Super Bowl Run?

I woke up this morning with the realization that this team might not be capable of a playoff win much less a Super Bowl appearance.

For weeks now they haven't looked very good on offense and there are still too many times where the defense goes long stretches without sacks or turnovers. 

Making matters worse with the exception of the Rams game and Vikings games where is the passion and emotion and intensity from these guys? It's like they are going through the morons out there.

I don't know what is going on with MM but they had better figure it out fast or their 6-0 start will just become another asterisk in what should have been a promising season.

Playoffs?  WTF are you on?  8-8.

If this team makes the playoffs on sheer dumb luck they will be immediately eliminated.

Playoffs?!?!  Schit and I thought I was one of the negative nellies on this board.  Eff me

This team has the talent to make a run, but the way they are playing right now, they'll be lucky to make the playoffs.  If you think about, we had an opportunity in the end to win or tie the game in three out of the four losses.   Those games were there for the taking.  Poor execution and playcalling cost us.  

 

The Packers need to follow that script that we've seen play out over time: a relatively mediocre team struggles through the regular season, but gets hot at the end and rides the momentum into (and through) the postseason.  I wouldn't bet on it happening, but with a talent like #12 under center, I believe it is possible.  

So which is it.....we have the talent or we are a relatively mediocre team?

Mike Daniels, the magician, disappeared. Again.

 

We can't make any kind of run without inspired play from the entire team, and quality coaching, like we had last week v. MIN, every freaking week... Every game. Without it, forget it.

We have talent but we're playing mediocre ball.  With the exception of the loss of Jordy - obviously a significant loss - this is the team that was 4 minutes away from a Super Bowl trip last year.  

 

I'm not overly optimistic, but a look at the 2011 Giants' run gives me hope that there is still a chance.  That team was 7-7 at one point and had a stretch in November & December where they lost 5 of 6.  

 

A run is tough to envision at this point and I wouldn't bet on it, but I'm not throwing in the towel yet.  

       
       


If there are no changes, Clements no longer calling plays... and they some how make the playoffs, 1 and done is the least to worry about. A playoff birth would only cement the idea that the changes last spring were correct.

Actually we have mediocre talent playing lousy and we have great talent playing mediocre.  Put that together with the current coaching and play calling you get what we have been seeing.

They may have the talent, but not the talent this year. The offense is lost, looks terrible, and I don't see why they're gonna get better suddenly.  Teams have adapted to what plays the Packers are able to run successfully.  And basically, the Packers have no vertical passing game without Nelson.

 

Something is wrong with Rodgers,  He's missing way too many passes.  Sure, there have been a lot of drops, but he's off on so many throws.

 

The O-line is not nearly as good as advertised, and while they're a bit banged up, I don't think health is gonna make them tremendously better.

 

The running game has been too sporadic, and when it's on, Clements/Rodgers seem to go away from it anyway.

 

Cobb apparently needs Nelson on the opposite side of the field.  Thought the Packers got a discount.  Looks like Cobb got overpaid.

 

With the exception of Ty, all the WRs have warts: old and slow, dropsies, injury, or dumb.  And TE has been a void for how many years???  The only bigger void on the team is MLB.

 

Super Bowl run?  I don't think so.  Most likely the humiliation of a home playoff loss AGAIN or another thumping on the road.  Maybe next year.

 

I can't believe people are crying about the D.  If you told me they would be giving up these point totals before the season started, I'd say we had a chance to go undefeated.

I would put this another way. Teams have adapted to what has become a stale, static offense both formation-wise and routes.

 

Three WRs-1 TE nearly 70 percent of the time. Usually widely split apart from each other so as to allow 12 to easily see and rapidly move through progressions. Stick in that alignment because Mike and Aaron want to play fast (tempo tempo tempo). 

 

This worked in the past because Jordy could exceptionally run every route in the playbook at all three levels, taking pressure off the other WRs and Aaron. Going with this in no-huddle, fast, supposedly gave the Packers advantages because teams couldn't readily substitute to adjust for down and distance considerations.

 

Now this has been turned on its head. Since no GB receiver can consistently win a 1v1 matchup, and Mike and Clements are generally refusing to modify the formation and route concepts, it actually gives the defense the initiative because odds are they'll know what the Packers are going to do before the ball is snapped and adjust accordingly.

 

Such a far cry from the McCarthy of 2007-2011 who'd throw out 5 WRs, or full house backfields, or 3 TEs, and run the full WCO route tree leavened with back shoulder fades. (BTW when is the last time a back shoulder throw was actually made and completed?)

 

This is what's driving me crazy. McCarthy has actually been pretty innovative in the past but we're not seeing that any more. I suspect it has a lot to with how Aaron wants to run the offense -- fast, with 12 having built-in run/pass options on most plays.

 

And now Aaron's bud is running the offense.

 

It's like imagining a young Steve Mariucci instead of Mike Holmgren designing and play calling for Favre in the mid-1990s. Instead of a critical eye and headbutting creativeness it became "what does the QB want". 

 

Everybody's gotten too comfortable.

Agreed.  Something "ain't right".

 

However, now that getting to the Super Bowl is probably a mirage at this point.  Obviously their play has to improve and get consistent - but I think it will.  We are too talented I think to tank December.

 

So, I believe they will win the division.  Then, start the playoffs with a home game and...and then, who knows?

 

It's unlikely they make the playoffs without better WR and TE play. Montgomery and Quarless will likely be an improvement over RichRod and Adams. That's their hope at this point. 

 

The defense is good enough that they probably won't be blown out in any game. 

I wish I believed that, but I don't.  I could see a team like the Giants putting up 30+ points on the Pack, and I don't think the Pack has enough firepower to match that.

There are some internal troubles on this team despite what MM may lead to think that it is just matter of better execution.

 

While Rodgers has been making some poor throws, I can understand why because his WRs have demonstrated more failure to make clutch plays but rather drop the ball or run sloppy routes.

 

The last play vs the Bears:  Janis is wide left...he runs straight into an the EZ and stands there like a statue with his arms open and the DB directly behind him.  He never moved once to get open.

 

Perillo runs straight into the EZ and was open...but never turned back to look at Rodgers.  The LB was standing several yds deep in the EZ.  Had Perrillo glanced back to Rodgers, a quick throw might have been completed and Perrillo may have been able to muscle in for the TD.

 

Adams runs a sloppy route in the EZ and failing to take the DB further to the back line and then doesn't break quick enough back towards Rodgers who throws high and Adams then lets the ball slide through his hands incomplete.

 

Cobb was simply not doing much to get open at all.   He has been almost as big of a disappointment as Adams.

 

Jones blew his chance to be the hero on the 3rd down drop.

I remember when Adams getting back was going to save the offense.. Now it's Montgomery, a poor man's Cobb, who is going to save it? 

 

I don't think so.  What saves the offense is better play calling and Rodgers finding his cape.

We may not see Monty for several more weeks.  That's the small picture problem.  The big picture problem is Jordy is due to start slowing down the next year or 2.  It is inexplicable how the strongest and deepest position on the team as become one of the worst.  Nobody saw this coming and nobody seems able to fix it.

I was just saying that when Monty  & Quarles do come back - and everyone is in the pattern - I think our offense will be much better.

 

Monty by himself will not help the offense, but a package with Monty, Cobb, Adams, Quarles & Perrillo/Rodgers should help AR find someone open.

Very strange how our receivers can go from looking great to awful. Take Jarrett Boykin...couldn't get on the field in 2012, 49 catches for a 14 yard average in 2013, & then can't get on the field again in 2014. Adams is particularly troubling. Let's hope he is hurt?

I just played out all the scenarios on ESPN playoff machine (it is back).  We need to win any 2 of the next 5 games to get into the playoffs.  If we only win 2 it is likely we'll be the 6 seed and play the Vikings in back to back weeks.

If we go 3-2 including beating the Vikes we win the division.  Same scenario very Likely we play the Vikings in back to back weeks.

If we get hot (big If) and run the table there is a good chance we get the #2 seed. This requires AZ to lose 1 additional game. 

I'm optimistic we make the playoffs, unfortunately I'm realistic enough to realize it probably is as a 6 seed.

Go Pack!   Let's finish 12-4 and go on the super bowl run we expected to start the year.

If we only win two games from here on out we don't deserve a playoff berth, plain and simple

We are sorely missing the "develop" part of "draft & develop," which points directly at coaching failure.

Or just maybe the draft picks aren't as solid as we all think...or both

It seems like a flawed system. All of your 1st and 2nd year players have to play at a very high threshold for this to be successful. 2nd year players don't automatically improve. Some 3rd year players don't. That is an awful long time when you have an immediate need at a position.

 

We've experienced this on our DL, at LB and CB/S, along with the O side at LT, C, RT, WR, TE. A lot of good fortune for us at RB and QB, but that is pretty much it.

 

Then we are breaking the bank to re-sign our own players. Is their value to us over-inflated because they are ours? Year in, year out, we re-sign our own almost exclusively, the same guys that couldn't close the deal the season before.

 

I am just questioning how good we have really been, and how successful we have really been. I know we win an inordinate number of games throughout the tenure, but, what about the meaningful ones? The games that determine playoff seeding, the ones that allow you to advance?

 

The last big game we won was SEA in our house, after years of futility and miscues. That made me think that maybe we were on our way...

 

Not so much.

The game against Minnesota was a pretty big one.

Not trying to be an asshole, Trophies, but you made some pretty definitive statements in that post. There is room for disagreement there, or maybe I just don't understand.
