Me too... I admit I thought it was a bit of a stretch--and I am still somewhat perplexed at the thought of not addressing our O side of the ball...

I really dislike Shanny, but I do respect his GM prowess. Does lend credibility to TT's choice!

Packers force Broncos' war room to make move for Moss

Blame the Green Bay Packers for putting the Broncos in the position of motivated buyer.

Content with the way the draft had moved through the first 15 picks, the Broncos were sitting on the No. 21 choice, trying to compress any anxiety with patience.

Two of their three targeted defensive ends still were on the board. Arkansas' Jamaal Anderson was long gone at No. 8 to the Atlanta Falcons, but Tennessee's Justin Harrell and Florida's Jarvis Moss were available.

It was looking good for the Broncos to get their pass

Then the Packers threw some commotion into the Broncos' war room, by taking Harrell at No. 16. That left the Broncos with only Moss from their three-man wish list and four teams still were scheduled to pick ahead of them.

The Cincinnati Bengals, picking at No. 18, were zeroed in on Michigan cornerback Leon Hall, but Jacksonville, at No. 17, Tennessee at No. 19 and the New York Giants at No. 20 were looking to fortify their defense.

Would they have taken Moss?

"You never know," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said. "You can wait sometimes and guess. But we had a game plan where we had three guys there. We were hoping that two of the guys were going to be there."

The Broncos decided they couldn't take a chance. To move up from 21 to 17, the Broncos needed to come up with 150 points on the draft-value chart. Their second of two third-round picks, No. 86 overall, was worth 160 points, so by rights, the Broncos had plenty right there.

The draft-value chart, though, is only a guideline. Jacksonville wanted a little more, and with Anderson and Harrell gone, the Broncos needed Moss. So the Broncos agreed to throw in their second of two sixth-round picks, No. 198, to get Moss.
Denver was going to take him as an end? That is interesting.

Thanks for posting this, as it proves once and for all that Denver did not call Green Bay offering a 16 to 21 swap. I have to admit I would have wondered if it would have been a possibility for quite awhile (years perhaps!).

I still think the Broncos blew it in this draft. Looking at the need list they really needed help on the defensive line, one more linebacker, a safety, a tackle and could have used another wide out. With only 4 picks they should have fixed the defensive line and did get their tackle, but weren't able to do anything else. They just had too many holes, especially on defense, to only walk away with 4 players out of this draft. It will be interesting to see if they pay for this down the road or not.
