there’s four guys that are vying for two spots. Maybe three with nickel. It will be interesting to see who gets it.”

Making things is interesting is Shields. After a strong finish this season, he may be ready to take on the opposition's top wide receiver next season. Upon returning from his high ankle sprain Dec. 9, Shields' performance "was comparable, if not better than Tramon’s in 2010," Whitt said.

“Him and (Jarrett Bush) are the most physical corners that we have, but he’s the best tackling one that we have,” Whitt said. “He put that on film. That’s not me talking. …The only reason I’m talking about it is because he took so much criticism in the way he performed last year through training camp. And to come back and play — especially the last six games — the way that he’s played, I think is very encouraging to what he can be in the future.”

Good on Shields for taking all the heat and turning it into belly fire. Good on Whitt for using one of his limited opportunities to talk to the media to give credit where credit is due. Shields earned all of it. Past the click Whitt has comments on Heyward and there's all kinds of in between the lines stuff for Tramon.

It's a nice problem most teams wish they had--4 potential starters at corner for 2-3 spots, with 3 of them having started and played at a high level for a significant period of time. Glad to see the message is being sent that no matter your salary, you aren't guaranteed a starting spot.

And, if we could generate a consistent pass rush, I think the play of these guys could approach "shut down" status.
Like the comments as I see it as word is passed to Tramon, that level of play won't cut it next year if the younger guys are healthy. As good as Heyward has been in the slot, I'd like to see him on the outside.
That's not true. As others have said, he played Marshall as well as anyone in the league in two games among other strong showings. That's what's so frustrating - knowing what he's capable of.

If it was just a tackling issue, they could always take him off of early downs. Unfortunately, even his coverage was erratic.

I'm curious about Hayward's ability on the outside, but he was the best nickel corner in football by some metrics, so it may not be worth messing with a good thing.
Not sure if there was some residual effects from the shoulder injury, but TW's inconsistent play was maddening. Shield's aggressive tackling was a pleasant surprise and combined with his very solid cover play he'll probably end up as the #1 corner.
Shields is your #1 corner right now. Doesn't mean Tramon won't bounce back either. I like that Whitt openingly states all spots are up for grabs. Really appreciate what Whitt brings to the table as a position coach. That in itself shouldn't be ruled out in a argument for Tramon making a rebound.
Tramon deserves his criticism but he still has a very good skill set. I am happy to see comments coming from Whitt stating there will be an open competition next year at CB. Complacency breeds laziness. I would pause before moving Hayward out of the slot though. That's a difficult position to play and he is obviously good at it.
I wonder if any teams have been considering an offer for Sam Shields in RFA

I don't know how much cap space the 49ers have, but they surely have enough picks to make it happen. They have the 2nd pick of the 2nd round along with the 31st pick of the 2nd

They could easily use that late 2nd for a Sam Shields offer sheet, and they'd still have the high 2nd and (2) 3rds available

They also have needs at CB and would be only too happy to swipe one from the Packers

99% of the time, the coaches decisions are going to be right more often than what the fans think is the right decision.

That decision was one of the 1% where I think most people on this board knew it was going to be a mistake and they would pay for it. Bush alone didn't lose that game, but he was every bit as bad as we feared he might be. I guess the good news is, the coaches realized their error and demoted him to 5th CB very quickly.

I think that's a little harsh

There may have been more to it than simply "the coaches thought Bush was better" I have a feeling Shields was causing some issues internally at the start of the season, which would explain him being benched in favor of Bush.

The coaches know Bush is a ST's player only & an absolute emergency DB only when everyone else can't play.
The demotion may have been just the motivation to improve his play. I believe his tackling was better this season, too. And I think the second round is just about right for him at this point. He takes another step forward and it's going to be very expensive to keep him.
One issue with TW was the shoulder and if the plan required TW to play soft or off like against the Bears he had good games but with physical WR's he suffered a bit, here's hoping next year he us healthy and plays at a high level, it would be scary if he was the nickle back

I have a nephew who suffered nerve damage in one of his arms. It may have been 9-12 months after his injury and he helped me move. Well, he overdid it.

He has quite a pain tolerance, but he said he had to go to the ER. It was diagnosed that he simply gave the nerve too much activity and he needed rest (and pain killers) and it wasn't fully healed yet.

When it comes to TW, I always recall my experience of having to take my nephew to the hospital for intense nerve pain almost a year after his injury.
I think Whitt's memory is a little short. Shields had a good year last season; T Will did not, and it's only natural for the most recent season to be freshest in his mind. However, Williams' 2010 season was one for the ages.

I think the reason why Bush started against the Niners in the opener this year was because Shields was a big, if not huge, question going into the season. Remember Shields couldn't tackle a sack of potatoes in 2011, and was having a tough camp in 2012.

I'm all for competition in camp, and want the best players on the field whoever they may be. Experience is on Williams' and Shields' side, and House may have the biggest challenge because of that.

My nephew's pain was excruciating.

If that nerve was not entirely rejuvenated and instead of moving, the poor dude has to play professional football...

He's fubar'ed.

If the above is true, that nerve ought to eventually be fully rejuvenated and all bets are off (read: he better play the position the way it's supposed to be played).
Extension coming soon? I think Sheilds is going to be a rich man... but maybe not with the Packers.

@RobDemovsky
New blog post: Agent Drew Rosenhaus to meet with #Packers today to discuss CB Sam Shields' contract situation.

@RobDemovsky
I'm told the meeting between Rosenhaus and the #Packers is a face-to-face session, per an NFL source.

Agreed. Hope they wrap this up soon. Can't have enough good DB's. Tramon is the one who is on the way out(age, $$$, production) so it's wise to lock up the younger Shields to pair him with Hayward going forward
Sammy Whammy! Well....I accept you.

Glad he's back. Thought his absence at OTA's was a little uncalled for. Hopefully they get him locked up.

I think they might wait and see what kind of a year Shields and Tramon have. If Tramon is unimpressive then he might be let go. He's due $7.2 million next year. That money could be used to sign Shields long term if he continues to play well.
