well...I don't know about that... but...I think it was a "planned" play to try and draw a flag....Brady never throws that poorly in that situation...and I think Gronk was late turning around.  Now, here me out:  the play is designed to go into the endzone...but it's a timing play....the QB needs to throw the ball a bit short so the TE has to come back for it....but the TE purposely tries to run back into the DB or LB as he flails at the ball - knowing full well he can't catch it.

Brady was mad that the refs didn't fall for the trick.  Gronk was late trying to charge back into the DB/LB, otherwise the refs would not have picked up the flag.

It's a typical Bellicheat way of trying to get a call to go your way.

bubbleboy, your theory may be correct. I doubt it though.

But that doesn't negate the fact that two separate penalties occurred on the play.

Gronk didn't force that LB to wrap him up, and make contact with the ball in the air, the defender did that on his own. That is a penalty.

"Throw it in the endzone, maybe we'll get a PI call" is a decades old late game strategy and is not some "trick" or "cheat" invented by Brady and Belicheck.

Like I've said before, the big deal in this is what now constitutes an unteachable ball?

can of worms

"The issue isn't the contact, the issue is the restriction and does it occur prior to the ball being touched," Blandino said on NFL Network. "At full speed the officials made a tight judgment call and they determined that the restriction occurred just as the ball was being touched [by Lester]. Again, at full speed you can see why they made that call."

First sentence is BS. They are going with the at full speed defense. If the speed of the game is the problem, these need to be reviewed.

No, I can't see the "touch" judgment since I can picture double coverage with a DB barely touching/missing a ball and the other DB shoving the receiver out of the way. It just opens a whole other can o' worms.

I might be in favor of officials reviewing a play like this if a)it is made in the end zone, and b)it could directly affect the outcome of a game. Otherwise I fear they would be reviewing plays 50 yards away to see if a guy really was interfered with.

Every time I hear them say it was an uncatchable ball, I have to laugh because it was obvious the ball was catchable since it ended up directly in the gut of a player. Maybe Gronk could have dove back for that ball or at least competed for it. The NFL spinmasters are working overtime on this one...
