Gurriel Homers 5-4 AZ.
Hall strikes out Smith. 1 down.
Suarez singles to LF.
Moreno with an infield single. Suarez to 2nd.
Murphy has Koenig relieve Hall.
Koenig walks Perdomo to load them up. Carroll at bat. 1 out.
Carrollngrounds put. RBI. 6-4 AZ.
Koenig walks Marte, intentionally. Grichuk up. Walked in a run. 7-4 AZ. Walker finally strikes out.
DL Hall, Rea, and Koening are all going in the wrong direction to end the year.
Who can you trust in the playoffs? Peralta, Myers, Montas, and Civale as starters with Williams and Megill in relief?
Brewers lose 7-4.
It's not a good sign that they seemed to be satisfied once they clinched the division.

Forgot Payamps. He's been great lately. Ashby has been pretty good too. With the 7 you listed plus my 2 no other pitchers need to see action unless it is a blowout, either way.
Also they DFA Paredes, who had a 1.17ERA and recalled Herget because they wanted a "fresh arm" for last nights game. This really makes no sense. If they wanted to recall somebody it should have been Hudson.
A 6:10 start tonight, with ESPN showing no national TV coverage.
We need to get back on the winning track, but the snakes are pretty good with a .558 winning percentage vs .571 for Milwaukee.
Gamecast calls it pretty even on who will win, Crew at 50.8%.
Civale pitching for the Crew:
Player | W-L | ERA | WHIP | IP | H | K | BB | HR |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
4-0 | 4.00 | 1.19 | 63.0 | 57 | 49 | 18 | 11 | |
7-8 | 4.48 | 1.33 | 150.2 | 152 | 142 | 48 | 27 |

They really need someone with some power to pinch hit off the bench. It was supposed to be Hicklen, but he was banished to the minors (and rightfully so) after getting thrown out trying to tag and go to third with 2 outs in the ninth a couple of weeks ago.
Not that it matters anymore for this years division race, but the Cubs lost this afternoon 5-1. It's always nice to see the scrubs lose.
Tonight's line up: Chourio and Contreras with the day off
hitters | H-AB | HR | RBI | SB | AVG |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
137-532 | 7 | 54 | 46 | .258 | |
91-429 | 25 | 74 | 3 | .212 | |
46-180 | 8 | 20 | 8 | .256 | |
144-580 | 32 | 109 | 18 | .248 | |
56-288 | 11 | 41 | 12 | .194 | |
88-360 | 6 | 41 | 22 | .244 | |
J. Ortiz3B | 98-414 | 11 | 52 | 9 | .237 |
117-457 | 2 | 29 | 17 | .256 | |
17-56 | 5 | 13 | 0 | .304 |
Sure don't like Hoskins and Bauers both in the line up again. With the best hitters on the bench, Contreras and Chourio, I just don't understand what Murphy is doing. Is he throwing in the towel on trying to get the 2nd seed?
Weird taking our 2 best hitters out of this game.
2-0 AZ on a HR by Pederson.
What is this starting from behind crap? Crew sure not playing like they have something to play for. Itβd be a long shot to get the 2nd seed, but not mathematically out of it yet.
More concerningly- Brewers are road warriors, but lately not so good at home.

I know right. Seems they have a recent trend of allowing a HR to the opposing team in the first inning.
And, they are now losing 2-0 after 3
Now 3-0, Hoby now pitching. Going into the bottom of the 5th, Crew needs to get something going here.
4 total at bats by Hoskins and Bauers, 3 Ks.
Can't take anymore of this Crew ineptitude, logging off.
Just have to come back and win this. Phillies lose, Braves win, Mets win. Come on Murph, get the best hitters in the game!!!!!!

The Brewers regular season ended when they clinched the division. You could tell from the celebration in the clubhouse that night that they'd achieved their goal for the year. They made the playoffs again, and they have a very small chance of advancing in the playoffs, again.
Another successful nibble at the apple, and they'll be more likely to get another nibble next year with Ortiz and DL Hall than if they'd have kept Corbin Burnes for this year and let him leave for nothing. But if they had Burnes instead right now, they'd be a serious World Series contender this year.
Don't think so, pitching ain't the problem. It's have a 1st baseman and/or DH hitting .210 or below and striking time after time after time. Five more Ks for them tonight. I don't care how "big hits" they have had, sometimes you just have to get on base or get a single to drive in a run. I hope both are gone next year. Keeping Santana may have been the best option for this team this year.
Whoever (Whomever? - II Spofford got into my head) the Brewers face I have to believe Murphy will have his team ready. Each of the wild card teams AZ, Mets, Braves have all been surging lately, but I still think the Crew can turn it on when they need to.
Just pathetic.

I agree on the lack of bench power. That would have been something to target at the trade deadline but they didn't make any moves. A Josh Bell type move would have been great (like the Dbacks made for a player to be named later).
But they really don't have a number #1 (or maybe even a #2) starter. They have a lot of good B+ (#3 starter) type pitchers, but they don't have a guy other teams fear as their #1. Burnes would have been that guy.
Having a #1 starter is like having a#1 WR in football. It's just not necessary. Like the Packers WR group having several guys that get the job done is better than millions in just one guy. Both Hoskins and Bauers have bench power, what they need most is a bench drive in runs with base hits or even sac flies player. Just too many unproductive outs from those two.
Fearing a pitcher doesn't win games either.
With a 1:10 CT start the game will obviously conflict with the Packer game. No national TV coverage per ESPN
Please do not get swept.
With Frankie starting Gamecast calls it 59.6% in favor of the Crew:
Player | W-L | ERA | WHIP | IP | H | K | BB | HR |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
8-7 | 6.23 | 1.64 | 112.2 | 143 | 77 | 42 | 14 | |
7-11 | 4.50 | 1.34 | 144.0 | 132 | 138 | 61 | 20 |
And here is your lineup, Chourio and Contreras back in today:
hitters | H-AB | HR | RBI | SB | AVG |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
136-501 | 21 | 77 | 21 | .271 | |
88-363 | 6 | 41 | 22 | .242 | |
164-577 | 23 | 92 | 7 | .284 | |
91-432 | 25 | 74 | 3 | .211 | |
144-583 | 32 | 109 | 18 | .247 | |
50-227 | 10 | 36 | 0 | .220 | |
118-459 | 2 | 29 | 17 | .257 | |
J. Ortiz3B | 99-417 | 11 | 52 | 9 | .237 |
137-535 | 7 | 54 | 46 | .256 |
Come playoff time, the quality of hitters generally ramp up because you are playing the best teams. The same goes for pitching.
You can probably get by with good but not great pitching if you have a hitting lineup that will spot you several runs a game. That was the Brewers 2011 team. Thatβs not this team.
Doesnβt mean Milwaukee canβt go on a postseason run. I just donβt think itβs very likely. Itβs even less likely without the 1 or 2 seed bye.
Another first inning home run given up. π‘
Brewers down again and they are 3 for their last 35 from the plate.
Brewers now down 8-0 as Montas gets absolutely shelled.
Being satisfied with just making the playoffs has set this complete let down.
Might want to avoid Arizona. JFC.
Month of September has not been kind to the Brewers.
I wouldnβt be at all surprised to see the Brewers fall from the three seed all the way to the sixth in the last ten days. After Pittsburgh, we close the season with three against the Mets.
Just a pitiful run by the Brewers, but Iβve come to expect no less.
