So the Raheem Morris experiment is over. Schiano put the Bucs through the toughest offseason routine and conditioning program since Coach Perkins. So, what does it all mean this year?

Look, I make no claims about anything more than a 5 win season this year and we would be hard pressed to get that even with the schedule we have. But, Schiano did ship out Tanard Jackson and Kellen Winslow (one of my least favorite Buccaneers of all time) because they did not take offseason voluntary workouts seriously enough. He has instilled discipline (Raheem was a players Coach), got them better conditioned (Freeman came in 20 pounds lighter, Blount 10 pounds lighter than last year), and broke up the bands. Locker assignments were no longer with your buddies. He assigned them as he wanted.

While all this is good and dandy, I see no pash rush and no run defense still. Half of the front four are still a mess. MLB is a huge question mark though I have read rave reviews of LeVonte David at Brooks old spot. Tampa 2 is gone and replaced by blitzing LB's. Ronde Barber at safety might be a little undersized though he has been good against the run and is a capable blitzer while playing corner. Aqib seems committed to ruining a decent on-field career with horrendous off-field behavior. Eric Wright...question mark...

Offense did get upgrades at receiver and RB. V Jax and Doug Martin will do well. Offensive line lost its best player in the third preseason game vs. Patriots (Davin Joseph). It throws everything up in the air now despite the acquisition of Carl Nicks. Schiano wanted to pund the ground game but without Joseph...good luck. Freeman, when we drafted him, reminded me of McNabb...

So far, he has been inconsistent just like McNabb. Ten years after we win a Super Bowl, it's still bleak in Buccaneer-Land. It has been a tough decade but some day they will turn it around,...hopefully.

Your Packers, on the other hand, are one of the favorites again and should be excellent again. Rodgers is just so good...It's not envy, it's just true admiration for his skills. But then again, he is a CAL guy! Good luck, I know you all have high expectations and I hope the Packers thrill you again.

Schiano took the Barry Alvarez blueprint at Rutgers and made it work pretty well. No nonsense, physical play, and run the football. Granted, Rutgers didn't reach nearly the level of success that Alvarez did at Wisconsin, but he put Rutgers football on the map.

I've always wondered if that style of play would succeed in the pros, and probably the guy that did it the best up to this point was John Fox. But even he's evolved somewhat in that you have to pass the football and the game has become more about passing the football.

Tampa just doesn't have a lot of talent at this point.
I think Josh Freeman has the talent to be a really good QB, he reminds me of Ben Roethlisberger, but he has had such crappy coaching that he hasn't been able to develop. I don't know who his QB coach and OC are now, but they have improved the ground game and got him an actual receiver so I can't imagine he won't be better. That's the key for that team. They need some kind of bright spot to rally behind because they do have a lot of physically talented players, they just seem to play uninspired ball half the time. You can't do that in a division with New Orleans, Atlanta and an improving Carolina. I think Schiane has them on the right track I think, but I don't think it's realistic to expect more than 6 wins. They have a tough schedule.

One of his crappy coaches was Alex Van Pelt.
Chili,

I've posted both positively and negatively about my Bucs on here since 2000. You just joined in 2010. This is hardly my first posting on the Packers Board. Ask anyone who has been here since then...

Truth be told, the Buccaneers today are NOT the Buccaneers of 1996-2003. I am being honest with myself and objective when I say we would be lucky to win 5 games. What do you want me to say...that we have Super Bowl aspirations? That's just not realistic until we can improve the talent...by quite a bit.

Superstars carry teams in any sport generally. We don't have an Aaron Rodgers or a Reggie White...

But, the Lakers have plenty. Cool

FloridaRob,

Yes, you should have...The schedule is killer...despite being last in the division. I think Vegas has us favored in ONE game all year...the RAMS. Red Face

I think we win four,... you were being too kind. paperbag

This defense needs much more help. The offense is brand new too. The jury is out on that still too...

MAYBE we can try again next year... Wink
Having spent plenty of time in the south travelling for work that's the way it goes for teams like Jacksonville and Tampa and Miami and Atlanta and even Carolina.

If you aren't winning you won't sell out those stadiums. Heck, even if you are winning there are a ton of fair weather NFL fans in those markets. Why? It's all about college football and most fans would rather follow ACC or $EC teams because it's a bigger deal.
