From Tom Carpenter:

Steven Jackson hasn't made a lot of noise for fantasy teams, but he has continued to be a workhorse in 2012. He just topped the 10,000-yard mark for his career and has 1,189 combined yards this season. Whether Jackson returns to the St. Louis Rams next season likely will be a hot topic during the offseason, because he holds a $7 million contract option.

Considering that he will turn 30 in July, odds are that he will pass on that option and look to sign a longer-term deal as his career winds down. Surely he will draw a lot of interest on the free-agent market, but you may be hard-pressed to find a more logical fit than the Green Bay Packers, who desperately need a legit workhorse back and would give Jackson an annual shot at playing in the Super Bowl.

Could that move come to fruition? ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter thinks finances could keep it from happening:

"Green Bay makes as much sense as any potential destination ... Of course the question will be: What team is willing to pay an aging running back, albeit a highly productive and aging one? The Packers have always been interested in Jackson and now that his contract is up, it would make some sense for Green Bay to take a look. But the Packers won't have a lot of money to spend. They need to redo deals for Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews and others. So if there's a team out there willing to pay Jackson the top dollar he will be seeking, it's hard to imagine it will be in Green Bay. But if his demands are reasonable, and the market for his services isn't robust, Green Bay could come into play."

"Our strategy as an organization will always be to draft and develop."

What's dumb about that? I think if the money was there and the price was right they would sign Jackson to compete. I don't think they're set on a backfield, they have a lot of young talent, but just like this offseason and season I think they would look to a veteran to solidify the position. They won't pay much for Jackson, maybe a slightly better deal than what Benson got, but it's not unrealistic to think they will try to bring him in.
arent all running back aging? If not we may need to look into the non-aging ones

I think Benson gets another strong look next year. Maybe Grant as well. Im still not high on Green. There are some good backs coming out of the draft also. Bernard, Lattimore, Ellington, Barner, Ball, Bell

As mentioned, we have so many other places to spend our cap $.

Finley, Jennings, Woodson, Driver, Crosby may not be back so that could change things.

Pickett and Hawk are solid but are they worth the escalating contract numbers?

a lot of tough decisions for TT this offseason. Steven Jackson wont be one of them
I just don't see TT going for Stephen Jackson unless the value is there. We can argue forever as to whether Jackson would be worth it, but this goes against everything we've seen of TT since he started running the Packers 7 years ago: he only dabbles in free agency if value is there (Woodson, Pickett and Benson come to mind).

Better get on board with Benson, Grant, Starks, Green and Harris, b/c some combination of them will likely be the Packers RB's in 2013.

You're right, Brandon Saine and DaJuan Harris are much better RBs than a guy who had rushed for close to 4,000 yards in his last 4 seasons. Brandon Saine's and DaJuan Harris' are a dime a dozen. In the cold of Lambeau come playoff time, I'll take a proven power RB, even an aging one, over unproven role players any day of the week.
