Some of the Red Zone stuff is frustrating as hell- but its also somewhat understrandable.

GB OL isn't built to maul on short- yardage runs, they are built for Pass Pro

That comes home to roost inside the 5 yard line.

And none of the TEs are good blockers yet either, so that hurts in tight quarters

In 2014, GB was number 4 in red zone chances

also number 4 in red zone scores

but only number 11 in RZ percentage for TDs

Gotta punch it in there...

Finley in 2009 ? 4 Red Zone TDs on the season

Rodgers + Quarless in 2014 ? 4 Red Zone TDs on the season

Who knows, p'boi?
My initial thought that it was mostly by 'default', but one has to wonder if the coaches want to see if his he has his mind right, or if none of the other TEs are significantly better in practices.

Even though Quarless is the starter, it seems he and RRod rotate in/out often. Without looking, I'd guess they may have roughly the same number of snaps per game, unless one of them happens to have a hot hand going.

I'm just not convinced that a stud TE in the RZ will solve our scoring woes. Our offense is good enough that it shouldn't be dependent on that, but, of course, it sure wouldn't hurt to have that kind of threat.

I think the reason Q was starting is that Rich Rod hasn't taken the starting TE job from him. Rodgers has had some flashes of being good so far, but he's not really put it together consistently. He can catch, but there's more to being a receiver than just catching, especially in this O. The TE has to be able to find that soft spot in the zone coverage and get open and he has to learn to shed coverage. The TE position gets a lot thrown at them right away, so it's no surprise he hasn't seized the job fully..it took Finley a couple years before he was useful. Q will be the starter until Rodgers starts showing he deserves to start.

I like to think Coach Mike Solari is going to help make a difference there in short yardage run blocking for our OL and TEs. We should be able to maul, and part of mauling up front is deciding to do it, sticking with it, and wearing out the opposing front 7. IMO, we just need to call the run more often.

As for the TEs, I do think Kennard Backman will prove his worth before preseason is up. He is a pretty sound blocker, and the guy had exceptional hands throughout the OTAs. His troubles in TC practices seem to be more related to technique changes they are implementing with him. I think he will bounce back nicely, and will provide that speed at the position we've been craving since Finley went down. And, Backman has great hands. This guy can catch, and take off upfield. It will be great to see more of him as preseason goes on.

They seem to be standing by Quarless, giving him full support. Richard Rodgers is very good. Add Perillo in there, along with Mitchell, and we have a pretty good group competing for roster spots. I'm not worried about this group in the least.

That's pretty cold, Goaline.  Remember MM lost his brother over the summer.   MM is a decent person, and I think allowing Q to play was a great thing to do to help someone who is going through something no one should ever have to go through.

Having said that, I hope RR and Perrillo are our top 2.   One of those 2 needs to show he can be stout in the blocking game.   I'm still waiting to hear more about some of our other young TE prospects to know who should be #3.   But we need at least one of these TE's to be an excellent blocker, especially if we keep FB Rip and cut Kuhn.   A TE could line up at FB to help protect Rodgers, which is imperative.

I think everyone wishes they had Gronk, but it would have been interesting to see if a solid veteran like Owen Daniels might have been the perfect complement to the what the Pack already has.

For whatever reason, it just didn't happen when the Pack brought him in for a workout last summer.  At worst, he would have been a massive upgrade over ::gulp:: Brandon Bostick...  Maybe they just couldn't fit Owen D. under the cap... we'll never know.

In his prime, Rich Rodgers will be Bubba Franks. I will happily take that, as long as we get some speed alongside him.

It wasn't money. Daniels wound up signing a one-year deal for just above the vet's minimum.
