I don’t think Chryst should be fired now- but the state of this program will need a very deep dive after the season is over. Whatever Mertz was supposed to be, he isn’t, at least not yet. Whatever the OL was supposed to be, it also isn’t- at least not yet. And the secondary would have prevented this team from going very far even if the offense wasn’t a ball of shit. And until they have legitimate talent at WR, they’re not going to make the QB better.

Time to start kicking the tires on a new offensive mindset to go with a defensive head coach.

I wasn’t aware of this but the Badgers now have lost 8 in a row to ranked teams.

In their last 15 or so games they are basically a .500 team.

That’s completely unacceptable for a program that’s been a legit top 15-20 program the last 25 years.

In the last 2 games of 2019, they lost to Ohio State in a game they were ahead at halftime and to a good Oregon team by 1. Let's not lump those two games or 2019 into the struggles of the program. They were 10-4 that year with 3 losses to 2 of the top 5 teams in the country (OSU and Oregon) and one inexplicable loss to Illinois (J. Taylor had multiple fumbles).

So, the program started descending last year. Obviously, it's not all Mertz' fault, but a lot of it is. He opened his career by throwing 7 TDs and 0 interceptions in his first two starts. Since then, he's thrown 4 TDs against 11 interceptions. In those 9 games they are 3-6. The wins are in OT against Minnesota, against Wake Forest, and against Eastern Michigan. Most of us on the board could hand the ball off well enough playing QB and do enough to beat Eastern Michigan and Wake Forest.

With competent quarterbacking in 9 of those games (in other words Jack Coan or an equivalent), they beat Notre Dame and Penn State this year. They probably also beat Indiana and Northwestern last year. Instead of 3-6, they are 7-2.

Mertz getting dinged up and being forced to sit might be the best thing for him.  The problem is that Wolf isn't close to being ready, and there are no QBs in the wings (since they didn't recruit anybody hard the last couple of years because they thought Mertz was going to be the best QB they had since Wilson and that he'd play for 3-4 years).

They couldn't run the ball either, but despite having an NFL TE and some pretty good WRs, teams are daring Mertz to beat them and he can't. He can barely execute handoffs at this point and his confidence is completely shot.

You got that right.  If you want to be a legit team you have to win games in a big spot.  Over and over and over again they pee down their legs in big games.

I think it was on the Big Ten Network they mentioned how they are not only struggling with ranked teams but they have also lost 10 out of their last 19 games.  I get it that last year should probably be thrown out but there is no excuse for the steaming pile UW is putting on the field.

The University of Wisconsin is spending big  money to renovate the south end zone and add more premium seating and suites.  The Badgers have established themselves as a top tier program and are charging prices to support it.   So they can’t afford to muddle through the BT as a middle of the road program.

I don’t know if Chryst is a good head coach or not.  Same thing for Joe Rudolph as OC.   Obviously both of them were very good in lesser roles previously at Wisconsin, but it’s not like either guy tore it up at Pittsburgh.  Worse yet, if you look over the course of the last year and a half they sure aren’t trending in the right direction.  I also think Taylor covered up a lot of warts in 2019 so that team was probably a lot better than advertised.

It will be interesting to see what happens the rest of this season.  At this point, I’m not sure they should be favored in any game the rest of the way.

If the coaches are smart, they start working both Allens (Braelon and Markus) more into regular playing time.

You look at the stable of RBs, if this is the best they have I’d rather see the playing time being given to the guy that needs the reps to get up to speed. Sorry Chez- you’re a 3rd down back. Sorry Berger- you’re not up to the standard. Sorry Guerrendo- you’re probably more a slot WR than a RB, we’re moving you over there.

And the WRs are pretty much done. Dike, sure… keep him out there. But Markus Allen looked pretty solid in camp, and it’s time to get some game experience.
