Thanks Mr Clifton for a decade + of awesome play, and especially for your role in bringing the Lombardi back to Titletown in 2010

His effort in the playoffs and SB was a big factor in GB's success, including shutting down the Pitt OLBs

Thanks a million Chad and take a bow - you were one of the best for a very long time
Sounds like they were going to let him compete in training camp if he passed his physical. He deserved as much for what he's meant to the Packers.

The thing that always killed me about Clifton was that he never demanded to be paid like the top LT in the NFL even though he was probably more reliable than the vast majority of them. He always agreed to reasonable deals that paid him what he deserved but didn't handicap the team.

Best memory of Clif was him absolutely stonewalling Dwight Freeney a couple years ago. Freeney had been on fire in previous weeks and Clifton whooped him until it seemed Freeney had given up.
According to Silverstein:

The $5.7 million the Packers would save from cutting LT Chad Clifton should more than cover the cost of their draft picks and it should give them more breathing room to negotiate extensions with players like WR Greg Jennings and OG T.J. Lang, both of whom have deals that expire after this season. Still to be addressed is WR Donald Driver's contract, which calls for him to earn $5 million. Driver has expressed a willingness to take a pay cut, but it's unclear what the team will do.

I remember Buc fans mocking Wolf when he picked him over the other guy. Chad was great-I was sitting in Raymond James when Sapp sucker punched in and to this day Sapp nor Buc fans feel he did anything wrong. One of Shermans best moments was getting in Sapps face after that game.

Thanks Chad-You are Tauscher should go in the Packer Hall of Fame together.

I don't know the politics of how this works, but I'm guessing that this was the earliest the team could conduct a physical before releasing him. Not sure if that affects contract savings in any way or if its seen as a courtesy to the player for any reason.
He had to be a heck of a tough guy to keep playing with all the injury related stuff he went through.

I remember about 6 years ago seeing him icing his knee during a pre-season game and thinking he didn't have much more time left as he already looked very beaten up. He ended up playing something like another 5 years after that. He must have truly loved the game and being a Packer to keep putting his body through the rigors of NFL play.

What am I missing? I mean, we always need help on the oline.

He really hasn't been able to stay healthy for a couple of years. Even when he was on the field last year you could see he was going downhill pretty quick. He's beat up. I think TT and MM were somewhat on the fence already if it wasn't for Sherrod being injured.

Thanks Cliffy, you'll be missed.
Nice series of tweets about Cliffy by Andrew Brandt, as is the norm:

@adbrandt: Will never forget signing Chad Clifton to extension a yr after the Sapp hit, when he was uncertain he'd play again. Emotional moment.

Chad Clifton was a fixture in GB. Longtime favorite of staff: trainers, weight room, equipment guys. Presence will be missed.

When Chad signed extension in '04 right before deadline, came in wearing suit w/wife and camera. Very emotional, will never forget.
