Just saw the third and final ESPN straw poll of 100 media personalities for NBA MVP. Six of the 100 had Giannis 4th in the vote.

Seriously? 4th?

By player efficiency rating, Giannis is having the second greatest season in NBA history, just behind Jokic’s season:

Nikola Jokic 32.66

Giannis 32.44

i get Nikola being the odds on favorite for MVP, but Embid I don’t.

PPG-RPG-APG-SPG-BPG

Embid 29.9, 11.4, 4.3, 1.2, 1.4 PER 31.0. 10.9 WS.

Giannis 29.9, 11.6, 5.8, 1.0, 1.5, PER 32.4. 12.3 WS.

Philly is 46-29 4th in the East.

Milwaukee is 47-28 2nd in the East.

Where is Embid’s advantage? Where?

My command of statistics with the NBA doesn’t approach that of the NFL or NHL, and my command of MLB statistics and history dwarfs both of them. So, I absolutely allow for the possibility I’m missing something.

But I don’t know what possible rationale there could be for opining that Embid was in any way having a better season than Giannis. It seems pretty clear the opposite is true.

I would think Giannis’ going off on him and the Sixers the other night-in Philly, no less-would have caused some of his detractors to rethink their “vote”.

What is it? Is it that Giannis has won two recent MVPs, and dominated the Finals, winning that MVP, too? Is it some sort of Greek Freak fatigue? Giannis is humble, and eminently likable. I don’t get this backlash.

I think Dokic gets the nod because of his edge in assists. He’s having a fantastic year. But anybody with Giannis less than #2 needs to have their head checked.

Jayson Tatum, Ja Morant getting thirds, placing ahead of Giannis? 🤣🤣🤣

Part of the anti Giannis sentiment is due to the fact he’s from Greece.  He didn’t come up through the typical AAU circuit like a lot of these guys did.

I do think another factor is he’s not a self promoter and doesn’t go out of his way to be chummy with other players or the media.

I have no idea how anyone couldn’t vote for him based on sheer ability and results. The numbers are the numbers, but there is no question he’s the best overall defensive player of any of those other guys mentioned.   He scores and rebounds as well as any of them.

I think there is a case where Giannis might end up as the greatest help side defender in NBA history, and it's not like he's a poor on-ball defender (he's elite at that as well). I think the best historical comparison for him is that he's Bill Russell with the ability to handle the ball.

The problem isn't directly with the media. I listen to Dan Patrick driving into work every morning. He said that when he was doing talk shows for ESPN, they would be given a sheet every day from management on what topics were likely to generate the most interest. They had a marketing research team that looked into what people were responded to the most (clicks on the website, polls, etc.). The reason they talk about LeBron, the Cowboys, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, etc. is that's what most people want to hear about. Management will encourage them to talk about whatever makes them the most revenue. For whatever reason, people aren't that interested in Giannis.

It's interesting that the top 4 guys in the league this year are Giannis, Doncic, Embiid, and Jokic. None of them grew up in the US or came through the typical AAU circuit either. That makes it harder for the average fan to care.
