With yesterday’s news, the off-season is complete. Overall, Horst should be applauded. A year ago, the Bucks were one of the oldest teams in the NBA. They addressed that and added young but veteran experience.

Backcourt
The Management stated they wanted better shooting and playmaking in the backcourt. The additions of Holiday, Augustine, Forbes, and Craig should be better than Bledsoe, Matthews, Hill, and Brown, but how much is the key. The Bucks retain Divincenzo and Connaughton for the rotation, with the expectation that Divincenzo takes an additional step as a full time starter. Defensively the Bucks need to be better, especially come playoff time. Between Holiday, Divincenzo, Connaughton, and Craig, Budenholzer has a lot of varying skill sets.  Connaughton will be useful in small ball lineups wit’s his leaping and deep shooting ability and headsy play. If Divincenzo struggles offensively, they have playmakers in Augustine and Forbes to bring shooting and playmaking off the bench. It will be Budenholzer’s challenge to keep this group humming with only so many minutes to use.

Frontcourt
The days of thinking of Middleton as a G are generally over. He’s a forward now, with 6 Gs vying for playing time. In Middleton and Giannis, there’s 50 ppg, almost half their offense. Even though Middleton is coming off a career year, he needs one more level for this team to be a more formidable playoff foe. Consistency in his scoring with less turnovers is a must for Middleton to get to one more level. With all the increased and improved ball handling, he no longer needs to handle the ball at all- now he can focus on iso and spot up opportunities. Giannis’ improvement must be in his shooting and his consistency- and all of it is in his head. The rest is at an All-Time great level, and enough to be a champion. Portis has been added as a better athletic option than Robin Lopez backing up his brother. And this truly is DJW’s put up or shut up season. The Bucks were very reliant on Brook Lopez as a part of their scoring, but I see that diminishing this year. The Bucks have remade this roster with more reliance on Gs who drive and hit 3s, and with that will be less opportunities for Lopez. He needs to improve his efficiency to still produce for this team.

Overall: this team is going to be using an abbreviated camp to integrate a completely revamped bench and one new starter. They only get 72 games to figure it out. The Eastern Conference returns a Miami Heat team that took up permanent residence in the Bucks’ head a year ago, an improved Brooklyn Nets team with real star power, a Boston team with an emerging superstar, a Philly team that was supposed to challenge Milwaukee a year ago now with a better coach, and an Atlanta team with a young but talented roster. I suspect the early returns will be mixed. But this team has the talent and roster to win it all if they stay focused. No excuses, now- Giannis is committed, Holiday is likely to extend, and they have what they need on paper.

Belief has a lot to do with results when you’re going from contender to Champion. It may take some time, but this much younger and seemingly more talented team has a shot to raise a long awaited banner at the conclusion of this season. Anything less needs to be viewed as a disappointment.

Khris isn’t the most attractive guy. Hopefully the little girl looks like Momma...

Giannis’ significant other is a volley baller, so his little boy could be Just as tall and even more athletic. That Antetokounmpo gene pool is scary... long, tall, athletic. If Alex comes back from Europe with any of Giannis’ burn there may another sooner rather than later. Even Giannis said Alex could be better than him...

PG13 finishes with 33 on 13/18 shooting. Made the comment after the game that coming off two shoulder surgeries last year he didn’t get as much offseason work in. Makes sense- he really struggled last year shooting the ball.

I think the Clippers have something to say this season...

One of the most under the radar moves this offseason was the Clippers signing Ibaka to a 2 year, 19MM deal.  I know a lot of people questioned them from moving on from Montrezl Harrell but Ibaka is a sneaky good player and can shoot.  I also think he’s a more versatile defender.

Look at his line last night.   21 minutes, 15 points, 6 boards, 2 for 3 from long range.  That’s really good production.  If he’s able to do that over the course of the season the Clippers are a real threat in the West.

The Clippers are deep, too. Zubac was not making life easy for Davis. I think Ibaka is better than Harrell.

And you have to wonder, in the back of his mind- is AD really going to play with the requisite urgency? He was their best player a year ago-  but it’s always different as the hunted than the hunter.

Ibaka was an elite-level defender earlier in his career (3-time first-team All-NBA Defensive Team). Even if he's something like 80% of what he was, he is exponentially better than Harrell. Harrell's minutes were limited in the playoffs because he was a terrible defender.

For all of the credit Kawhi got for shutting down Giannis for the Raptors two seasons ago, the fact that the "wall" Kawhi was running him towards included Ibaka, Siakam, and M. Gasol probably had as much to do with the success of that strategy as Kawhi. I'm glad Ibaka didn't end up in Boston. He's not an offensive liability like Tristan Thompson.

The Bucks have started as the top 3 point shooting team in the NBA. Most makes, highest %. They average 18/night and make 44% of them, though tonight they only hit 14 threes at 41%.

The Bucks went into the season looking for better 3 point shooting. They added Holiday, Augustine, Forbes, and Portis to the rotation and have gotten better play from Divincenzo. With all the open looks Giannis generates, you can bet the league is on notice. Now the lanes are starting to open up again for Giannis (43 points tonight 17/24 shooting). You put up a wall, 4 guys are there to bury the open 3s.
