Packers open up three-week window for Sherrod to practice

Green Bay - The Packers may lose one first-round pick for the rest of the season, but another is going to get a chance to make it back this year.

The Packers have decided to open up the three-week window for 2011 first-round pick Derek Sherrod to practice, according to the NFL transaction wire.

Sherrod will remain on the physically unable to perform list, but he now has a roster exemption for three more weeks during which he'll be eligible to practice in full. At the end of the three weeks, the Packers have to make a decision whether to put him on the 53-man roster, cut him or put him on injured reserve.

The Packers do not practice until Monday.

Today was the deadline for the Packers to make a decision whether to start practicing Sherrod, who has been out since December after suffering a broken tibia against Kansas City. The Packers may feel pressed to get Sherrod, who has played left and right tackle and left guard, ready to play after right tackle Bryan Bulaga suffered a hip injury against Arizona Sunday and could be lost for a long period of time.

The Packers also must make a decision on TE Andrew Quarless, who is PUP but whose three-week practice window ends Wednesday. Quarless began practicing the first day he was eligible.

He has been out since suffering torn ligaments in his knee against the New York Giants last December.

The Packers may put rookie 2012 first-round pick Nick Perry on injured reserve after he underwent surgery to repair damage in his wrist.

IR looked like a sure thing a few weeks ago. Perhaps he's made decent strides in the last couple weeks? Confused

One theory I heard yesterday is that they sent Bulaga to a specialist because the nature of the injury was nothing anyone on the staff had seen/saw before form a football standpoint, not that it was necessarily worse than it appeared. Of course, just a theory...

Or maybe they were getting the 2nd opinion first. Big Grin
I may be very wrong on this, but I have notice during games Lang helps Saturday with offensive Line calls, at times over ruling him. McCarthy also has said center is the most difficult position to play on the line and he does not like starting rookie centers. It seems to me that Saturday may not have much left. Is it possible the Packers are considering later this year or next year moving Land to center and let Newsome and Sherrod take over the two left line spots? If they are thinking along those lines I would think they will want to get as good a look at Sherrod as they can before next years free agency and draft seasons.

How about Evan D-S at Center? Seems he's gotten a little better each year. Why not leave Lang where he's at? Lang can still help EDS with the calls if necessary.
