Strasburg is set to announce his retirement on Sept. 9. Why did I start this? Because of the last contract he signed. That was in Dec 2019 for 7 years and $245 Million. Since signing that contract he has thrown a total of 528 pitches in the majors. That comes out to $464,000 per pitch! And just remember, the Nats shut him down early for a couple of seasons not to stress him so much early in his career. Fat lot of good that did.

Too bad for us fansβ¦he really looked good when he came up.
Sucks that such a talent was derailed by so many injuries I feel bad for the guy.
What is crazy is that I believe the rest of his money on the contract is guaranteed. So he gets the rest of it to play golf or sit on his couch. Good work if you can get it.
I think all MLB contracts are guaranteed. Yeah too bad from a fan standpoint - he was amazing in stretches. Don't feel bad for him though - he'll be fine with $245 million.

His career earnings are actually going to end up being 351 million.

Boras was very aggressive in protecting him for many years. There was a lot of criticism when he was shut down (while healthy) in 2012 with the Nationals in the post-season. It was Strasburg before the team then. It's likely he never sees anywhere near this money if he pitches more innings then.
Contrast that with Ben Sheets.
