Sheesh just trying to steer us on-topic here!

Besides, I watch women's tennis kinda like how you watch football. I'm cheering for my waifus.

And sure my homies thought I was crazy, they couldn't shut up about Anna Kournikova, but I had thingis for Martina Hingis.

I got your back Goldie.  We watch a lot of tennis given both daughters play.

I have good sense that both of them have better lateral quickness and instincts and hand eye coordination than Ty Summers.  As for tackling, well, who cares?  He doesn’t really do that anyway.

Yeah don't get what's so awesome about heckling a tennis player into breaking down like this.  I think it's pretty pathetic that people in this world get off on heckling.  Sad that someone's life is so awful that putting another human down makes them feel better about themselves.  Maybe instead of going to a tennis tournament, that fan should go to therapy to figure out why they're so unhappy.

Not to confuse heckling an individual tennis player with heckling an opposing team.  Bears fans don't heckle Rodgers because they hate him.  They hate the jersey.  If Rodgers were a Bear next season, they'd worship him.  That's not like heckling an individual sport.  You have to really hate that individual person to pay money and spend time to watch that player just spit hate.  Pathetic.

I support the right for women (and girls) to play tennis.

I do too. I have been a tennis fan since watching Chris Evert, Billie Jean King, and Margaret  Court a long time ago. It wont be long tho before some "girl" who was born with a penis crashes the sport and becomes a new champion by crushing the great ones like Venus and Serena Williams like they were amatuers. I am surprised it hasnt happened yet.

What the hell do you mean fawking awesome???  Sorry, I just don’t get what you’re saying.

It was mostly meant to be open to interpretation and also a gentle ribbing of your original post. Women's tennis is fawking awesome. Okay? Why? Was there a really good match you just watched? Do you have some highlights on YouTube you'd like us to watch? No?

Okay fine, so I posted the Naomi Osaka thing when I saw it, which IMO is doing you a solid since it's prompting some actual discussion.

So let's see, the team vs. individual argument seems like trying to walk a real tightrope. It seems easily contradicted by the fact that people heckle players on the team they support all the god damn time. Sure, Bears fan would probably cheer for Rodgers if he switched to the Bears. It's also very possible that the woman that heckled Osaka wouldn't have heckled her if she was representing USA instead of Japan. And it's not like Osaka was drafted by Japan. She, having grown up in America (at least as of any age where she even had the slightest concept of a nationality), continuing to live in America, and being culturally American decides to represent Japan. That's naturally going to make you a villain here.

As for the heckler, Naomi asked for her to be tossed out of the venue (not clear from what I've read if that actually happened or not), which I totally support. Like @Tschmack says, there's a certain etiquette to tennis. Of course, when my half-Mexican buddy asked me to introduce him to tennis, when I explained why some of the things he was doing weren't okay by tennis standards,  be it incessantly yelling over every small thing that happened in our 'match', or when he'd run into someone else's court to retrieve a ball while they were in the middle of a point, he decided to play the race card and declare that tennis was fundamentally racist because it was keeping people of color off the court with made up rules that go against their trash-talking competitive spirit.

But what I can't support is asking to address the crowd in the middle of a match to... I guess give the crowd an anti-bullying lecture?

And for that matter I can't support this movement where being mentally weak in athletics is somehow a virtue. Where Simone Biles is supposed to be a hero not for her excellent run in the previous Olympics, but for having the bravery to quit on her team while eating up a slot that someone who would have given her all had missed out on.

Naomi you're going to crumple with millions of dollars on the line because some lady in the cheap seats says you suck? I get 10x the abuse in an average online game.

We’ve become a nation of boorish behavior.  Class and dignity are out the damn window and it’s pathetic the person wasn’t kicked out immediately after heckling Osaka.   My in laws were at Indian Wells today watching matches and how they described the security it’s insane they didn’t give the person the boot right away.

As for the whole “mentally weak” argument yeah OK.  I won’t speak for other sports but tennis is generally a young persons sport.  Women’s tennis especially.  Many of these pros didn’t have a normal childhood growing up because it’s all tennis all the time.  And it’s been mostly a white person sport (still).

They are full of shit

I really think the way you deal with this is you hit people hard.  You act threatening or be the aggressive drunk a hole on a flight you are on the no fly list.

Sports are different but buying a ticket doesn’t give you the right to be an ignorant and insufferable jackass.

Probably Pikes

Older daughter plays HS tennis and is pretty decent but it’s not like she’s Serena or Venus.

Last year in state sectionals her opponent and their teammates and parents acted like absolute tools.  Heckling, yelling, basically acting like fucking morons.  It was a close match and my kid got rattled and ended up losing. Cost her a chance for state.   She was really upset about it.  One of her coaches made a point to confront the other team and parents because he’s part of a legacy family in WI tennis and his thing was it was complete bullshit amateur hour crap to act like that.  He won 2 HS doubles titles, his older sisters won several HS and college titles.  Basically he and his family are like the Manning family not in football but tennis.

Our younger daughter who is in 8th grade routinely plays HS players and flat out kills most of them.  Again, she’s not Serena, but she’s routing #1 singles HS players most of the time and is winning most of the time she plays.   Last week, she beat a #1 HS senior in a GB area team in straight sets and her opponent was getting pretty upset and animated on the court.

Seems like that is becoming more common w/players and their parents and fans.  So take that for what it’s worth.  I’ve seen plenty of ridiculous behavior in girls softball as well having coached her and commented on it before.

Osaka is an amazing player.  She’s earned the right to speak out about this.  I don’t agree she should get on the mic and call people out but the officials and security at Indian Wells should have thrown out the heckler.
