This is a bit of a shocker.  You could make an argument that Stearns has been the best in team history at acquiring and assembling talent.  I realize Matt Arnold had been taking on additional responsibilities but this seems like a knee jerk reaction to the Hader trade.

I have a very difficult time believing that Stearns wasn’t given direction from Mark Attanasio to keep salaries in line which basically facilitated and forced their hand to deal Hader.

But hey, much like Bud Selig when he was owner no way is he going to accept responsibility for being a cheap skate and not giving the FO much to work with.  I’m not sure anyone could have done it as well as Stearns and this could end up blowing up in their faces.  I hope not, but long term this could hurt them.

By the way, I have no idea what he would be advising Mark A about.  To spend more money?

Within a year I expect Stearns will be running a front office with another club.  He’s too good to sit still for a period of time.

Funny how it's worded "remaining in an advisory role."

Maybe it's more like they know Stearns is gone to the Mets as soon as his contract runs out in 2024. Because of that, they don't want him making decisions when they know he's checked out and likely more worried about building the Mets roster longterm, but they aren't going to let him go to the Mets a year early without compensation.
