Losing Williams and Shields isn't ideal, but the depth in the GB secondary is remarkable.  Line House and Hayward up outside, have Burnett and HaHa deep and slide Hyde down to the nickel slot.  Yep, that leaves Bush in the dime but he's not nearly as terrible as he once was.  Don't sleep on Richardson either.

Hopefully Williams and/or Shields will be back soon.....but if it takes a bit, I think the secondary can sustain it.  Thanks TT and especially the secondary coaches.

The good news is our bye is only 2 weeks away.

The bad news is we play Carolina and New Orleans these next 2 weeks.

We'll just have to see how they respond to treatment. I'm more worried about Shields; Tramon may be able to play on a gimpy ankle, but a patellar injury of any kind sounds bad.

Williams is getting older and has been hot and cold the lately. I could deal better with him going on IR than Shields.

Hayward and House have earned their shot. All things considered, they did pretty well in the closing stages of the game today. Also, GBP can  bump up Banjo from the PS to allow Hyde to be a full-time nickel/dime back.

Less worried about the secondary with the Panthers, as they are a running team..and run the read option which we have trouble with.  The problem with Heyward on the corner is that he lacks speed for the outside, he's much better in the slot.  Might have to go more with zone, and hope we don't have "communication issues" as in the past.

Agree completely with this. May not have any choice due to the injuries, but if they can avoid lining up Hayward outside they need to do it.

hopefully hopefully just a something something - that's as accurate as I can be.

The Green Bay Packers starting cornerback went down during the team’s 27-24 victory over the Miami Dolphins when he was lining up to start a third-quarter series. As he went to his position, he felt what he called a “pinch” and trainers came to attend to him. Shields had to be helped off the field.

“It just gave out. I felt a pinch,” Shields said. “It was out of nowhere.”

Shields said the initial diagnosis was encouraging and that he'll have more tests Monday.

“They said nothing torn or nothing like that, so that’s a good thing,” Shields said. “I guess I’ll go in tomorrow and see what’s up. But it hurts.”

my only guess from a somewhat similar feeling once upon a time is loose cartilage.

#Packers CBs Sam Shields and Tramon Williams avoid major injuries. http://t.co/Scx4CBXBLU

The Green Bay Packers finished Sunday's win over the Miami Dolphins without either of their starting cornerbacks, but there's a chance both Sam Shields and Tramon Williams will be able to play this week against the Carolina Panthers.

Williams
Shields

Coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that neither the fluky looking knee injury that Shields sustained while trying to line up for a play in the third quarter nor the ankle injury that knocked out Williams two plays later turned out to be anything major.

"None of them were long term," McCarthy said. "But how fast [they recover] is still to be determined."

The same goes for linebacker Jamari Lattimore, who left the game in the first half because of a neck injury.

"I really don't have information as far as a timeline really until we see what they can do on Wednesday," McCarthy said. "That will probably be a better indicator."

Shields said after the game that team physician Dr. Pat McKenzie told him nothing was torn and tests on Monday confirmed that.

If there is any question, they both need to sit this week. As Boris says, I don't think the WRS of the Panthers are going to be beat us. It's more likely the read option and routes in the middle of the field.

Even though it would probably guarantee a loss, if there is any question, they should also sit the following week against NO and then get the bye week for extra rest. Given the importance of having these two available to play right after the bye (Bears, Eagles, Vikings, Patriots, Falcons), let's look long term.

Good call

Despite sucking, TT has done well in putting together a solid secondary with (2) undrafteds at CB, a 3rd on Burnett, 2nd rounder in Hayward, a 4th rounder in House, 5th rounder Hyde and a 1st on HHCD. The development part has gone exceedingly well also, including taking the "malcontent" Woodson and turning him into the DPOY at 33 years of age and having Hayward a candidate for DROY.

When things aren't going well, many fans are quick to forget the great work this front office and these coaches have achieved in the secondary.
